because it turns out they had enough info to investigate, but they left it until after the end of the season, and under the rules at the time the race results for Singapore should have been nullified if they’d have investigated straight away

I've now read every article and forum post I can find on this, and not a single one can point out a specific rule or reason that the race would be voided in this scenario, only that Bernie said it would be.

On that basis I'm inclined to think it is utter horse shit.

I was going to post that WEC is live this weekend for those who have Discovery+/Eurosport - should be a good race.

This was scary though - really shouldn’t have got through that fence…

From the photos on that thread the fence was intact. It seems to me the car was launched off the tyres over the fence.

Pause the video at 7 seconds in and you see the fence is ruined so something has defo gone through it which is scary! (looks to be the engine!) luckily the seating area was empty

Ah right. I was looking at this

1

...but after your post I looked again and saw this

2

See the fence to the right. That's a big gravel trap and a tyre wall which ought to contain the car.

Seems the F1 teams have done a 'gains -v- fine' cost analysis!... 🙂

That reads like Red Bull saying "look at all these bad people, we weren't actually cheating that much last year after all". Really wish the cost cap submissions and review were more closely coupled to the season they apply to - yes it's complicated but this is F1, everything is complicated.

So, just wondering how this in-season change is gonna impact the cost cap? Is this gonna give teams a chance to fudge their numbers (as, I assume, there must be some financial incentive for the teams as the vote for this change was unanimous).
What happens if there's a major crash during the sprint and either teams don't have enough time to rebuild cars or don't have sufficient funds?

It’s just all very ‘American’. And sad to see Stefano dancing to Liberties tune.

Money has always been king in F1 but you kind of felt Bernie still had one eye on the heritage.

WTF, I can't keep track of when I should watch the F1, and which are the most important bits to watch. It was all very easy when it was Qualifying and Race.

And, what about the budget cap? More tyres and a mandated Sprint Qualy strategy plus more mechanical wear on the cars introduced after the season has started...

No, no I didn't. Bernie would 've sold his granny into slavery for a race in some backwater run by an aged despot and their feeble attempt to give their regime some credibility. The fact that F1 runs races in some of the worst places on earth, and no longer in some of the more iconic European venues is almost entirely Bernie's Legacy.

Watching FP1 at work now - If the aim of these format changes was to mix up the grid it may actually work.

Alpine are now basically screwed for the race - Gasly on fire and Ocon out with related issue.

Mercedes - not setting things alight and Russell stuck in the pits.

Straight into main race qualifying this afternoon, so no time to sort things out.

Oops, bit of a strange mistake from Nyck there, he was carrying way too much speed. Wonder if the brakes lost too much temperature on the long straight.

Nowt gets me shouting at the stupid box like Verstappen! He’s had a right pop at George post race, and TBF to George he was much more polite and apologetic than he needed to be - a swift “jog on pal” would have been more than adequate!

George was very mature on his post race interview. Basically, I’ve got nowt to lose and I’m up the inside on cold tyres, why risk it. Just wait a few laps and get the place back on DRS. Which is exactly what happened.

Another foul mouth tirade by Verstappen becuase someone dared to overtake him. I’m sure Jos is in a hotel chopping up George Russell dolls with a meat cleaver also.

I had a feeling last seasons Verstappen was a mask, and surely it is. If Liberty weren’t chuckling about the sensationalist headlines he creates, he should be penalise for brining the sport into disripute - it’s not a role model for youngsters.

Alice Powell was funny on C4. She said directly to Horner that it seemed Max like to dish it out but couldn’t take it. And for once even Horner didn’t massively defend Max.

Can’t imagine Coulthard or Webber asking that.

And as ever his chirpy team boss has his back…

Horner quipped that it was wise for Russell to keep his helmet on during that heated Verstappen exchange, adding that this incident is not one which Verstappen will forget any time soon.

There has already been a precedent set for that, Verstappen remembering a past occurrence with team-mate Sergio Perez, unknown beyond the Red Bull circle, which caused him to refuse to yield a position to Perez in Sao Paulo last season.

“I think he voiced his opinion to George, it’s probably a good idea he left his crash helmet on!” Horner said of that post-sprint bust-up between Verstappen and Russell.

“But you can understand that, he’s a competitive driver and when you get damage to your car and it affects your race, I’d be disappointed if he was just happy with that.

“He’s like an elephant, he’ll remember that, he’ll bank that for a while.”

So Max will let this small racing incident fester in his head - not what I’d want from a Champion.

So an open admission from a Team Manager that hid driver is probably capable of physical violence and is definitely likely to find revenge on the track, without any hint of managing the situation from Horner himself.

This kind of stuff needs to be sanctioned / actioned upon before someone get unnecessarily hurt. Why isn't F1 stepping in? Oh I forgot, headlines = $$$$$ which is more important these days.

