We'll see when they empty the tanks at the second test. I very much doubt anyone will show their hand before the last day of the Bahrain test.
Holy side pods batman!

Ahh, was on the previous page, my bad.
Still, RB have gone full on batmobile with this one!
Every team is apparently suffering from porpoising - brilliant! Apparently the simulations didn't think it was a thing (like it was 30 years ago) but its there in real life

Where did you read about this? I need to catch up!!
The Race had a bit about it today
https://the-race.com/formula-1/gary-anderson-the-old-ground-effect-obstacle-facing-f1-teams/
Yep - The Race has become my go-to website for sensible F1 info. 👍
And so much for no live-coverage! Excellent work from the Journos for info, photos and timings today, and I'll catch up on some TV action later tonight.
And I hope Albon hammers Latifi this season - he didn't get a fair deal at Red Bull after being dumped in at the deep-end in 2019.

No chance, GOATifi WDC '22 you heard it here first 🏆
I feel sorry for Mick, who only managed to get eight laps in after the Haas picked up some floor damage.
I did see Gary Anderson's comments about porpoising, the anecdote of the late 70s Ligier bouncing it's front wheels two inches clear of the tarmac at Monza was an eye opener.
There was another comment after the Gary Anderson one, saying that every team currently seems to be affected

The teams must have anticipated this, right? I wonder if they're running firmer suspension to compensate or whether the effect can be mitigated with adjustments to the front wing settings?

Comment was that it hadn’t shown up in the sims, so who knows

Thanks for that! Really interesting!
I wonder if the F1 teams are playing around with purposely trying to stall those venturi tunnels at high speed (i.e. when not cornering) to reduce induced drag and just haven't got them quite right yet. In the same way that flexi wings and t-tray's were used before? Sure I read somewhere that flexi floors were already a point of concern.
Why is Kubica there?
Nothing against him personally but why? Surely Zhou needs all the running he can get. And if Zhou really can't do it for some reason why not try out Illot or Schwarzman or someone like that, a potential future driver?
What does Kubica bring which Bottas doesn't in terms of experience?

The FIA have now mandated that suspension pick up points must be within the wheel rim, which has already put paid to any meaningful ride height change through steering input. I'm intrigued as to how teams mitigate the porpoising over the season.

The cars look great in photos but jeez the look fat and sluggish through the last Chicane. I knows it’s testing but still, I miss the days when the cars looked a handful to drive and we’re dancing around a bit and looked one edge.
Comment about porpoising…
Apparently, Alfa Romeo suffered from it so badly at its Fiorano shakedown that it wore a hole in the car.

I bet Valteri's bum scraping the ground didn't half make him whale!

Hamilton commented that the cars are much heavier and Latifi that the drivers can't see over the larger wheels in some corners, and that the "relevant spatial awareness" needs to be learned to corner correctly.

Yeah he's not wrong, they've gained 155kg in 10 years, basically adding the heft of two people.
Being 3 up makes a noticeable difference in a hot hatch, must be unbelievable in a single seater.
It's worth pointing out that an 2022 F1 car has exactly half the fuel capacity of a 1984 F1 car.
I know that the early 1980s cars were nuts, but in 2022 we're going much faster with about 55% more mass, but we're burning half as much fuel.

I remember being driven in Grandads bright green Austin Allegro along the M6 when we were overtaken by a Ferrari and a Porsche who both appeared to be playing. Grandad said "You don't want one of those lad, this Allegro uses much less petrol"
If only I could get a bedroom poster of the Allegro LE in green. That whole MPG thing sold it to me over any Ferrari or Porsche

Okay, you have me there.
So.....
Russian Grand Prix this year? Да or нет ??
Russian money in F1 this year?
I'd say no, but I've never been thrilled with F1 visiting the likes of China and Saudi and Qatar and....
Not that it was much better in the olden days - sure they weren't (openly) taking money from questionable regimes but instead promoted healthy living through fags and booze.
Russian money in F1 this year?
Squeaky bum time for Haas?
FWIW I found the Sky F1 Wrap Up very good last night. There was a long section paused outside Merc/RB/Ferrari/AM/Maclaren garages with camera's on zooming in to explain side pods, floors, push/pull rods, wings and different idealogy around ground effect and car design within the rules.
Formula 1 has had some dodgy associations in the past, there were races in Apartheid era South Africa for example. One detail that did surprise me was that the decidedly non-PC James Hunt was a vocal critic of the Apartheid regime in South Africa and gave financial support to anti-Apartheid groups in SA.
Back to 2022 though, I cannot see Haas's sponsorship being well received and I daresay that the Russian GP will probably be cancelled.
I daresay that the Russian GP will probably be cancelled
On the BBC website...
The page selling tickets for the Russian Grand Prix has disappeared from the official F1 website, and one promoting the Turkish Grand Prix has appeared.
This has led to speculation that the Russian event in Sochi will be cancelled and replaced by one at Turkey's Istanbul Park. But F1 said this was a development issue with the website and "nothing deliberate".
Oops
Gunther Steiner no longer available for the upcoming press conference.....
Probably coincidence
This could be an opportunity for Andretti to swoop in and buy an F1 team.
Vettel saying he won't go, if it goes ahead.
Says Russia has a strange and mad leadership 🙂
Not sure if the link will work, some porpoising...
Wow...that's really striking!
Am assuming that is slowed down footage?
Can't be comfortable driving it when it is bouncing like that
Didn't take long...
Haas to remove Russian colours and Uralkali branding from car
Someone has gone and done a Brawn!
They have a white car with virtually no sponsor stickers on it. I remember that as the most striking thing when I first saw the Brawn originally - before it started winning of course.
He wouldn't be world champion if it weren't for Masi's actions so I'm not surprised at Max's thoughts. I'd bet he's the only driver that thinks that way too.

