No air conditioning on my bike to and from work today. Survived, but then I can't brag about how hot it was here, being on coast it was a a degree or so less hot than further inland according to the weather forecast. Don't carry a thermometer around with me to say for sure what temperature it was. Hot enough to try water from the cooler. Conclusion: not a good idea to drink something so cold when it's so hot. Tap water fine. #life-on-the-edge

Had a wee swim in Loch Morlich after tonights warm run. The water temperature was 20.7C Not much different from winter, just the decimal point in the wrong place 🙂

I did think Ted Cruz would be mentioned before Greg Abbott tho.

It was a toss up. Abbott gets it for the state laws!

Where in TX are you? It always felt hotter in Houston for me. But I quite the heat knowing that I can go and get a bit cooler in a building.

It's been a while since I did much in the UK. Do places like supermarkets and restaurants have AC?

Somafunk,

Thank you for responding I can’t really disagree with pretty much all of that, its when you see a bold statement and no context I’m curious as to what lies behind it. Unfortunately I see some of the same items encroaching into UK politics and life.

My situation here is hardly ideal but I’m stuck here for a bit and I too suffer from some of the things you list. That said it’s too common that people see these values and project them onto all Americans/Texans (I’m not suggesting you do by the way) when it’s fantastic people from here that have helped me through a very difficult time.

I’ll leave there - let’s back to how hot it is.

Proper first world inconvenience here, just back in from taking dog for a short walk now it’s down to about 24 degrees. Go to make a cold drink and the ice machine is empty 🙄. That’s never happened before, bloody teenagers !

It's still 29c here in Ely, at nearly 10pm! Thinking of sleeping on hammock in garden.
At least its dry heat. I can't remember dry heat in this country before?

you want more?

the climate. you forgot to mention the hideous climate.

i lived in houston for a couple of years. it really isn’t a very pleasant place. it made me realize that all the concerns that Europeans have for reducing co2 emissions is utterly pointless when places like texas exist.

My flat was not air-conditioned and I would just melt if riding the bike (flashbacks to a week-long camping tour called GOBA where I thought I’d never pee again).

Yeah, did a 5 day race a few years ago, 7 or 8 days staying in the same hotel, unairconditioned rooms (organisers saving money) coldest it got for the entire stay was about 26/27 degrees.
By about day 3 all the sheets were stained yellow with sweat, not to mention that we were getting though about 8-10 litres per stage and the same again in the evening/night/before breakfast.

Think i peed about once a day, after drinking a litre of water with breakfast.

Nearly one in the morning. Still over 26 outside at the moment. Toddler has just woken up and puked her guts out all over the kitchen floor, hopefully heat related (really don’t want it to be a tummy bug in this heat). Not looking forward to tomorrow at all.

10 - I’m in Austin. I think it’s generally a bit less humid here than Houston so the feels like temperature for a given air temp might not be so bad. Houston is a massive sprawl of a city too - I’m not a fan of Houston.

Love Austin. Who cares how hot it gets when you have Barton Springs!!!

5 degrees when I started my ride this morning. Mates had arm warmers on 🤣

Just got up for work after virtually no decent sleep and the flat hasn't dropped below 26 degrees, even with the windows open from 1am. Brushed my teeth in lukewarm water as the cold tap is no longer cold. Feel like crap despite drinking lots of water throughout the night but still don't need to pee. Probably shouldn't be going to work but I'll see how I feel when I get there.

I'm really not built for heat at the best of times, let alone when it's like this!

Have another hour to go before I finish my night shift and not looking forward to trying to get some sleep. Hopefully I can get at least five hours, might have to be cider induced though.

Not looking forward to work today, we ferment bacteria in 1400 litre vessels, which means we heat the media up to 125 Deg C, which means lots of steam. Plus we've got a contractor in trialling new equipment, which means even more steam!!

Yesterday was bad enough, felt my brain physically melt. 🤯🥵🥵

Just done 5km round the block- glorious at 6am in rural Wiltshire. Could feel the residual heat coming off the tarmac lanes, and the temp increase in the half hour I was out is huge- feels like midday already (24ish here at the moment).

Assuming it will be warmer than yesterday due to the warm night, but interested to see if we get the forecast thunder later!

Started at 23 deg today as opposed to 18 at the same time yesterday outside

It’s just rained so humidity is up at 70% as opposed to 30 yesterday

At least it’s cloudy at the min but if that burns off….

Not too bad here in Surrey, I slept OK. Although it's hot I think the dry heat makes a difference compared to our usual humidity, much more comfortable even for the extra few degrees.

On my commute yesterday morning and then late afternoon, I barely broke a sweat..... clearly not true, riding at normal speed in 35+ heat, but I think it was evaporating and blowing away as fast as i was sweating, so I never really noticed it. Still, I normally get all my fluid intake from tea and coffee and in addition to a normal intake yesterday I also drank about 2 litres of water. And yet this morning my wee was dark yellow, clearly dehydrated. I can easily see how dehydration and overheating / heatstroke can happen when it's like this.

dry heat makes a difference

Oh heck yes.

My limited experience of holidaying in circa 40 deg fully humid heat has been that yesterday was a piece of cake by comparison. In the humidity, sweat doesn't work. So you dehydrate in about five minutes.

Peaked yesterday in the garden (shade) at 37.2 deg C. Went for a run this morning at 6am and it was still 23. Currently working from home not the air conditioned office, but keeping an eye on inside vs outside temp and will shut the windows soon.

I wonder if any of theblowhard "it's only a weather forecast, it'll be wrong" gobshites will come back and apologise for their ignorance.

What we've seen is a forecast of extraordinary, never-seen-before heat, that was basically perfect on a one-week lead time or more.

