They will all be throwing whatever they have at the current chassis as if they don’t the competition will and they’ll go backwards.
They're limited in what they're allowed to do. For Ferrari and Red Bull, their realistic goal is probably just to finish in the top three this year and next, then to be fully competitive in 2022. There is no way they will be able to catch Merc unless they can find a massive power increase for next year.

max crashstappen ! lol on a parade lap
that front left suspension looked well wobbly when he drove off !
that fezzer is a pile of rubbish
Albon answering his Critics?
they were not wrong about those softs!!! look at the state of lewis tyres after 3 laps!
they were not wrong about those softs!!! look at the state of lewis tyres after 3 laps
That was mostly tyre marbles and other track debris stuck to the tyre to add weight to the car
seems the ferrari "cheating" has made the merc unassailable!
verstappen's were completely smooth, and it looked like graining to me.
though the fact that hamilton pitted kind of shows the flaw in the lack of "team orders" at mercedes, the safest option for the win was not to pit (always has inherent risks) and trundle round on the warn mediums with the 25 second buffer for the final 4 laps of the race rather than risk the win with a pit stop.
But needed the fasted lap bonus point..if Bottas has finished 2nd and Hamilton didn't get fastest lap they'd be on equal points
exactly.... can't see it happening at ferrari or red bull. If you have a No 1 driver you don't risk his race win due to the performance of the No 2.
As a team it’s an extra point in the bag regardless of what Bottas does, so you go for it. The whole business is about taking risks for points, and let’s face it, a Merc pit stop is hardly a big risk unless it’s fancy dress.
Shame the rain didn’t arrive… plenty of fun in turns 1-3 as usual, but otherwise one of those races where I didn’t feel short-changed by the highlights.
So reading this, Ferrari seem to have done exactly what McLaren did - reorganize based on some silly management theory where everyone interferes in everyone else's business, find that it sucked, and then go back to basics to figure out what is wrong with the car. Having the weakest engine along with a crap chassis isn't helpful, either.

This is a fairly mind-blowing comment from Vettel:
“I think [Schumacher] is the best there ever was. I was hoping to take some championships away from Lewis so that Michael’s record stands a bit longer; now we are a bit out of striking distance to try and block him” (source)
So one of his key motivations is to try and prevent Hamilton beating Schumacher’s records? That’s a really, really bizarre psychology for a racing driver.
So it looks like the following could happen
Vettel off to Tracing Point/Aston Martin next year
Perez off to Alfa
Bye Bye Kimi 🙁
That’s a really, really bizarre psychology for a racing driver.
And people ask about comments against Vettel. Its exactly that kind of things thats turned me against him.
what other things like that has he said?
Didn't Kimi get a big stake in the alfa team as part of the deal to leave ferrari?
what other things like that has he said?
I suspect it’s not just quotes but other ‘things’ too.
TBH I find it hard to get past him crashing into Lewis on purpose in Baku.
But then what to do I know - I struggled to get past Schumacher deliberately crashing into Hill (successfully) and then Villeneuve (less so).
The Vettel hate here started long before Baku
It's also very important for Ferrari's marketing cachet if Schumacher's seven championship haul remains unmatched, after all they provided him with the machinery to win five of those WDCs and will forever be associated with him. There's some corporate pride at stake here, hence Vettel's comments.
It's also worth noting that Vettel is quite strident in his support for Hamilton's political activities, even taking a knee in support.
Would be a great shame to see a driver like Perez bounced into a Sauber in deference to Stroll, he deserves far better but then so did Esteban Ocon when he was turfed out.
McLaren add Gulf sponsorhip - only low key logo on engine bay at the minute but the Merch could be good!...
Saw that Gulf news and was hoping for a render of a Mclaren in pale blue with a papaya orange stripe.
...maybe next season thepurist! 🙂
US, Mexico and Brazil off 🙁
Nurburgring, Imola and Portimao in 🙂
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/53527355
You've got to wonder what other European grade 1 circuits are eyeing up potential October / November dates. So glad they are going back to Imola, its not the circuit it was, but its still a test for the drivers with some great elevation changes. Nurburgring is a little meh, but Portimao will be great given they have no real-world data to work with.
TBH they could do a European only world championship and I dont think I'd be dissapointed.
Is Turkey still a usable circuit?
Magny Cours?
*wishful thinking* 10-15 laps of Nordschleife. TBF I'd watch them do an ITT there...
Wow. Three Italian circuits. Ferrari must be crapping themselves.
The 24 hour Le Mans circuit?
Lewis to be the first and last driver to win the Italian triple crown. Vettel will hate that.
The 24 hour Le Mans circuit?
I reckon the Mercs winning margin would be measured in hours there, rather than seconds...
McLaren add Gulf sponsorhip
A bit of me wants this left well alone...It's an iconic colour scheme fo'shure, but these sort of "re-imaginings" always look a bit forced IMO...
If Imola is back on the calendar, can we have a GP at Brands Hatch?
Afraid not about Brands Hatch. Or Donington for that matter.
They are not on the list of Grade 1 status FIA circuits. Safety and facilities not up to scratch.
Knockhill is licenced to run in both directions - perfect for a double header!
Well that's one way to stop Tracing Point I guess....
Looks like The Hulk is being lined up as a replacement. Could he finally get a podium?
That is class
Hew much does Lewis pay for a helmet spray? 🙂
Hew much does Lewis pay for a helmet spray?
With his fame I doubt he has to pay any more. #NotAEuphemism
I'd love the hulk to come back, smash lance strolls time to bits and walk off with a podium. That's give stroll snr something to think about though I bet he'd still keep lance in the car.
Oh man. Isn't there a clause in Perez's contract that could see him released if he's not beating his team mate's points score by the end of July? Poor guy, he really doesn't deserve to lose his seat this way. Racing Point/Aston Martin will have a serious problem with credibility if they drop him for the owner's son next year.
Here's hoping that Perez's recovery is swift and that he's back in the car as soon as.
And Lando's race lid is absolute class. What a lovely thing to do.
And Lando’s race lid is absolute class. What a lovely thing to do.
This....so much better than all the those over designed things that look the same
I hope it's damp. Perez is poor in the wet, much worse than Stroll, and Hulk is pretty good.
If the Hulk can get his first podium after his career has effectively ended that would be a consolation.
Last I read last night is Perez tested +ve for Covid and The Hulk might get his seat instead for at least this race.
How can you not like Carlos Sainz!
Good to see Hulk in the Tracing Point, a podium for him would be amazing.
What would be ironic is if Hulk finally gets on the podium but then Renault (his former team) win their protest and his result is disqualified.
Yay!! Just realised that this race is live in full on Ch4! Whoopie do!!!!
What a lap! 3 tenths ahead of bottas. Pleased for norris and Russell as well.
Poor showing from vettel again.
ol' Horner thought they would be 0.3 in it on the softs LOL
Merc are really taking the p**s. They run around q1/2/3 engines turned to eco mode to keep everyone interested and probably give Tracing point strat mode to makie it look closer than it is. Quite frankly its begining to be a bore fest. The shining light is Norris squeezing every ounce of performance out of the car.
are the mercs using Das? gone strangely quiet

