I'm quite glad I'm not a user but I was shown a thing about a cyclist supposedly coughed in a woman's face in West Lothian. If he did then I agree totally disgusting but it's the 4000 replies of the kangaroo court . So many of the comments ott and so many tarnishing all cyclists yet only hearing one side of the story. How many folk get mowed down by cars every year
It's even worse than here.
PURITY SPIRAL
What's your point, caller?
Have you just discovered Facebook? Well guess what? The problem isn't Facebook - it's people!
Just continue ignoring it - it's the best way.
My brother was just saying to me tonight he went to the public football park with his 3 sons in West Kilbride and was on the local facebook page as there was outrage at 4 adults playing football. They are 15 to 20 and 6 foot tall, apparently it was about 25 comments before someone said I think I know who that is and it is a family all in the same house. Curtain twiching spleen venting barstewards
It's funny, cos since lockdown, EVERYONE'S a ****ing cyclist!
bloody cyclists, cycling all about on their bloomin bikes, eh, grrr
wot, no link for a'trolling ?
I binned facebook two years ago, and certainly don't miss the shoot, especially now.
Don’t worry it’s probably the comic shop guy ranting.

I haven’t binned it because there are a few clubs/groups I am involved with that use it as key way of sharing information with their members. I rarely see anything that annoys me on Facebook - why? Because you only see pages you’ve chosen to engage with or people you told Facebook your were friends with and it seems to rank the pages you engage with most near the top so if you unfriend idiots, unfollow groups full of argumentative trolling and like and comment on pages which you like you will mostly see stuff that makes you feel ok - whether that echo chamber is healthy may be another debate but it’s better than arguing with strangers who enjoy it!

If only that were true.
If it is the one I have seen, have a look again at the photos and tell me if you can actually see a bike.
It may have been selectively edited by the time I saw it appear on a mtb group I frequent but there was a conspicuous absence of any actual bike in the photos. Also, their account of the police saying they were basically not interested given the photo, and accusation of deliberately coughing in someone's face and trying to force entry to a car didn't strike me as all that plausible given the current situation.
In this particular case I had a strong suspicion it was a put-up job by the landowner who doesn't like the Scottish access laws and was taking the golden covid-19 opportunity to stir the pot.
I may be wrong, but so may all the faux outrage bullshit.
It got taken down off of the group pretty quickly when I pointed this stuff out.
All those folk that detest cyclists want to shoot or string him up , drive over him etc and many of them female. She drove in her car to confront him and take his pic then coughed only her side of the story. It is so easy to get lost on a bike and may have to jump a fence once or twice in your life. No wonder Caroline Flack and probably many others buckle under that kind of pressure. So many of these folk writing should be ashamed of themselves
If only that were true.
Kelvin. Certainly seems to be for me. Lets test it.
Here's a summary of my facebook page right now.
1. An old friend from before I had children.
2. An advert - for something I keep considering ordering
3. A post from a group I am a member of relating to outdoors
4. A post to my local town facebook group
5. A former colleague
6. A post to a group I am a member of for selling stuff I'm interested in
7. An advert for greener grass - I have no lawn
8. A post from my local council (i've liked their page)
9. A post in a group for pupils of my former school
10. A post in a group from someone looking for technical advice
11. A post from my best man's wife
12. An advert for some sort of home office workstation
13. Another post from the same former colleague
14. A post in a different group for selling stuff that I keep meaning to post in
15. A post in a group I subscribed to with a video I'll watch later
So in 15 posts none which will be in any way antagonistic. None that I didn't at some point ask to see - although a few that I should probably unsubscribe from. And 3 Adverts - one of which is directly relevant.
I'll stick to my theory that if you are constantly seeing controversy on your f/book page -- you are engaging with those posts or posters and therefore seeing more of it.
I mentioned this on another thread a week or so ago; I went out for my usual 1-a-day solo bike ride.
I happened to stop at lights with two other cyclists (yep – cyclists do stop for red lights). I recognised the riders and nodded hello as you do, keeping our 2-3m distance👍
As lights changed we set off and single filed up a little hill because a woman cyclist was pedaling squares up it very slowly; when it was safe we passed her single file one after the other .. to be shouted at for not social distancing. Nobody said anything in reply, I guess we used to spoutie types yelling some sort of abuse (although typically they are in cars).
Anyways … Top of the road I went my way and other cyclists went theirs.
After ride I get a txt from a mate with a clip that had been uploaded to FaceBook by the woman cyclist. Wrongfully assuming the 3 cyclist who overtook her were riding as a group, and stating we would be the reason the Government would stop everybody in country exercising outside ... obviously totally oblivious to the fact that her wrongfully uploading videos to FaceBook could potentially have that effect.
Facebook is swamped with idiots - who will upload anything to their newsfeed/status to get themselves attention.
Thing with social distancing, as cyclists are panting the virus in their wake, arguably you need to be a LOT further behind someone than 2m and pass them more widely too.
I saw that one. Looked like absolute horseshit tbh
Facebook will surely lose loads of members worldwide due to COVID, Im guessing like me who ditched it about 6 weeks ago with no thought of going back many others will. I can handle watching the evening news or going on the guardian app to see what the numbers are like everyday but then going on social media to read everyones an expert is a bit much to be honest.
Anyhoo focus on the positives , loads of people out on bikes . Strange that some people dont want to say hello as you pass . Also good to see how active some of the older generation are. Ive been cycling out of the way up in the hills and the very quiet back roads and seen some real Auld yins jogging and on tandems etc. Also a great time to sell second hand bikes as everyone wnats to be out in the fresh air and finally the weather since lockdown has been exceptional here in east lothian and If we can ease restrictions in a month or so to get to the tweed valley we will be sorted.
I deleted Facebook from my phone a week ago. Feel a lot better for it. Spending more time listening to music etc.
