Agree it was a good race. I thought Vetel was a bit lucky that Occon took to the off track area during the battle or it could have easily ended in tears.
Just reading about Kubica's test, it passed me by last week. I think he surprised a lot of people, I know he has a lot of good will in F1 but even still I doubt Renualt F1 would have given him an F1 for the day for old times sake.
I wouldn't be surprised if he was a 3rd driver for them next year, if only to see if he's got a season in him. Given the engineering and design genius in F1 I'm sure they could modify the car to over come his injury if he can still do the biz.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him at Renault this year I'd Palmer doesn't pull his finger out. Given he's scoring no points while Hulk is, there's no real risk in putting Kubica in the car for a race...
Especially now Monaco has passed. Thee are doubts he has the range of movement to get around the Loews hairpin.
Vettel complaing that Alonso appears to be taking a bus tour of Baku 😆
Monisha's gone
Wonder if they'll sign 3 people to replace her?
Anyone just hear the Jolyon BBC interview that was just on R5 live? 😆
Anyone just hear the Jolyon BBC interview that was just on R5 live?
No, did he say what plans he's got for the rest of the year? 😀
Ha, and over a second behind his team mate in that session. Wonder if that's the reporters fault too? 😆
I do feel a bit sorry for Palmer, he's under a great deal of pressure and it's pulled him into a vicious cycle of poor performances. He can't be in a terribly good place right now.
All F1 drivers are under pressure - some cope, some don't.
Palmer doesn't seem to have the speed either - he's not really a rookie anymore and had to have 4 goes at GP2 to win the title.
Oops, and Joly's just binned it,
wonder if it's too late to get Kubica in for the race 🙂
wonder if it's too late to get Kubica in for the race
Alonso may be looking for something to drive.
Mclaren losing 3 seconds on the straight 😯
VER just binned it at turn 1, sounds like gearbox is done for
Alonso is a very respectable 12th place. You can't help but wonder just how quick he'd be without a lawnmower engine behind him, farting it's way around the circuit.
Ah, just seen that Alonso's engine farted it's last and died again.
Palmer can moan all he wants but he is simply crap; slow, crashes a lot and bad at PR. Little better than his dad.
Dragon - glad I'm not alone in thinking he's keeping the family legacy going.
I see the McHonda relationship goes from bad to worse. I was once a believer that it was only a matter of time until Honda got it sorted and delivered a Merc beater, but that's long gone now.
Also seems that Liberty are stuck with Sky until 2025, so I really hope there's another way to watch races otherwise F1 is going to struggle even more in the UK.

Boulier said it was actually a gearbox failure. Looked like an engine failure but I guess it could have been gearbox oil leaking on something hot.
Looks like Baku is delivering the same as last year in the support races.... 😯
I've got relatively high hopes. Last year's race had potential for some decent racing, but ended up a procession, whether it's a wider cars or what, but they're all struggling to stay on the track, could make for some mistakes under pressure and some overtakes!
Slow clap for Jolyon, not convinced he'll still be employed for the race!
Lewis playing silly buggers in practise. 😀
I would imagine Renault will blame Jolyon for the car catching fire....after all, Hulkenberg's didn't 😀
Good quali from stroll
Hamilton 1.2 seconds faster than Vettel - that's going to smart a bit. Especially as Merc where nowhere near on Friday.
Hamilton 1.2 seconds faster than Vettel - that's going to smart a bit.
old engine with some miles on it so I guess they don't want to stress it too much so it can make the race distance.
It's odd that they rag the tyres in q2 the mercs easily made q3 but insisted on taking life out of the tyres they would be starting on 😕

The C4 guys suggested there had been an engine change for Vettel prior to qualifying (not sure exactly when) and perhaps that he hadn't had a chance to reassess the aero/suspension settings with the new engine? (theoretically identical I know)
It's apparently not only an old engine, but also an older spec engine, so less power even if they hadn't turned it down.
that Baku circuit must put a lot of strain on the engines, long high speed sections to get the engines all hot and bothered followed by very slow sections with little cooling.
All is now clear.
Vettel, who starts the race 12 points ahead of Hamilton in the championship, salvaged a decent position in fourth after a difficult day.He lost most of final practice because of a hydraulics problem and Ferrari had to do a last-minute engine change before qualifying.
Ferrari fitted an old-specification engine, the first one he used this season, which has less power than the newer engine he was meant to use, and Vettel was never close to the Mercedes pace.
Oh, this is exciting. Safety car out, safety car back in. No, it's out again. Back in, no out again.
Vettel getting so punchy!
Looking fascinating for what I thought was going to be a procession.
As above - was expecting this to be a boring one.. Can't believe Vettel just drove into Hamilton like that! Gotta be a nailed on penalty for Vettel?!
Got to be
Probably just a reprimand I reckon. The big question is whether alonso will get a point....
The Ferrari and Force India teams did well getting those cars back out! Well played.
The big question is whether alonso will get a point.
At this rate, he's likely to end up on the podium.
It just gets better... 😯
I'm actually setting the highlights to record - first time I've bothered with that this season
"when did I do dangerous driving?"
Ermmm
What did he do? I must have missed it when I was weed killing the patio.
Nerfed the back of Hamilton thinking he'd accelerated when he hadn't, then drove into the side of him because he was frustrated he'd hit him. What's German for petulant?
I don't think a 10 sec penalty was enough for that
What's German for petulant?
gereizt
Wooooooo!!!!!
deliberately ramming another car under the safety car = 10 sec stop and go. Only for ferrari
also why wasn't Raikkonen not black flagged earlier clear shots of him dragging barge boards and shedding carbon around the track.
Agree, Klunk
All made for a genuinely exciting race

