Swim in the Thames with the dog this evening. Will be the same tomorrow to cool down. Loft office may peak at or about 40 so I may have to decamp to the cooler North facing dining room. We have a sun awning and it keeps the back of the house noticeably cooler. Blinds at the front (south) have been closed all day. Dog chilling earlier.

On top of that my 2 tear old grandson is liable to have seizures on hot days, particularly if he has even a hint of an infection in his throat or something. He had one about a week ago.
His mum is really worried and I've took away her main support in the shape of my son. Hes standing in for my sister looking after my old mum whilst I'm in hospital as my sister has the emotional fortitude of a chocolate teapot.

Along with many other businesses, we've cancelled all work at customer sites within the 'Red Weather' area. We are also encouraging staff to work where is coolest and convenient - home or office. Just as we do when it snows / gales / rain and there's Red Weather warnings.
While I too feel there's an air of "Don't panic, Captain Maintaining!", the next 48hrs will see deaths occur among our vulnerable people.

No they don't. There isn't a single holiday destination that sees temps regularly reach 40C. Average July / August temperatures in Canaries, Balearics or Greek Islands are 28-30C. Guess how the local would describe 40C - a heatwave.

I lived in Australia in the 1980's, it was drummed into everyone in school the dangers of extreme heat, 35C was pretty common in Sydney but days over 40C were rare but I experienced a few. Really hot days involved staying indoors and moving as little as possible, sometimes we just used to lie on the tiled floor in the kitchen which was the coolest room.
The School uniform was shorts, short sleeves shirt and crucially, a cap. The cap was pretty much a life saver, we used to wet them at break time before we went out in the sun, but if it was over 35C there was a large shaded courtyard we used at breaks instead.
Slip , Slap, Slop was a national slogan. We were taught how to recognise heatstroke and what to do to treat it. No one ignored the dangers. Yes Australia absolutely has temperatures comparable to this heatwave but in a culture educated to deal with it.

I've done quite a bit of work with heating and BMS systems before and remember once in student accomodation we had valves fitted to control the radiator in each bedroom, anyway the students soon figured out that you could just break the cover open and remove the batteries that powered the communication link and the defaulted the valve to fully open instead of closed. The chinese students in particular liked the heating on for around 11 months of the year as it was hotter where they came from.
well we're working in incinerators, doing heat stress assessment and confined space work in fuel storage systems, always a laugh in full fire proofs and SCBA.
More breaks, electrolytes and crack on really, its no where near as bad as doing similar works in the middle east or places where the RH is nearly 100%.

Manchester here. Seems its going to max-out at 36degrees today and tomorrow. I ran my hill-repeats today at 7am before work rather than later on at 5pm, though I would potentially have done them at 5pm if I hadn't had any choice.
For me personally I don't think anything else will change in my routine, will be back to normal temperatures on Thursday but I am quite lucky that the back of our house in the extension is generally very cool (though not so lucky with the heating bill in winter).

This is my approach as well.
They've relaxed the dress code so smart shorts are acceptable as well so I'm quite happy here. A drive in an air conditioned car to an air conditioned office means it could be much worse.

Currently sat in the greenhouse - aka conservatory. Should be OK until early afternoon when the sun hit's it. We've got the awning out to part shade it, and a pop-up gazebo to reduce some of the direct sun. I'm in the office tomorrow, but will most likely ride in. Not air conditioned, but has some fancy bore hole pumped water heat/cooling system, so stays pretty constant temperature.

Have an 8000 BTU Aircon unit on full blast in the living room - managing quite well to keep our open plan downstairs to below 25C at the moment. The area is well outside it's spec, so its only going to take the edge of the heat - not enough capacity to significantly chill the entire floor.
Only just passed 30 here in Shropshire, but we are approx at 600ft.
