*Scrolls through pics of Force India*
Oh no...they've done exactly the same to the other side, too.
Somehow, despite assurances to the contrary, we've ended up with cars which resemble a Dimetrodon with it's genitals dangling from the front of it's face.
That Force India has a stepped nose AND a penis AND a stupid fin.
This is a major, major balls-up for the sport. Imagine being a sponsor and having your brand associated with some of these cars? Unless you were selling some kind of Hollywood slash-film, then you'd be feeling pretty sick right now.
I do hope they let them put moar elements on the front wing for the 2018 season

this looks like they're carrying a sheet of MDF back from B&Q.
😆
the-muffin-man - MemberThe fat tyres bolted on to last seasons cars looked much better..
Yes I'm hoping that what we're seeing are just show tyres rather than the real deal.
Imagine being a sponsor and having your brand associated with some of these cars?
The good news is there will be plenty of advertising space available on that massive fin! 🙂
They just made the cars fatter so the tyres are more in proportion. I'm still not over Natalie Pinkhams shoes.. now thats aero for you
That's approaching the Caterham ant eater nose for goppingness, combined with over fancy aero from the 2008 era.
Hope Brawn can convince the teams that a different direction is needed, then the fia comes on board to revise the rules all the way down the various formulae so there's a consistent progression toward wherever f1 ends up. Oh and hope that liberty come up with an affordable (legal) non sky way of watching the racing that ensues.
I'm hoping Brawn will be involved enough with making the rules to insert a few loopholes only the very clever will spot (IIRC he managed to check the double diffuser was legal at some rules meeting without giving the game away).
Agreed, go ground effect and under body aero and calm down the over egged front and rear wings. Allow for a driver controlled drag reduction system ala f duct and heresy here but manual stick shift and clutch to make life harder in the cockpit.
Sauber hits the track - I'll admit it looks better in daylight...

F1 has quite literally missed the boat, I give it no more than 5 years.
The America's Cup however, is where the fast action highly accessible and well televised popular vote is going to go, they seem to have looked at how F1 has gone wrong and countered each area.
Info link for those who CBA to google
I'll wager fewer than 1% of F1's lost viewers will go to watch the Americas Cup. Apples:oranges.
America's Cup!
Nah - I'd much rather watch Hamilton's Mercedes boat, even if it's a sinking ship.
Looks like Merc are doing their launch in the right order -
12:10 360° Silver Arrow Unveil
14:40 Toto Wolff Q&A
15:45 #LH44 Q&A
16:25 Tech Briefing
18:30 #VB77 Q&A
Show us the car, then do all the PR spiel. Feel sorry for BOTTAS though - he'll be left talking to a handful of keen journos & a couple of cleaners, I bet the free biscuits will all be gone too (except the pink wafers).
ETA - That America's cup article - looks like they've realised that it wasn't working and so have decided that the way to make it better is to have a big change of the rules and make everyone build new boats, but one Team (NZ/Ferrari) don't want to play by the same rules as everyone else... totally different to F1 then.
Look out for Jim Bowen doing one of those celeb appearances in the back of the Force India garage...

Tidy!...
If the cars get any longer, the driver will need to be in a separate, articulated, cab.
Maybe they could fit a telly and a bed in it too so that the driver has something to do while the engineers drive it from the pits.
Oh good, the only section of the cars that aren't up to their balls in aero devices are the side pods 🙄 I really hope Brawn can bring some sense into this

For now... 🙄

+1
The only way forward I can see is a move to less aero (wing) reliant cars.
I'd personally like to see a limit on the number of front wing elements. It would be cheaper to design, more room for sponsor logos, more robust in minor collisions, and (I guess) would have the knock on effect of limiting the amount of aero trinkets on the rest of the car (no point have loads of rear downforce if the front is limited).
If the cars get any longer, the driver will need to be in a separate, articulated, cab.
wheelbase was always get longer with the wheel track spacing increase... as it's an important ratio for the turn stability. Though a lot of twitchy cars all arriving at the first corner might have been fun ! 😉
Why the stupid camera for the merc launch? What's wrong with a proper camera? It's all weird and twisted and not in a good way!
engineers wet dream
Yup, and this is just the launch car - ie the bits they dont mind the other teams seeing.
I'm pretty sure the wheelbase is the same as 2016.
Crikey that Merc looks slippery!

First image in the link... interviewing a bunch of guys sitting on stools. Yeah, totally countered 🙄
Golly, that Merc look sorted. Roll on the Red Bull and Torro Rosso launches.
Errrrrr!....

It really really isn't.
You've admitted to a wierd crush, and now everyone is looking at you in an odd way.
That needs an insta-ban and a 10 place grid penalty for both cars at every race of the season, just for being absolute tossers (probs still win the championship anyway)
I wonder what Mr Newey will come up with!

