McLaren press conference today at 13.45 GMT with Brown and Siedl. Probably the Piastri announcement.

It'd be right funny if they announced one of their Indy drivers is moving to F1! 🤣🤣

Slight diversion from the drivers silly season onto engine supply.

Anyone got any interesting insights on the Porsche / Redbull tie up?

Seems to be dragging on a bit and saw something saying Porsche wanted to be more than an engine supplier but Red Bull wanted to control engine development which seems a bit difficult to resolve.

Only the rumours that it may not happen with Red Bull. Not sure why - if Dietrich Mateschitz wants out of F1 a clean break seems the sensible thing. As ever with F1 their will be vested interests in the background we know nothing about.

I can't see Porsche tying up with anyone else though, they need to hit the ground running with a leading and highly developed team.

But at the minute every team bar Ferrari, Alpine and McLaren seems to be 'up for sale' in some form or other! 🙂

Would be funny if Honda decided to do F1 again and strolled back into Red Bull waving at the Porsche team in the foyer

Anything stopping a Porsche Williams tie up?
Two names I like and seem an okay partnership

Nothing - apart from it's like going out to buy a Porsche and coming home with and Dacia Sandero! 🙂

It has been rumoured, but they'd basically be buying an F1 entry only and nothing more. They would need to invest millions just building the facilities up to Red Bull level.

They'd also have no engine and Porsche have said they don't have the facilities to build one. Hence why they wanted Red Bull Powertrains.

IMO if it isn't with Red Bull it won't happen.

Joe Saward has delved into the Porsche situation in his latest notebook - stuff you won't find on the f1 sites that just regurgitate press releases

RedBull have built up the team from scratch as an "independent" and look certain to have both 2022 championships.

The negotiating power is completely on their side, so why would they want to give half of that success to Porsche who could only be in for the short term marketing gain.

RedBull need a works engine supplier, but i'd imagine they have a number of interested parties (probably Honda) who may end up being a better fit.

I dont understand the reason for F1 to push for manufacturers to enter as well all know how fickle they are when success isnt achieved. We all remember the 2000's boom, and subsequent withdrawal of many a works team.
(Which is where RedBull emerged from the demise of Jaguar)

I wonder if they are dragging Piastri out of the simulator at Enstone as we speak or if he's with them till the end of the season?

Surprising thing is it was so clear cut, and Piastri had signed on 4th July. No doubt, no payout - he was basically a free agent. Major cock-up for Alpine and all the money they've invested in him is wasted.

How was he a free agent though? He was part of Alpine's academy I thought, surely they have a contracted option on all their juniors?

Because they dropped the ball and didn't check their contracts properly. From all I've read it seems they just assumed he was theirs, but their option on him had run out. And Mr Webber being the sharp guy he is, made sure his driver had somewhere to go for 2023.

They also assumed Alonso would roll over and take what he was offered too, what with him being an old duffer! 🙂

Great line-up slipped through their fingers and now they are left with mid-field mediocrity.

Engine manufacturing great
Owning the whole team has never ended well (apart from Mercedes)

Glad Piastri is going to McLaren as it did seem like Alpine were messing him about.
The pairing with Norris is going to be great to watch

And Ferrari. Merc don't own all of the Mercedes team, they are shareholders, but don't own the team outright. Back when McLaren were the works team, Merc were part owners. Worked well, until it didn't.

I can't see Ricciardo back at Alpha Tauri, there's no future. And it would be like going back to the start.

Seems they are rather keen on Colton Herta too.

There's only Williams that may offer some future progress.

Does he have a Superlicence? That's a rhetorical question, he doesn't and won't be able to earn enough points this year. The FIA would have to give him a special dispensation. Not going to happen.

Thing is his stock is already down, unless Williams or Haas has a major turnaround it's hard to see that it would help his cause driving for them.

If I were him I'd probably try to get an Indycar drive. Less bunse, but then again less travel and a chance he could score some wins.

No they didn't, they bought Jaguar and that started life as Stewart. They relied on engines from Renault then Honda and still are relying on Honda engines that are designed and built in Sakura.

Good point, 10 months ago they gave Red Bull the Driver's Championship, chucking a super licence their way is not going to bother them at all

They had Ferrari engines before switching to Renault.

Depends on their finances. I’d assume Ralf is bringing some funding with him, but I doubt Ricciardo would. Gene Haas is always after $$$.

Sadly I can’t see a sensible place for Ricciardo next season.

Perhaps a year or two in WEC Hypercars? Then see if there are any openings.

If Alpine release Piastri on Monday when they have the sit down meeting with him McLaren should be considering dropping Ricciardo with immediate effect and put him straight in the car. He couldn't do a worse job.

I imagine Mick brings cheap Ferrari engines with him being part of the Ferrari driver academy, which is due to end this year.

I'm excited for tomorrow. For the first time this season Hamilton has a genuine- albeit small- chance of a win. He's starting on the second row, and may well have the fastest car when it comes to race pace. Overtaking in Zandvoort is hard tho!

Dunno, he was in with a sniff at Silverstone. But yes, it looks like we might, just might, be in for some fun tomorrow—but on a track like that it’ll be down to strategy (got my popcorn ready for Ferrari’s weekly humdinger) or fireworks…

Bit of a Mick fan here, I hope that he finds a seat next year. Ricciardo deserves better than a Williams or a Haas, the only other potential seat is the Alpha Tauri assuming Gasly vacates. After eight years and as many race wins (seven of which were with Red Bull), going back to what was Toro Rosso would really suck.

Not based on this weekend so far - out qualified by 1 Williams and 2 Haas cars. Then there’s the gulf to his teammate.

You could say his head isn’t in the right place. But then the same would also be true for Mick who also needs to secure a seat
