Bernie states the the race should’ve been cancelled – that this was part of the sporting code of governance at the time.

It wasn't cancelled. It's like Abu Dhabi 2021 - the race officials made decisions, a winner was declared, points awarded, time to move on.

Okay Zandvort time! Predictions? Hard to look beyond Verstappen for me.

Mercedes seem to be having a bit of fun with this post (but how good would a hamilton win be, on Verstappens home ground?!)

Under those circumstances, Massa would’ve won the title.

Bernie Ecclestone in "talking utter shite to get a reaction then later pretending not to remember saying it" shocker 😉

There is no such rule. Renault could have had points docked, DQd or time penalty added. There is nothing in the rules to allow the entire race to be declared null for this offence.

Missed Apex ran the numbers and of all the possible outcomes, there are none in which Massa finishes ahead of Hamilton, in fact he mostly finishes further back in the WDC because for example DQing or adding a time penalty for Alonso moves Hamilton up to 2nd, but Massa only up to 12th, therefore still out of the points.

Does that include if Renault are thrown out of the championship and the points are allocated?

I think that was one of the scenarios discussed. Have to listen back to double check.

Over the last few weeks there's been constant rumblings over Lewis's contract, and more recently Stroll's position in the sport (latest is he's taking up tennis professionally!)...

...could Stroll Snr be getting his cheque book out to reunite Lewis and Fernando for their bromance career swan-song as best buddies! 🙂

Haaahahaha Hammy + Alonso back together!? Now that really would be silly season!

That would be very amusing to watch that unfolded.  Drive to Survive could probably do a whole spin off show just on them two.

Surely it would make Aston Martin the F1 equivalent of Eastbourne? It’d be Red Bull versus Horlicks.

Oh man, looks like Ricciardo has hurt his hand or wrist, during his crash trying to avoid the stranded Mclaren.

oh, how i hope this to be true.

lance can save face.

Snr can then sell his team to andretti (is it andretti?) and make even more money.

the only folk who lose on the arrangement would be lewis or fernando and their respective fans.

could be a best 2 of 3 seasons. would certainly up my interest in F1.

Albon looking impressive in FP sessions, Maclaren looking quick too, upgrades seem to working at all tracks.

Looking forward to seeing Liam Lawson, be good to see him in the second Red Bull instead of Checo.

Expecting lots of Orange this weekend

Think there will be some interesting battle's going on, but from second position down the rest of the field.

And yes the Dutch national anthem will be played.

As much as I like Danny Ric I feel it's time for him to move to another series. He's not shown great pace since his comeback (certainly not enough to be alongside Max). And he forgot rule No.1 of crashing a car - 'take your hands off the steering wheel!'.

Good luck to Liam Lawson - the top team may need you quicker than you thought! Yuki, Checo, Ricciardo are all just OK drivers.

No comparision in his prime - but he’s lost something and I can’t see what Red Bull will gain by swapping him for Perez.

They want a clear number 2 and Perez is filling that role.

I think they would prefer him to be closer to MV in case something goes wrong and act as a buffer.  Ronnie Peterson was the best number 2 driver, he finished the race on Mario Andretti's gearbox.

So race stopped because those on inters were aquaplaning when full wets were needed?

No because a car was in the direct firing line of a 200kmph aquaplaning straight.

Jeopardy doesn’t need to involve death but we’re getting to the point where unless conditions are perfect they don’t race.  The very best racers always shone when it was wet because it served as a leveller.

Yeah I did spot the stranded car after i'd posted. The barrier was damaged/ disturbed and you needed the race stopping to protect the crew to fix it which was fair enough.

But I am a little fed up with stoppages unless it's marginal for inters.
Am I imagining it or was there a time when you had to go to wets? (Or was that just for starts?).

It was mentioned in the spa commentary "I don't know why we have wets, no one uses them as the teams & drivers moan and delay the start till you can use inters","if you can use inters it's not a wet race".

I also want to punch the stupid mascot that got air time, it's not the NFL.

Perhaps am just grumpy but it didn't seem a good race.

Even allowing for the Red Bull dominance, for all their efforts on technical specs, the use of street circuits and short courses and this seeming need to keep re-setting races is killing F1 as a sporting spectacle.

It's mandatory to use wets for a safety car restart except for this race they amended the rules to let them start on inters as the pitlane is so tight that it couldn't cope with 20 cars following the safety car into the pitlane to switch to inters.

i agree. though if the race hadn’t been red flagged on sunday there would have been a pileup.

the american audience likes a restart. let’s just hope they don’t all start crashing on the restart like they often do in indy cars. that said, i like indy cars. when the race goes well, it is very entertaining

Everyone hates the full wet tyre as it's uniformly slower in all conditions in which the intermediate might be usable, even if only for a portion of the lap.  It also creates even more spray than the inters and makes it almost impossible for the drivers to see.  This is part of the reason we don't see full wet racing anymore.

These cars aren't well suited to wet racing at all. Too much spray sent upwards. Plus increasing the diameter of the tyre to avoid aquaplaning on the plank reduces the downforce from the floor.

One thing I think that could help is using track sweepers like in indycar whenever there is a red flag period, so that they don't go back out straight into standing water.

Does anyone really want Leclerc at the moment?  He seems to be unable to find the limit and stay at it.  The sheer number of crashes this year must be causing headaches at Ferrari.

He regularly finds the limit. Just behind him on the left normally.

I think the rest of the team are quite relieved as it takes the attention off their 'inspired' strategy decisions.

It looks good on the whole, the rear wing is a bit interesting.

Here's the theory behind it:

As F1 chief technical officer Pat Symonds told Motorsport.com recently: "One of the objectives, and what we're trying to do in 2026, is to get rid of the DRS train.

...you mean the DRS that the current regs where designed to do away with completely!? 🙂

The F2 car does remind one of how rubbish F1 wheel covers are.

Pretty obvious that Hamilton sees the growth of the car to “competitive” for the next two years, then if it isn’t, can bail before the next regs change.  Last chance saloon for that 8th title.

They should make DRS like push to pass in Indycar, give them say 200 (adjust for track) seconds of DRS they can use anytime in a DRS zone, suddenly it becomes tactical, use it for passing, catching up, in/out laps, how much to keep until later?

Agree too as well - if they are going to keep it it needs to be re-thought into a racing aid, not an end of the straight passing aid. Current useage encourages lazy overtaking. And the 'run to mummy crying' approach to forceful overtaking needs to change too as that discourages 50/50 chances.

Push to pass DRS would be great but let's get ride of harvesting and battery boost. It's just a saving the planet publicity campaign so they can say the cars are hybrid. Leave the electrics to Formula E and give us back some fuel driven horses and sounds. I don't mind if the fuel is synthetic or chip fat but let's have engine-gearbox-wheels with the only electrics going to the spark plugs*

*Simplified I know but you know what I mean