Or they've just stuck a lot of extraneous bits of plastic on to get the other guys panicking (please let this be the case)
Stick with yer dull as ditchwater procession of fugly cars going round in circles, fill yer boats, as it were.
Give it a go, what do you have to lose? Hit YouTube and watch a bit of AC racing, then cast your derogatory scornfull and fearful comments that it's less engaging and exciting than this too long in the tooth F1, that always promises and overhypes so much and persistently and reliably delivers less and less.
And I was once a confirmed petrolhead too.
Nostalgia eh? Still, at least some of you are exhibiting some self conscious emotions, even though it's a bitter sweet one of living in the past. 😉
You do realise that your wanting everyone to look for the Americas Cup Series and not the, once every two years, Americas Cup?
Also, the track is invisible and too far away to be watchable whilst making 30mph look good. I like sailing but it is not comparable. Then there's the issue of the weather been too good.....
Hit YouTube looking for F1 clips and it'll look bloody awesumz too
If only this type of [url=
racing could be introduced to F1, don't think F1 will have much longer, Bernie had his head in the sand too long but I hope that is disproved and Liberty can shake it up!
If you were certain type of team would you deliberatley put parts on the launch and test car that "just" break the rules to distract others.
I think the linked suspension and recent methods of temparerily lowering thr front suspension were a bigger gain than tiny aero parts. I may be wrong though.
So today we have an orange one and a red one. McLaren have even made the sign at MTC orange, so I think that ones pretty nailed on.
Oh and Merc have confirmed that they'll be evaluating a shark fin too, so don't get too excited about the T-wing.
@Moe, IIRC Buemi kinda walked off into the distance during that race while there were some entertaining scraps in the midfield. That'll be the Buemi who's won 3 races in a row now. Again, nothing like F1 at all.
Give it a go, blah blah blah, then cast your derogatory scornfull and fearful comments that it's less engaging and exciting than this too long in the tooth F1
No, still looking at you like you're an oddball.
Ferrari must have spent all their housekeeping budget on the car. Can we send them some lightbulbs??
Interesting that they've gone down the Honking big fin route whereas Mercedes has a smaller (more aero?) concept. Not sure about the T wing, I can see those being banned pretty quickly.
The wheelbase looks shorter than the others we've seen so far.

[s]Angular air intakes are interesting. Sharp features like that really stand out now when everything else is curved[/s]
Ignore, just seen it's the aero device in front of the actual pod
I'm actually a little surprised that there are not any sponsorship logos on those shark fins, especially as they look like big advertising hoardings. You would have thought that a team as cash-strapped as Sauber would have snapped up a chance like that! 🙂
They're probably expecting to have to remove the fin, or want to attract a new sponsor "look at this massive billboard we've bolted on"
I'm actually a little surprised that there are not any sponsorship logos on those shark fins,
It's probably because the fin won't be there for every race. They may not need it on certain circuits.
I'm actually a little surprised that there are not any sponsorship logos on those shark fins
There are so few sponsors on the back-of-the-grid teams (and even the ones at the front TBH) that its not suprising really. Quite looking forward to the Mclaren launch now.

So what does it do then? I've seen surprisingly little chat about it JA on F1 etc....
WHat the heck is going on with the wing mirrors on the Merc and Ferrari, they look stupid. In fact the cars look awful so far, that Merc looks like someone put it partly into a shredder before dragging it back out again. Seems like a step backwards, with all this silly aero crap everywhere.
So what does it do then?
Smooths and conditions airflow to the rear wing apparently. But I'm no expert!

Arent the mirrors pretty much just an aero device - given how low the drivers sit, and how stiffly the cars are set-up I cant imagine you can see much through them.
Scarbs is your man for F1 tech...
Nice one thanks! 🙂
its a mclaren in a manor / virgin livery
"everyone here is a mclaren fan, if not please leave" que bloke leaving behind the speaker 🙂
Jesus, Mclaren have just wheeled out a 2007 spyker.
Thats the only time this mclaren will look good! ^^^^
(just seen the pics on autosport) #vomit
tried to get Alonso to describe it as "sexy" he seemed reluctant 🙂 the best he could come up with was it was nice to have some mclaren colours. Looks like the colour scheme was done in a 2D side view, sent off to the paint shop, bit like in old style games where we only had projection mapping and no unwrapper everything looks a bit wonky and badly stretched.
That is a shocking paint job on that McLaren.
They need to flip the colours on the front wing, painting all the complicated bits orange just makes it look busy. Also, throw a sheet over the rest of it so we dont have to look at it 😆
Rather sad when a team like McLaren have as many sponsors as Sauber. So many blank spaces.
Was going to suggest Orange Arrows, but that one above is a closer match.
I hope I'm wrong, but it looks underdeveloped compared to the Merc and Ferrari. I really want to see McLaren back at the pointy end of the grid.
For me the classic McLaren colours will always be the red and white, but I guess they are making a point about having a clear break from the Ron Dennis era! 🙂
Going out on a limb here....but i quite like the new McLaren colours!
Awaits for the abuse to be thrown this way....
It's a bit half arsed. I think it should be totally orange. The black doesn't really do anything for me.
For me the classic McLaren colours will always be the red and white
Not actually McLaren colours though are they? ..... more like Marlboro?
Correct - but Marlboro was a sponsor all through their heyday, so it's natural that's what they are associated with.
As already pointed out, I don't have a problem with Orange for McLaren - it's just the way they've done it two tone with the black is a bit of a mess.

Agree - and it's not even the right orange.
Maybe they've left the black bits for the sponsor logos. So could've been all orange then.
and it's not even the right orange.
Really? That's the best you can come up with? That it's not quite same shade of a colour that a racing team last used about 50 years ago? I'm sure they're going to be devastated by your razor-like insight into marketing and colour palette choice.