Last night was sublime. Mates came round once the direct sun was off the decking and we lounged in the pool for hours with beers and tunes, and sat with the heat radiating from the tall brick walls until late. Really felt like being on holiday.

"low probability" could be a bit misleading there, there is no probability at all attached to the forecast, it was a single deterministic "best estimate" simulation, over a time scale that it's not really considered reliable or usable for official forecasts.

Ie, this map wasn't particularly forecast with any probability at all, just suggested as a possibility. And as you can see from the pic, it was a few days wrong with the timing (Sat 16th 1800h), though basically correct with the magnitude of the event.

The mention of "almost routine" is also dubious. How often have they predicted highs but been wrong.
After all the express promises snowmageddon every year and occasionally gets it right for a day or two.

Arrived in Whitby yesterday for a short break and after the obligatory fish and chips we walked out onto the breakwater. When we walked onto the breakwater extension the temperature seemed to drop by about 10C and was very pleasant. Definitely heading back today but after getting some tree shade in Dalby.

Sainlogic Professional WLAN Weather Station

It's a rebranded Fine Offset, but they all are.
https://cpc.farnell.com/pro-signal/psg04173/weather-station-wifi/dp/IN08375

Sits on a big pole (Screwfix) in the garden.
Base station communicates with the Wifi router and uploads every few minutes to Wunderground and the MetOffice (WOW) Weather Observations Website.

For years I ran a Maplins USB Pro weather station via a Raspberry Pi but this is far more reliable.

The Express lies routinely. Anyone who reads that crap deserves what they get, but it’s the Express to blame, not proper weather forecasters such as the met office.

it was 14 deg when I started at 6, couple of hours later it was 21 and the sweat had already got too much for my Halo headband.

I don't do well with heat, so quite glad I'm not south.

interesting, thought about building a Pi-based one for ages (no real reason, just as a project!) but if there's an off-the-shelf which is better & not mega-bucks, that's the favourite option!
Do you actually do anything with yours or is it just for fun/interest? Does anyone give you any kind of credit/reward for uploading data?

Nope! They got the weather forecast spot on for once - in fact, it was a bit hotter in the Derbyshire Dales than they initially predicted. That aside it was an absolutely glorious day. Glad I could enjoy it, rather than sitting inside with sheets covering the windows.

For all my shit that I spout, I do genuinely hope everyone's elderly relatives were ok though

Didn't drop below 24 upstairs last night.
Kitchen was a couple of degrees cooler.
Slept well though, did 20 miles on the e-Bike mid evening, stopped for a couple of beers just before the last couple of miles home and then watched Movies and eat Magnums until 12.

I feed the weather onto Weather Underground and WOW.
Just for fun - and also because I find it fascinating.

Local differences are interesting too.
During the winter, if we get an inversion, I get far lower temperatures than stations just a few miles away and higher up (I am almost beside the River Forth at 15m). I can be at -9C and they will be at 6C. That's in 2 miles!
Rainfall is another interesting one: you wake up, look out the weather and go, "huh, it's rained". I know how much and when. #geek

https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/ISTIRLIN11

https://wow.metoffice.gov.uk/observations/details/?site_id=82b840ba-0891-e911-80e7-0003ff59883f&fbclid=IwAR0lsdBqpCgQPJH1ZUUTlvPEsn5c_lfzb0jMshzIF88fOBdhUN7_9Xa1NzI

Raspberry Pi.
It can be done but it is hard work.
None of the instruction sites are 100% correct.
Then MrsSC would unplug the Pi to vacuum. It was amusing to get a notification from California to notify me that she was vacuuming for the first time in months, but the station would need restarted, which was a faff.
Then the SD card would corrupt every few months and you'd be back to the start.

it was weird last night taking the dog out over the nearby field. on the lumpy bits it was fairly normal temp, but in the meadow it was significantly cooler. like when there's a lying mist, but with no mist.

Kind of like this weird inversion thing going on a couple of weeks back. It was about 25 degrees in the shade and rising, yet the pollution from that cruise ship wasnt rising !

there was a report somewhere in the news that higher up, like aviemore, would be more roasty due to the cloudless inversion.

As I was going home last night, it was horribly oppressively hot, the temp gauge on the car was saying 37 as I passed someone who was out for a run.

Why in the name of god would anyone do that? I was tempted to mountt the pavement and run him over for his own benefit and the good of all humanity. That would class as a mercy killing, wouldn't it? Just saving Darwin a job and keeping the gene pool cleansed

I once ran the Safaricom Marathon in Kenya. The weather in the Kenyan Highlands was parched, bone dry, with a beating sun! Training in this current heat would have been very useful, if only for short periods, and might have saved some of the odd looks I got from training on warm, sunny days while wearing unnecessary clothing. 😀

I think some 'elite' Strava runners/cyclist do it to show how awesome they are. The local triathlete clubs has a few 'elite tits' in it. Strangely this are the ones still posting about their awesome runs/rides in 38 deg heat.

Sensible people either dont bother or go out very early in the morning.

I would love it if we got weather like this for a couple of months every summer. West of Scotland at around 28-30C not south of England temps.

Lovely weather for being outdoors in the morning and evening. Fit aircon to keep the house a bit cooler and job done.

It's going to be more scorchio ooop North on the Eastern side, than down south today, weird.

It was 35o in my attic workroom yesterday morning. (Not worked for 2 days now).
It was 35o in the shade late afternoon yesterday.
It's now 37o in the shade. We live on the Derbyshire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester border.
This mornings 15 mile tandem ride was ok, until about 8.00 am. even descending at speed gave no respite.

Please put shallow bowls of water out for the wildlife at night. Reports of many hedgehogs dying from dehydration.

Balls

WFH at the patio table has been nice

Kids now coming home from school early after lunch and I've got a zoom meeting at 1, so no more sitting round in my underpants