yeah over double that in the end to bottas let alone Hamilton!
Wonder how long they'll give albon the benefit of the doubt...
Merc are really taking the p**s.
this is a direct consequence of Ferrari's fuel flow shenanigans, mercedes had to push so hard to compete with and beat an illegal car It's now left them with an unassailable advantage.
Very impressive from Russell, a second quicker than his teammate in Q2. Vettel looked scrappy throughout; I know the car’s light on downforce and a bit of a handful, but even so… Huge difference between the Red Bulls as well; real shame for Albon, as he put in some top class overtakes last year and it’ll be a shame if he’s not able to bring that to the sharp end of a race.
5 place grid drop for russell
Merc are really taking the p**s.
Endlessly amusing that "high rake" is the golden ticket and the only team that don't follow that blueprint are going to win the constructors for the 7th time in a row.
But, but, HIGH RAKE!!!
But, but, HIGH RAKE!!!
One of the c4 commentators remarked during practice that Mercedes appear to be running a higher rake this weekend.
Still not as extreme as red bull, but headed in that direction.
Surely they can’t just crack up the rake? The rest of the aero must be altered to make it work well?
Surely they can’t just crack up the rake? The rest of the aero must be altered to make it work well?
Yep, it's an intrinsic part of the whole car design.
Mercedes may well be running higher rake, than normal, but this is relatively speaking.
The issue, I'd have thought, with high rake cars is that the aero under the car liable to be far more flaky than air through and over the top. I'm sure it works amazingly in the wind tunnel, but cranking it up on track with suspension movement, direction changes, etc, means that it may not have the drivers confidence. Any interruption in the flow could mean the whole floor losing down force - the higher the rake the bigger the potential gain but less room for error. A lot more detail to the fluid dynamics of it but remembering back to my mech eng days and how sensitive ground effect wings where compared to regular aerofoil wings!
Anyway, waffle over!
Endlessly amusing that “high rake” is the golden ticket and the only team that don’t follow that blueprint are going to win the constructors for the 7th time in a row.
I seem to remember a secret aerodynamicist article on the BBC website where they were saying that, apart from Merc, most of the other teams copied the high rake philosophy from red bull without really understanding it because they assumed if Adrian Newey was doing it it must be 'right'. Not really looking that way right now!
After all that, Nico Hulkenberg doesn’t even get to start! Lady Luck owes him big time!
Tyre carnage!
Well this is an unexpected finish
Lucky boy...
Bugger me!
Woah!
Squeaky bum time 🤪
I think LH has taken all Hulk's good luck.
Want to see how Ricciardo got past Norri S - I assume lando got stymied when sainz punctured?
Could LH have crossed the finish line in the pit lane? IIRC the pit entry to the finish line is much shorter than the actual track (to the point that in laps aren’t counted for the fastest lap) plus less risk as only one corner, not that it matters now, but still.
nerves of bloody steel to have his foot planted down the hangar straight.
Could LH have crossed the finish line in the pit lane?
Schumacher won the Britsh GP from the pit lane with the assistance of some very dodgy stewards in the late 90's.
Ferrari brought Schumacher in for a stop go penalty on the last lap but their pit box was after the line. The stewards were going to add 10 seconds to the time but mclaren protested because that's less than the 25 seconds a stop go should have cost and meant Schumacher still won.
Ferrari then escaped all penaltys on a technicality because the stewards took too long to reach a formal decision.
The stewards were sacked and I'm pretty sure that finishing the race in the pit lane is now classed as retirement as a result.