Just wait a few laps and get the place back on DRS. Which is exactly what happened.

But if that's what all the drivers did, we'd be moaning how boring it was.

Which is why DRS needs to go.

We’d have more Max/George type stuff and less ‘I’ll just wait for the DRS zone’ stuff. George knows he can’t outdrag the Red Bull so his only chance was get ahead and hope he could keep Max behind with some crafty driving (like LeClerc did).

F1 have no problem changing the whole format of a race weekend at the last minute so why not try a weekend with no DRS.

And if the cars were smaller, lighter and more nimble they’d have both got through that corner fine! 😀

I completely agree it would have been more boring if he’d backed out. However, if he’d boxed clever and thought more than 1 apex ahead maybe he would have been further up the order without a banged up motor.

DRS definitely needs looking at more generally though. Far far too powerful. I think they said they’d reduced the size of the zone at Baku? But they’re just playing round the edges at the moment.

I’m hoping LeClerc can keep his cool today/not bottle it and his team makes the right strategy calls.

Looking forward to the race!

Really happy for Perez. Would’ve been interesting to see what would’ve happened if he didn’t get lucky under the SC.

Not sure WTF happened with Alpine pitting on last lap and there being a load of press at the pit speed limit line?! Really dangerous situation.

That pass was the pass that killed F1. Rules will need changing. Again. I thought DRS was on the way out precisely because cars were now designed for closer racing. Apparently not. And yes, I fell asleep.

So sad for my F1 history. Early 2000's I used to be knackered after watching races, so intense, especially with Murray's commentary. I watched today's race in the garage playing pool and darts with the grandkids and it was all a bit...meh.
Shame. Touring cars are just as bad, manufactured jeopardy compromising the actual event.

Not good news. I spent my late teens at my mates house either watching Mansell / Senna / Prost going wheel to wheel or Rikard Ridels Volvo estate.

Now we have 2 hrs of “as you were” or a petulant teenager.

After Max called Russell "Princess George" last week, today Russell said "It was all a little bit pathetic. There’s something you learn as a kid is if you’re gonna give something you gotta be willing to take it as well."

"little bit poor that he spat his dummy out about it"

I'm down for this rivalry!

(although anything to liven up this season works tbh)

Sooo, quali then...

Leclerc bins it again - getting to be a habit.

Not a good day for Lewis

Great result for Perez, and will have annoyed Max no end (good)

Mixed up grid with loads of people who wouldn't normally be up front so could be a messy few opening laps

At least the front (well, the bit behind Perez as he skips off into the distance) will be slightly more interesting for the couple of laps before DRS kicks in a Verstappen pulls past 2-3 cars at a time along the mahoosive straight.

Lec on his day is really quite something, sadly those days are not every weekend. I think this is why he is likely to never be a world champion. I think had Ferrari got a stronger lineup then last season they would have fought RB a lot harder.

There's rumours that Mercedes are lining Leclec up to take over when Hamilton retires. If they can build a car that'll take on the RB, that'll be worth watching.

Isn’t Russell Hamilton’s already replacement? That’s what he was mentored for.

I’d not have Leclerc - just too many unforced errors. And Russell would wipe the floor with him. Current Ferrari line-up lacks aggression IMO. Sainz = Bottas v2.

If Hamilton retires sooner than later I’d make Russell defacto No.1 and pop Albon in the other seat as Merc don’t seem have another Russell in the pipeline.

Leclerc is a spectacularly good qualifier. Ferrari haven't given him a car capable of mounting a title challenge but it's not for lack of trying on his part. If he had a car as good as the Red Bull or the best Mercs, I think you'd see him crashing much less because he wouldn't have to drive on the limit so much. I'm pretty sure any team on the grid would be thrilled to sign him, he's an absolutely top driver. Hamilton will retire sometime in the next few years and I think Leclerc and Norris would have to be very high on Merc's list of potential replacements. They will want to hire the best driver they can get and those two, plus Verstappen, are the standouts.

Leclerc has 19 pole positions and five race victories. Verstappen has 22 pole positions and 37 race victories. Sainz has three pole positions and one race victory. Leclerc has been outperforming his car.

Sadly I don’t think he has a hope of keeping Verstappen behind him on that long straight.

But has max realised that he doesn't have to overtake everyone at any opportunity (and risk damage) when he can just use neweys DRS rocket assist a few corners later. His approach to the first 2 laps will be interesting as he's starting right in the carnage zone - too far back to hope for a bit of space and not far enough forward to avoid getting nerfed by someone at the tail end trying a glory move.

This is why I’m glad they put a differentiator in from the build up show and the race on the coverage. Particularly for the ‘Mercian rounds.

Also, you can normally tell just how much of a shit Americans really give about a sporting event, based on the cost of the military hardware involved in the fly past. There wasn’t one…
