Evolved from base jumping. Its been around a while. Certainly nuts, I admit when I first saw the films a few years ago I thought they where spoofs. There are a few crash films including fatal ones if that's your thing. There is an offshoot of the wing suit jumping which they do without parachutes, everyone who's done that has died eventually even if they do land successfully on prior jumps. I've seen the Red Bull jetpack guy do a flight over Verbier, drops out of a helicopter then fires the jetpack before parachuting to earth.

That list of deaths (25 or so, from 2013) at the end makes for pretty grim reading.
