I’m in the process of getting quotes for white plastic facia/soffit cover boards and new guttering on my dormer bungalow. These will be installed ontop of the existing wooden facias/soffit boards.

The Plan of the bungalow is approx 15m x 8m with a front and back dormer of 10m long and 2.5m width, one on the front and one on the rear of the roof.

I’ve had one quote of £3.5k and am awaiting more. Does this sound reasonable?

Not to me but then again it's a job I'd do myself rather than get someone in for.

Without meaning to sound lazy but I can't be arsed to do the math. What's the rough linear meterage of gutter fascia and barge. I can get you a rough price on materials tomorrow tgen you can see what's in it for Labour and Mark up.

Fascias/soffits/gutters are the great earners for anyone who does them.

Have you seen how little the materials cost?

What are you having done - all of the old fascias/soffits taken off and replaced with plastic?

Or, is the old stuff staying in place and they are nailing over the old stuff?

Edit - reading the OP again, old stuff staying in place, then £3.5k is a joke. It is one days work for 2 blokes. £750 max for labour. Materials, I cant see it being much over £500.

Get quotes from some smaller builders/property maintainers, the Companoes who do this stuff full time really take the pee with their pricing. Be aware there are many 'travelling' tradesman doing this work. Some do a good job, others are complete cowboys.

Rough lengths are

1) Fascia / soffit - 57m (includes dormer)

2) Barge / soffit - 27m (there is an extension on the side of the bungalow)

3) guttering - 50m (with 4no downpipes)

There is no existing plastic coverboards, so nothing to take off except for existing guttering. I only want plastic coverboards over the existing wooden fascias/soffit, with new guttering as well.

btw this quote was from a local builder.

Putting new onto old is lazy & hiding any potential issues underneath. Get the old stuff ripped off, treat / reinforce / cut out any damaged timbers. If you plan to stay put for some time, consider eaves protectors.

I popped into my local trade upvc suppliers when they were quiet & they gave me lots of advice and a quote for delivered materials (they are long). I then hired trestles & boards from TP and did our bungalow myself. Saved thousands.

If I was paying 3.5k I'd at least want a proper job done (ie all of the above), waste disposed of & a neat tidy job.

You don't have any asbestos up there, do you?

Keep shopping around for quotes.

PS: ask for a break down of costs so you can gauge the fairness of the quotes. I wouldn't want to be doing a first floor job from ladders, so a tower or scaffolding may add to the cost.

He did say he would need scaffold for the dormer @ £1000.

£1000 for a scaffold for the dormer? Was he buying it?  We paid £350 for ours for as long as it was required.

There is a front and rear dormer, about 10m long that covers a bedroom, landing and another bedroom/bathroom. So in total a length of about 20m of scaffold - if that makes any difference.

I paid 5k for a 4 bed detached, double gable at one end and all wooden boards removed.  Had quotes ranging from 4.5k to 12.5k (I escorted him out the door pretty quickly).  I asked on here and consensus seemed to be that I was being bent over at 5k (materials are very cheap - Google it).  And, they were a nightmare - one bloke turned up, no scaffolding as promised and just threw stuff all over my gardens (including nails and other stuff), then spilt solvent all over my drive.  Fortunatley I had withheld some of the payment...

Funny thing being the company I used were recommended by neighbours!  Cowboy industry.

I'd get a scaffold quote separately from the facia job personally.

I live in a semi-detached and my neighbour did it with a guttering guy one weekend, all done for £800 for my half! That being said we also only have a straight run at the front and rear with no angles or difference in the run. I was away for the weekend so didn't even lift a finger!

You can buy cheap plastics and they taint , scaffold varies for what you want , best thing you can do is get a few prices , if you start asking for quotes to be broken down to much no one will bother pricing as there in business to make money like all of us . Personally I would look at a decent window fitting firm as they normally do plastics

2k for guttering, 4 downpipes

I didn't ask for soffit as they said the wood was fine and just needed a paint.