Because Ferrari are made in Hebden Bridge [/tinfoilhat]

yes but sport is only valid with a level playing field. Lance was fab to watch but how do you feel now ? It was also "funny" that it was announced after lewis had to stop for a new cockpit surround.
Ferrari International Assistance strikes again.
Though it was dangerous. Just comical timing in the context of the 10s penalty
instantly thrown out of any pro cycling race for similar behavior.
IMHO Vettel deserved a black flag today and a one race ban.
And FIA say data from Ham's car show he didn't brake test...did exactly as he had done previously. So Vettel is a knob.
I don't know if the "authorities" can implement further sanctions, but I think he should lose his points from this race. It was a childish road-rage move that sets such a bad example.
they very least his sanction should be is worse than the person he just hit whoever the driver.

Although Hamilton did say he had slowed at that point and Vettel should have expected it.
Tensions running high.

I suppose it would have been if Hamilton's headrest hadn't come loose
Although Hamilton did say he had slowed at that point
Not the same as braking...and he'd done exactly the same thing at previous restart. Data also shows that Vettel did deliberately turn in (despite Coulthard trying to claim it was just a result of his handwaving)
Stroll 😯
despite Coulthard trying to claim it was just a result of his handwaving
The wife, who never usually watches this stuff, happened to catch it when it happened and couldn't believe the lack of criticism from the commentators shes was genuinely shocked.

I don't think we need the data to see that 😆
...couldn't believe the lack of criticism from the commentators...
You must have been watching C4 then, as Brundle on Sky was very vocal about that.
To the point where he made the comparison with Vettel and Maldonado; which will smart if Vettel hears it.
Can they give him a further penalty after the race? Or is the penalty in the race considered final?
Sainz had a grid place penalty from Canada for admittedly a big accident, but it wasn't a malicious move like Vettels.
Anyway cracking race - real shame that a basic thing like a headrest cost Lewis so badly.
Great race that 😀
As for Vettel, he should get a proper bollocking for that stunt! 1 race ban, not a 10 sec stop and go with 3 points on his license. Merc/Hamilton should appeal that decision.
To be fair, Vettel shouldn't have done that but it didn't affect anyone else's race (though it could have done).
vettel would have to have a "little chat" in the back of a panda for that,
"i didn't do anything",
"well sir....lets just look at this video i took"
I heard Hamilton is part of one of those insurance scam gangs. He'll be claiming against Vettel for whiplash next (when we all know he wasn't using his safety equipment properly.
Do I need a wink?
Just watched this on catch up.
I'm staggered about Vettels penalty. He deliberately DROVE INTO another car!
It does not get any worse. A Ten second stop go is a total joke. He ran into the back of someone, and then deliberatly hit them.
Cant ever remember seeing anything as bad as that in 30 years of watching F1.
I think Maldonado drive into someone on purpose at spa ( I think it was spa )
what a drive by Bottas from the back and a lap down. All the way to the wire. Makes Hamilton's grasping at straws comment all the more irrelevant.
How about McHondas first points. Its been on the cards for a while and quite good despite a grid staring point of Monaco if you count back the number of places. Best race of the season so far.
Got to feel for Verstappen, Ice Man and Massa
Not quite the same, but...
The Renault Formula One crash controversy, dubbed Crashgate by some in the media, is a sporting scandal perpetrated by the Renault F1 team who ordered Nelson Piquet Jr. to crash deliberately during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, to gain a sporting advantage for his Renault team-mate Fernando Alonso.
"Cant ever remember seeing anything as bad as that in 30 years of watching F1."
see igm's post above and that white haired ****t hugging Alonso at the start.
What LH did or didn't do is irrelevant, Vettal side swiped him.
Should have been black flagged, straight to the naughty step, do not collect £200.
But hey he was in a red car, Mr Todd likes red cars.
Vettel proven to be completely wrong...
https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/f1-hamilton-vettel-baku-brake-testing-923425/
...he screwed up - a massive apology needed.
"Deliberately driving into another driver and getting away pretty much scot-free as he still came fourth, I think that's a disgrace. I think he disgraced himself today," Hamilton said.
"Imagine all the young kids that are watching Formula 1 today and see that kind of behaviour from a four-time world champion. I think that says it all.
"If he wants to prove that he's a man, I think we should do it out of the car face-to-face."
Whatever you think of Hamilton, he has a point.
What - a playground challenge to a fight? the man is a dick.
It sounds bad but I am not sure Hamilton quite meant that. Or he did but by doing so was highlighting the ridiculousness of vettel's "we are men" comment. Hamilton looked a bit uneasy after saying it, probably realising what he said and how it sounded. I am giving him the benefit of doubt anyway.