Quite! You prob shouldn't bite the hand that gifts you a world championship
I really can't stand MV and RB but to be fair MV he didn't say Masi made right/wrong decision, he said that article that it was unfair Masi was sacked as the people who sacked him were the people that didn't give him the support or protection (from the teams) he needed, so I think he feels sorry that Masi was made to be the fall guy.
I suppose the problem is that many teams wouldn't want Masi in post even if there was loads of support given and the structure changed for 2022, so Masi was always going to have to go.
Haas to remove Russian colours and Uralkali branding from car
Have I picked up right that Mazepin Snr was one of those at Putin's Oligarch meeting the other day? Likely to end up with personal and professional sanctions from US. Wonder if Mazepin Jnr will remain as driver if Daddy's cash dries up.
Hopefully not, and a good chance for Andretti to swoop in and buy the team if the Uralkalie cash dries up.
No chance. He is only tolerated due to daddy's money.
Andretti and Haas might be a good fit in a Team America context
You've got to wonder how Gene H does his due diligence - first off he picks the one and only Rich Energy then when that goes south he signs up some questionable Russian money with strings (a not very good driver) attached - who next?
Andretti and Haas might be a good fit in a Team America context
They've probably got a bundle of red white and blue stickers going spare now, just need to rearrange them as some stars and stripes.
You’ve got to wonder how Gene H does his due diligence
Desperation knows not of such things
You've got to wonder why Gene Haas ever entered F1! He's seemed disengaged from the process since the start.
Steiner has hinted during this session that Mazepin's future is not guaranteed. Asked by Scott Mitchell about the situation, Steiner says explicitly that it "needs to be resolved".
Ooft. I mean, we all know he’s a pay driver but those 4 words say a lot about his place in the team (imo)
Desperation knows not of such things
Ah yes, Rich Energy.

**** Yeah!!
From the FIA and F1...
On Thursday evening Formula 1, the FIA, and the teams discussed the position of our sport, and the conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances.
Those last few words "in the current circumstances" concern me. They should have been clearer and said as long as Putin is in charge and Russia is a threat.
It leaves the door open for them to quickly change their minds and take the $$$!!
Well they've got until September to decide.......
Still shown on the official race schedule.
I had heard rumours that Turkey was poised to replace it.

Turkey '22 was showing on the official site a few days back, I was able to subscribe to ticket news. I think they said it was a 'website glitch'...i.e. somebody clicked publish a bit too early.

Two nice things happened today, F1 did the right thing and withdrew the racw in Russia and Hamilton finished top of the rankings. I appreciate the usual caveats apply but it least it's unlikely to be an absolute dog of a car!
Andretti Global has an engine supply deal sorted with Renault.
F1 withdrew from the Russian GP because of pressure from the drivers who were threatening to boycott the race, it was a decision they were forced into by the drivers, not one made because they are an organisation with morals.
And once again Seb appeared to be the leader and f1's moral compass.
Still going to Saudi Arabia though, yeah?
Morals, schmorals.
Indeed scotroutes.

Call me cynical, but I think it was just because there's a war on and there was really no way of shipping all the equipment in and out of Russia, plus financial sanctions, etc. The race was never going to happen once the war kicked off.
They managed to get everything in and out of Bahrain in the middle of all that fuss in 2012.
Not their finest hour really
Indycar's looking promising this year. Some great new drivers coming through, probably four teams in with a shot at the title. I always though Scott McLaughlin was Aussie, he was racing taxicabs until his first year in single-seaters last year. Turns out he's NZer, same as Scott Dixon. Very impressive weekend for McLaughlin, he seems to be the real deal.

I suspect the big problem for Mazepin will be getting money from Russia to wherever the Hass bank accounts are.
Aye, that and some countries will probably have their own sanctions regarding travel or visa bans for Russian citizens
Looks like UK Motorsport have done what FIA failed to:
