They'll be the same ones slagging off David Beckham for having the bare-faced effrontery to make a huge donation to charity

Basically they're bitter, twisted and joyless bastards who resent anyone who has become successful through both their god-given talent and good old fashioned hard work. Just ignore them

Get over it mate, for your own good. That discussion's dead. Let's all start again anew.

Lewis will push an inferior car to it's absolute limit, in his desire to win. That's what marks him out as a true great. There are perhaps only two or three others who can do that in F1; Alonso, Vettel and Raikkonen (and maybe future stars like Perez and Maldonado). I wouldn't be surprised to see Lewis getting podiums and even winning races this year, if he can get to grips with the car. Alonso was narrowly beaten last year, with a significantly inferior car to the Red bulls and McLarens (and even the Renaults and Mercedes' at times). Lewis won races in spite of the rotten luck he had with mechanical failures.

Don't write off a great driver just yet; the season's not even started.

Not necessarily - I used to be a big LH fan (and am a Beckham fan), but found his attitude and demeanor over the past few seasons increasingly less attractive. He is still an awesome driver and deserves respect (I was having mild bit of joshing and waiting for the flames 😉 SoH failure or what? ). But as a person, rather than a driver, I would prefer to see Button do well. More charming, less whinging and a triathlete!

I wouldn't say I want him to fail, there are just more 'attractive' people in the sport to support.

I would prefer to see Button do well. More charming, less whinging and a triathlete!

What he said

But like Mark Webber, Jenson seems a bit too much of a 'nice guy' to really have that hunger and ruthlessness it takes to win, his World Championship notwithstanding, in comparison with Alonso, Lewis, Vettel, and formerly Schumacher, Senna, etc. Both the latter were loved and hated in equal measure, and neither were favourites with their contemporaries, but the were both ruthless winners. And it seems Lewis has a bit of that.

Only twice have I shouted/screamed or become emotional when drivers won a title.

Damon Hill
Lewis Hamilton

GO LEWIS! He's finds the limits, going over them to test the car properly. These sessions aren't parades you know. They are to find out balance/etc etc.

Crikey, get a grip. FWIW, yes met Button and was charming, chatty and much like his TV personna. No cant say the same for Lewis and am only relying on WYWIWYG. Totally false (potentially) but we do that with most people. Blimey, there really are some major SoH failures going on at the moment.

FWIW - I would like LH to do well, but would rather see Button win. I doubt that this will be the case as there are better drivers out there. But there are times when the best overall team, rather than individual drivers win and I hope that this will be McLaren in 2013. Why? (Yes mashie another bit of illogical thinking coming here), I used to live close to their HQ many years ago.

Anyway time to leave the pit wall.....

p.s. thought Balotelli was a bit of (insert whatever), never met him mind 😉

Pretty spot on. All the greats have a touch of the ruthless about them.

FWIW I hope LH does well. Mercedes deserve a bit of success. The have hung around as a works team longer then a lot of other manufacturers.

EDIT Actually its only their 4th season as a works team, seems longer

A whole 3 years in their present stint 🙂

EDIT: There's rumour aplenty at the moment that they're trying to untangle themselves from running the team too.

While we are on the subject of Lewis H, anyone remember the time he lied to the stewards?
That was when I stopped cheering for him.
Really hope it's Button's year again.

He is a bit of a moaner as well tbh
Sacked his own dad as well iirc

Apart from that he is ace and as Binners notes only "joyless bastards" resent him

Lewis's talent is amazing. Hes so entertaining to watch- he has utter speed that is tempered by rashness. I've always said if he can control his bloody head he'd be unbeatable but out of the car stuff really seems to come into his work.

Its a bit of a concern that neither Caterham or Marussia seem to have made up any ground on the mid-field pack. I know its early days in testing but the signs aren't good.

The topic LH incites ludicrous defensiveness like no other. Just because he is a genius driver (in most respects - lacking in the temperament department) and he is black, doesn't mean he is not a bit of an idiot.

In this instance it would seem the car's brakes were at fault, but I don't think it is impossible that he would stretch beyond limits in order to make an impression on his first day. Hamilton is the black Mansell.

Surely that is a pedantry fail?
I think we all realise that you can only sack someone you employ [ his dad as manger] so he did indeed sack [as in cease to employ] his own dad. My statement is true

But I said it because you seemed shocked he would sack him because he was his dad. But he didn’t sack his dad, he sacked the person who wasn’t doing the job he wanted as a manager. Who happened to be his dad.

Right, though I'm all for random slagging, it was a mechanical failure not a driver failure. Unfortunate, but kind of hard to see how Hamilton's occasionally crappy attitude increases the chance of brake hose failure.

Unless we think Mercedes are inventing a car problem to protect their driver, but that doesn't seem that likely, mechanical error's more reputation-damaging than drivers going too fast- that's what drivers do.

