I’m going for a test livery rather than anything that’ll be raced
Ermmmm, is it just me or did Red Bull just repaint the F1 show car?! 🤔
Ermmmm, is it just me or did Red Bull just repaint the F1 show car?! 🤔
Seems so!! 🙂
So these launches are just going to be livery launches. 👎
Yep, unless others follow the line of Haas and show the actual car, this is going to be the most anti-climatic launch season in recent memory. They should have forced teams to show the actual cars off. Not long to wait until the next ones to see if this is a trend across the whole grid, but it does take the shine off a fair bit!
Horner "by the first race the car isn't going to look much like this". Think i'll just wait for the photos of all the next launches
To further remove doubt, Autosport are reporting it as just being an updated show car too
Interesting development here…
Yeah, I don't see much beyond the enquiry finding that Masi royally cocked it up. I think he's going to be their fall guy. Trouble is they'll want to thread a fine path from "Yeah, we cocked up, and handed Max the championship" through to "...but we're not going to change the outcome" which is ultimately where they (the FIA) want to get to I think.
I somehow doubt we've heard the last of the 2021 season for a while yet.
Red Bull$hitters
I even had to look at Karen's face for 10 minutes before the 'reveal'! 🤢
Last week's Haas reveal was limited to digital renderings, so the RB18 is the first liveried 2022 car we've see in the wild as it were.
Compare and contrast with the FIA mock-up from last year. Even the air intakes and roll hoop assembly look identical (to my eyes at least).
Its going to be very interesting to see how the FIA play the Abu Dhabi/Masi video for sure. I don't think they can change the result as far as rules go, but if they could to "right the wrong", do they take a result from when the Safety Car was deployed, thus changing the outcome of the championship? Or do they void the whole race and Max is still champion? Or do nothing, accept it wasn't handled correctly and Masi takes the fall?
Or do they void the whole race and Max is still champion?
No. Ferrari/Sainz wouldn't like that as he'd be back behind Norris. This is the trouble with a multi-team event. At a rugby match for instance you could change the decision and it on;y affects the two teams there.
Or do nothing, accept it wasn’t handled correctly and Masi takes the fall?
is my guess. "Rules were misinterpreted in the heat of the moment, we've changed them so it won't happen again next year and the guy who did it is gone"
I don't think it was a fix to benefit Max per se, more fixed to get a last racing lap in which just happened to benefit Max. Giving Massi the benefit of the doubt he would have made the same cock-up if Lewis had been behind on fresh tyres.
Interesting development here…
There's not really anything new there, but it is interesting how this stuff keeps resurfacing. There's clearly still a lot of strong feelings out there, it's definitely not going away any time soon

Quite possibly, but I do think there was a strong push to get anyone but Mercedes to win a championship- from the new regs disadvantaging low rake cars onwards. It just so happened that Max was the one in the right position to benefit

Not much in the way of photos
It's such a shame the conspiracy theory thread was closed.
At least they've included the steering wheel

I was a bit slow to get the joke but it made me chuckle once I did.
I like the subtle ones lol
Just watching the Aston Martin launch on Sky.
How wooden/awkward is Lawrence Stroll??
Car looks good though 👍
Looks nice that! 🙂

The Sidepod inlets look a bit weird, but a fan of the rest! Looks very different to the Haas, so potential for some more differentiation across the grid than perhaps feared. Still think the wheel covers look garbage though!

Weird! Can't get my image links to work. Doing the same as normal.
See they've taken inspiration from Hillary's blinds for the top of the sidepods! 🙂
So, Seb's barnet then? Transplants, sirup or combover?
The green and the flatness of it makes me think of a toad
One thing I will be glad to see the back of is high-rake F1 cars. Being an old fart F1 cars should be slammed to the track, not have their arse a foot in the air! 🙂

Yes, the recent Adrian Newey cars remind me of dragsters - everything compromised for the launch out of the blocks, the whole car flexing just to get that last ounce of rear tyre grip.

That really is a nice looking car...

...looks like it's running steelies too! 🙂

Yeah, hubcaps aside, I think the new regs have at least made the cars look cleaner and less cluttered.

You mean unlike the 2008 cars?!

little video clip, front wing looks high!

That Aston is one smart looking F1 car.
That looks very smart! Makes it all the more baffling why they aren't doing the usual coverage of the "shakedown" first test...
So, Seb’s barnet then? Transplants, sirup or combover?
I was thinking the same when I saw it on Instagram, combover imho.
Hopefully the new green livery is more distinctive on TV as well, though with Merc supposedly reverting to silver this year the 'which dark coloured car is that?' confusion may go away. (Plus of course, the Aston doesn't look like last year's Merc 😀 )
Those front wing 'end plates' are going to make things interesting when they're taken off by a rear wheel...
Or, are they now stronger as it looks like they're part of the lower wing?
Ruddy ‘ell McLaren are dragging this launch livestream out! 🤣🤣

I think they're designed to be stronger so there is less debris on the track if there's any contact. Less debris = Less safety cars (sorry for mentioning safety cars!)
That was a long drawn out launch! Gorgeous car though, really like that McLaren…
McLaren's MCL36 has been revealed.. I'm getting mid 2010s Specialized Stumpjumper vibes.
It looks neat, no doubt some of the more important details are yet to be shown. Pullrod suspension means that there's less to get in the way of airflow. I'm slightly disappointed in the lack of louvres, but am hopeful of more podiums this year.
louvres
What are they?
What are they?
It's where the teams keep their halos
louvres,
Shit. Sorry, I let the team down...etc.
Shit. I let the team down…etc
Yeah but what are they?
Apparently the report is out later today

