Went to get a tooth (upper right 6) removed this morning - it had been botched many years ago by a previous dentist and was 50% filling.

The dentist warned me that if the filling came away it would make it tricky to get enough grip to pull the remains out, so guess what...🙄

I got given a second dose of anaesthetic so we could take it to extra time, but despite a lot of chipping, tugging and twisting, the roots were still in there when the second dose wore off, so I'm being referred to an oral surgeon to have it finished off, hopefully in the next couple of weeks 🤞

Anyway, the paracetamol and ibuprofen are lined up to try and take the edge off the pain, but any idea when I can expect it to stop bleeding? Turns out the taste of my own isn't up to the standard I'm used to 🦇

A while.

I have vague memories of having four perfectly good molars removed as a kid due to "overcrowding." I bled like a stuck pig, I remember lying on the couch with a washing-up bowl next to me that I could gozz into.

Oh my that's not good.

Last August I was in such pain, in my ear, my head, all my right hand side of the jaw. Went to the dentist, who was leaving for his annual holiday in an hour's time but he said he couldn't see anything wrong. Then had my ear syringed (costing £50), this did nothing to alleviate the pain. Then a few weeks later I found I could get a finger nail into a gap in the tooth.
Turns out it was a wisdom tooth completely split in half, no wonder the pain was so intense. It took 3 injections and seconds to pull out.
On the piece of paper given at the surgery, there was a section about continuous bleeding - call the dentist back, if the bleeding didn't stop. You should have been given some gauze pads to gently hold onto the open wound.
Please call the dentist surgery and tell them what is happening.

Edit: DO NOT SPIT.

Yep I had that too and a gob full of cotton wool covered in congealed blood.

What Bunnyhop said.
I unexpectedly had a wisdom tooth extracted last week after getting severe pain. About a third was filling. it took the dentist over half an hour to get it out. It stopped bleeding after about an hour. It's supposed to clot quickly. You need to get it seen to asap.

£250 as no NHS dentists in my town anymore 🤨

I had 24hrs of bleeding after a tooth extraction a few weeks ago, surgery was closed over the weekend. Dr Google said use a teabag - it worked a treat. Bleeding stopped almost immediately.

Yeah, had something similar when a crown destroyed itself and I needed the root/stump extracting. The extraction seemed to be taking longer than normal and apparently there was this one bit of root that was being tricky to grab. I left with half my face packed with swabs.

My first big mistake was cycling to the dentist. My second was having taken the motorbike to town in the first place. I _just managed to make it back home before the pain relief wore off, but the journey back was just the constant sensation of pressure from the helmet and the taste of uncooked steak.

I am _not_ looking forward to having two wisdom teeth out next month; the x-ray has shown the partially erupted lower one has a root that looks like a fishing hook.

Sounds like i got lucky - longish story follows.

I had to have a tooth out after a crack stopped being fillable, and it got a minor infection in. I turned up actually to see what could be done, dentist said another filling had about a 50/50 chance or I could go for a ££££ cap or get it out. Given the pain of a minor infection - I said go for it.

Anaesthetic took some time to work and then he set to, and almost immediately there was a sharp crack and the tooth came out leaving roots. I didn't really know at this point that actually they don't just pull them out, and instead use 'lifters' as well, so thinking with nothing to pull on this was a disaster, had a bit of a panic.

That fear resolved, he set to with the lifters but with very minimal success, and i was beginning to worry. Then he asked if he could get his colleague to have a look. i was open to anything by now, so he went and got a tiny little lady dentist (I'm thinking if he can't get it out with all that straining and sweat, what chance....) but turns out she also teaches at the dental school at the hospital so had skillz beyond the average. She explained what to do, he said he'd not seen that technique, she said if i could hang on while she finished her patient off next door she'd sort it.

I'm not going anywhere at this point, I have light at the end of the tunnel.....

True to form she comes back in 15 mins later and sets to work. A microsecond later we both discover that the anaesthetic has started to wear off in the intervening period.

One jab later, she sets to work again and with virtually no effort, just a flick of the wrist and a twist like so and the offending stump is clattering into the dish. I can't remember if my dentist applauded or not.

I'm just glad Dr Lee was on duty next door otherwise i could have been in your shoes exactly.....

Good luck.

I went for an emergency appointment after a chipped tooth went bad over lockdown (Jan 2021).

After further fun and games with my actual dentist I ended up in your position with about half a tooth remaining sometime summer 2021 and was referred to "anywhere in Berkshire as we might not be able to get you a referral locally".

June 2022 I had a missed call from an unknown number in Newbury.

Jan 2023 I got a letter post dated a few weeks previous during the postal strikes saying that as they'd tried to contact me I had 10 days to get back to them or I was being removed from the waiting list for the waiting list (the previous phone call was just to confirm that my referral letter had made it to the top of their in-tray). Presumably this is a management fudge so that John Flipping Redwood can maintain hi stance that there is no problem with NHS waiting lists in his constituency, because technically we're not even on the waiting list.

I had a bit of a sense of humor failure with everyone involved and still haven't heard back.

Apologies MCTD but I read the title and thought, WTF has WCA done this time 🤔😂

For reference, I had 3 wisdom teeth extracted under general anaesthetic with no issues, and bled for 2 days. Mrs Fazzini was very understanding and supportive at my oral destruction of the bed linen.

Not as lucky as me- I had to have a lower wisdom tooth removed (it was fine but the corresponding upper was a no show so would have caused a problem if left). As the dentist was applying pressure, my jaw was moving around too much so he asked his assistant to brace my jaw- which she did by pressing her thigh against it!

Not really, because I think I had a similar experience. My legs just involuntarily crossed at the memory, and my nuts will drop down again around Thursday. Thanks for the reminder though.