Didn't you hear Northwind? He was pushing the car to its limits, that's obviously why it broke 😉 🙄

If he wasn't pushing it I'd worry he isn't really going to get his head round the car considering they consistently need to maintain a very high speed for the duration of a race. So testing at race speed is important.

The quicker hes upto speed with the car the better. As I said earlier though my worry is Schu couldn't even come close to pulling the car up the grid yet Kimi had a better do with a average car (yes engine but the Merc has a Merc engine like the Mclarens)..

Rosberg was able to get a lot more out of it than Schumacher managed but Hamilton is only going to add a couple of tenths.
Theses early tests are all about going through their programmes and testing various bits and ideas rather than trying to see how fast it'll go per se.
Last test at Barcelona should give us an idea of who's where although the Lotus and McLaren look particularly well sorted early on.

seems he's already pushing it beyond its limits

he's found the limit now about a second faster than his 2012 barcelona pole 1:21.707 in the mclaren he's just lapped it at 1:20.817 ! in the mercedes 😯

down to 1:20.558 now

Yeah, he's a bit of a moaner. I still want to see him do well though. Always supported Lewis.

My major gripe about the drivers isn't their attitude though, it's far more serious than that. My problem with them is beyond reproach....

Gentlemen, there are only two acceptable face ornaments (as opposed to just not shaving), for a racing driver.

This.

Lewis will do alright. he's the fastest driver in F1 as he proved on Top Gear when he lapped their track nearly a second faster than Vettel in the liana. That is the closest you will ever get to the drivers having the same equipment to race each other so is a good indicator of true speed.

Mercedes will definitely be competitive this year. With one car anyway. 😉

Lewis has always been able to outperform the car, there's no doubt that he will do the same this year in the Mercedes. He's raw, aggressive and is the arguably the best at overtaking. I think he's found the rise of Vettel frustrating, and that with things like DRS and KERS; his considerable advantage in his ability to overtake has been diminished. So we may have seen a different side to Lewis since his early seasons of 07 and 08, where he was sublime. Another point about his attitude and his lying to the stewards can be contrasted with Alonso's attitude as Lewis rose to the top and the things that went on at McLaren, but now Alonso is seen as very favorable. So with Lewis switching teams may refocus him to what many people found to like in him originally.

But Rosberg is no slouch, he'll be sure to push him this year!

Top Gear proves nothing at all. The car is nominally the same, but I doubt the preparation is anything like scientific - no account is taken of driver weight, air temperature and pressure have a big effect on engine performance, the track has very few corners, etc etc.

Having said that I don't doubt LH is among the very fastest, and may well be especially good at jumping in any old thing and getting the most out of it.

I expect NR to be pretty similar in results - very much like JB was. The difference at the highest level in any sport is in the head.

i can't wait for the first race, i saw Nico driving the car at silverstone 2 weeks ago and it does look tidy in the high speed corners, i think/hope Lewis will be able to place the car well, from what i've seen and heard from Barcelona it's looking positive.

the way i see it there is only two guys on the grid that can put just about put any 'good' car at the front and stay there, one is driving a red car, the other is lewis.

i have to admit i wasn't lewis's biggest fan in the last few years, i though he moaned to much and made some bad excuses (especially the 'is it cos i's black' incident-which i thought was more than a little cheap), but i have to say it took a man to leave Mcalren, the moment he did that he became one in my eyes,

good on him i say.

i have a feeling this may turn out well, maybe not this year but in 2014 Mercedes will have the edge and lewis should be able to deliver.

Nope, he is the fastest F1 driver of a Liana.
Other cars/formulas mean bugger all in comparison to F1 e.g. Frentzen used to spank Schumacher in sport cars (both Merc drivers), didn't do so well against him in F1...

Actually he's the fastest of the handful of current drivers who have gone on top gear to set a time in a liana. AFAIK alonso hasn't set a time, or maldonado, or BOTTAS. So top gear times prove as much about the overall ranking of drivers as testing times prove about the pace of the cars. The first qualifying session is when we get a first proper comparison. Can't wait!

This. F1 qualifying doesn't tell you who's a fast driver. It tells you which combo of car/driver is fastest on the day. Lewis is the fastest driver around the TG track in their Liana. I would like to see Alonso take the challenge. He could beat the time, he may not. Those two are the fastest drivers there's no doubt but I think Lewis is fastest of all.

Who gives a shit how fast he drove a Suzuki around some crap hole track?! He didn't seem to be taking it that seriously himself. He's an F1 driver, that is where he is judged!

Him Teflonso and Vettel are a class apart IMO. I used to be a huge Lewis fanboi-not so much nowadays. Never liked Nando , but if pushed I'd have to say that he is the best.

LH has a talent. I doubt he'll exploit it ever. Im still a fan. I have his 08 winning decal on the bavk of my car still. Go Lewis!

Remember-back British and don't be racist. 😉

I spoke to someone at Lotus recently. Kimi is friendly but turns up, does what he needs to and leaves with minimal words. 😆
