Not sure if this has been asked before, but what is the deal with FB with regards to Internet Explorer?

On the laptop I generally use IE for most stuff with Firefox as a second option if I feel like it. A while ago I started getting a message across the top of the screen when using FB telling me to "update my browser". I initially clicked on the link thinking IE needed an add-on or something, but actually the plan was to get me to change my browser from IE completely. Now the message has changed to "we wont support this browser soon"

With upwards of a billion people using FB, I'd say this is a pretty big deal for IE (although I appreciate lots of users will be on phones & tablets rather than laptops)

what version of IE are you on? if you haven't updated in a while it might be a version with known issues that won't support modern code. It's an issue we have where our code works fine and gives a lovely user interface on up-to-date browsers, but we have corporate clients whoa re stuck on IE7...

IE had been superceded by Edge now

Oh wow, I just tried myself. We have the latest IE and I get the samemessage - I only use IE for work development. IE has been superseded by Edge so that does make sense, I suppose

I cannot fathom why anyone would use IE by choice. The nature of my job means I have to hop between Chrome / Firefox / IE for various arsey webapps and going to IE is a hateful experience. Chrome has well and truly won the desktop browser war, it accounts for like two thirds of all desktop web traffic.

But yeah, Microsoft's stance is that IE exists for legacy reasons and recommends folk use Edge instead (which will be Chrome in all but name soon anyway). It's not surprising that third parties are dropping IE support, I've seen it a few times now, it's not just Facebook.

we have corporate clients whoa re stuck on IE7…

Ye gods.

Hah we have an app that relies on IE7 as well (the vendor went out of business, we have no access to the source code to develop it and a complete ground up redevelopment would be over £1m).

As for IE11, I quite like it from an IT perspective, easy to control with GPOs at least. Edge is dogshit - until they complete the Chromium engine rebuild at least. Firefox and Chrome are OK but some stuff just doesn't work with them and controlling them in a corporate environment is a bit of a pig.
