My wife has a fairly ambivalent attitude to my biking, there are worse things I could be doing. She thinks it's a total waste of money, if she directly asks how much something costs she gets told the truth but otherwise what she doesn't know, doesn't hurt her. As long as the total number of bikes and their colours basically remain the same then she generally isn't bothered

I'm well aware of FB's snooping capabilities, a couple of times I've been looking at 'one offs' online on my work PC where access to social media is denied only to find an advert for the same thing on my iPad when I get home (how does it do that BTW?) but for me the benefits outweigh the downside

Anyway, this morning I was idly looking at bikes with a view to a possible future purchase. A little while later I crossed the room to speak to my wife who was on FB on her PC and what's the advert at the side of the screen? Only the blooming bike I'd been looking at earlier, from the same retailer and with the price in big bold numbers next to it! As above, she has no interest in bikes and I don't use her PC

WTF Facebook? How am I supposed to spare my wife the worry of caring for my financial responsibility if you're going to shove the evidence directly under her nose! 🙂

It's a new service face book offer, they try to align people who can trust each other without the need to bullshit about things they buy.

Yeah it's great isn't it...

I've got a fair idea of what my wife is thinking of surprising me with for my 40th next month because of it.

Adblocker.

Don't work well for in-feed ads, which still get through as FB makes them look like posts from friends etc.

Don't use it then.

You can block ads on FB, however, you need to keep an eye on it as it will add new stuff which you need to block.

Just go to settings/ads and block them.

STW used to have a banner up by "chat forum" that did this for Madame's shopping sites but it's gone.

I've binned Facebook; my life is (mostly*) the richer for it.

Not for the reasons you outline, I did it because of my 'procrastinationMAX' tendencies were preventing me from getting stuff done when I had access to it. STW has filled this void, but slightly less completely.

I also don't like the idea of being snooped, harvested, targeted, farmed or whatever. FB is getting quite sinister IMO.

Don't use it then

I'd rather not cut of my nose and it would make work a bit tricky as I manage the social media element.

I'd just rather they not do that bit.

I posted about this phenomena back before Xmas.My wife is pretty naive with the PC and ordered me stuff online without going incognito or clearing the cache. Subsequently, every time I went online I was getting ads for stuff which made it obvious what I was getting for Xmas 🙁

Use an add on called 'Ghostery', it blocks trackers which could be behind you receiving targeted ads. I don't really get ads on facebook because of using ghostery and ad blocker

incognito mode on chrome.

3. Incognito Mode: What Is It Good For?
The point of incognito mode is not to hide your identity from the rest of the world, it’s to hide your interactions with the internet from the PC you’re using (and the Google account you’re logged into).

When you use incognito mode, Chrome doesn’t record any history or cookies, and it disables browser extensions. This means that third party services like Facebook, Google, etc that use cookies to track your movement across the internet to serve you better ads won’t follow you to the incognito tab.
Due to these reasons, incognito mode is generally safer when making banking transactions or having conversations you don’t want to be recorded on your PC.

Just tell the wife the truth and get on with Your life.

You say she DGAS, clearly that's incorrect because you've made it clear in your statement saying she clearly does know what's going on.

Be honest with yourself first, if you look at bikes and want one, buy it.

Don't blame FB, it's you that's reading it.

FB Purity add-on should hide most ads in facebook
Plus go thru security and privacy settings and make sure various things are turned off (like the seamless tell all your friends what you like).

I only use it incognito, and bin all cookies* on browser exit. Side effect of that is you get way more new device login warnings.

Even that won't stop the spying. 3rd party sites presumably have fb (etc.) "share this" widgets, so fb still knows where you've been and what you've been looking at.

Even when I used a totally unique browser for fb, somehow it "knew" about what i'd done elsewhere.

One reason I rarely use it.

(* bin all except a few whitelisted cookies, eg, STW etc. that I use regularly)

Cookies in part, but also depends what accounts you're logged in under on each PC, both Facebook and things like Google. If you've used both machines to access your FB account it will have cookies on both and will work it out from there.

It's not all FB. It's advert companies. You get it with a lot of sites with adverts but it's not the site, it's the ad company serving the adverts, which the sites generally have no knowledge of what you're seeing. Little bits of code in the advert goes off and fetches the ads based on your cookies and a back end database knowing what sites have been associated with those cookies.

Anyway, end of the day, it's about money, and FB like others makes money through adverts.

And yes, if you use an adblocker, whitelist STW please, or pay for a 'P' 😉

I just don't use Fb anywhere near as much as I used to, mainly because I work much longer hours now, no more getting home at between 2.30 and 5.00pm, depending on which day of the week, 37.5 hour weeks are a distant memory, it's now an average of 55 hour weeks, so Fb gets much less attention than it did.
STW, on the other hand, gets as much attention, and I get far more ads here than I did on Fb, however, one of those ads got me the current job after losing my last one, and I'm very much happier as a result, so it's all good.