We're obviously all feeling a bit 'meh' about another render livery launch from Alpha Tauri! 🙂
Yeah, its not even that impressive a render. If it matches reality then it looks like a very sculpted sidepod and engine cover design, but what mostly caught my eye was just the little HRC logos on the side
At least they've had the decency to show a render of the actual car, not just taken us all for mugs like their colleagues at Red Bull and their show car with a new livery nonsense! Looking forward to the Williams launch tomorrow, be interesting to see the new livery and if it's an actual car.
I'm quite impressed with the variety of solutions on offer from the teams thus far.
AM, McL and AT all have significantly different sidepod concepts, and AT having a long nose, while the other two a short nose and "hanging" main plane of the front wing. It also looks to me like the AM has a more pronounced anhedral shape to the front wing, that may get more/cleaner air to the centre of teh floor/venturi's...
Waiting for the big boys to launch now... Lets see what RB/Merc/Ferarri have to show... THough I reckon at least one will have a sub-optimal concept that needs heavy revision through the season.

I'm concerned that the show car with a livery is the new Williams
😉
Just seen that Williams have signed with Duracell? Black and gold back in F1??? William Storey will be gutted. Huge risk for Duracell though, the press will already be preparing their headlines "No other car looks like it. No other car comes last like it."
Huge risk for Duracell though
The only risk is it turns out that the Williams is so slow that whatever duracells they're using don't last the full race.
And the rest of the paddock will be preparing their Duracell powered rampant rabbit pranks! 🙂
Looks like the FIA is taking a leaf out of Sue Grey's book - no inquiry outcomes or proposals yet, perhaps some update 'later this week'. But we get 3 sprint qualis. Yay. (#sarcasm)
The Sprint Race qualifying seems a contradiction, there's a price cap in place, no-one is going to go balls out except MV because he can't see the big picture in the race.
I think over the course of the three sprints last year Checo lost out twice and Hamilton had a massively impressive drive in the last one.
Did anything else even remotely interesting happen?

Not sure Ferrari can be classed as a big boy anymore. I don't see them doing anything at all until they get some clear leadership.
Yeah, I hesitated while typing Ferrari there... It feels like a team with the biggest potential to get it sufficiently wrong that heads will roll.
That being said, Binotto has led their recovery over the last couple of seasons quite well. Maybe Ferrari need a calm, technicians hand on the tiller to stop them from self destructing?
I reckon at least one will have a sub-optimal concept that needs heavy revision through the season.
McLaren have gone in the opposite direction to everyone else so far on suspension layout. I have a feeling they're going to be the team that either look like geniuses or fools.
Rumour on ****ter over the weekend was that Aston are planning a virtually new car for mid-season. And Williams can't actually get their car to fit together at the minute.

Came third last season. Supplies engines to two other teams...I think we can say they're a "big" team.

I suspect that all the teams have a backup plan to do a massive update midyear if it turns out they've missed something big. Kinda makes sense to take a fairly basic car to the first test, see what everyone else has, then figure out updates from there.
And Williams can’t actually get their car to fit together at the minute.
Are you sure the algorithm hasn't been recommending news from a few years ago?
New Alfa spotted at Fiorano shakedown. Looks like another different sidepod interpretation and very different front wing shape, so much for the cars looking identical as initially feared!

so much for the cars looking identical as initially feared!
I hope it remains that way but I suspect that next year they will all look like whatever car turns out to be fastest this year.

Narrowly beating a bastardised car that had a different engine fitted into it than it was designed for. They won no races last season and have not won a championship since 2008 despite having a vast budget. They will be midfield at best once again this season, especially with the design changes.
Oh and here is some Ferrari news:
https://www.planetf1.com/news/ferrari-aerodynamic-doubt-2022-report/
Well, looks like Williams have done a Red Bull... 😒😒
This is quickly turning into an anticlimactic "launch season". I did read a great idea on Topgear, where launches should be held across 10 days, each team gets a set day in reverse championship order and the car you present has to be the car you take to the first test. Would be much more interesting than this "we've put a new livery on the showcar F1 gave us, but it's the new car really, honest" crap.
It really is tiresome - first test shakedown is next week - how many secrets can other teams pick up on between now and then!? Just show us the ruddy car!
But still managed 3? Fastest laps and 6? ( don’t quote me) podium finishes. Given how hard that is in F1 that puts them at the pointy end.
plus
most construction championships
most drivers
most wins
most pole
most fastest laps
yeah, pretty big

On the upside it means that we get 2 launches for each car - one where they show us the paint and talk bollox for an hour, then one where they try to get the actual car round the track fast enough to learn something but slow enough not to draw attention to whatever tricks they've found.
They won no races last season and have not won a championship since 2008
Vettel came close driving a very competitive car. (Alonso came close too, but the car was a dog.) Ferrari have first class facilities and engineers. They've struggled because of management problems. The management seems to have stabilized, they have two excellent drivers and a new engine. Hard to see them not being somewhere near the front. Even if they start off with a poor car, they have excellent wind tunnel and simulation facilities so they will be able to recover faster than the smaller teams.
On the upside it means that we get 2 launches for each car
I expect that whatever they turn up with for the first race won't be the same as the first test, so that's actually three launches.
