Anyone just have an simple extractor fan instead of a extractor hood in the kitchen?

Hoods range from £80+ (typocally £100 - £250 for a good looker)but as we are planning to pump the air outside i don't see the point of passing it through a filter before hand.

Can a £30 kitchen extractor fan do the trick?

Sorry for the domestic question.

yes, Im working on some new build flats that are just using a humidity controlled extractor fan inplace of a proper cooker hood.

advantage of the hood is it sucks the niffy/steamy air from directly over the hob so it doesn't circulate around the room first.

On max very little steam from boiling pans gets past our extractor hood.

oh, and if it's being used to pump air outside you don't need the filters inside - our AEG hood only has a basic mesh one that catches the fat.

Another reason i as is we have a wide 80cm 5 burner and there is not 80cm free directly above so the hood would be off to one side. that would look rubbish.

Its a tiny galley so also hoping to save some space too by putting in a fan in then a shelf/unit above/next to it.

But at the end of the day the very most important thing is that the cooking smells/moisture is extracted.

Thanks for the replys.

I would have thought it would get greasy pretty quick and, unlike a hood, be far more difficult to get clean.

If you must use a fan, I'd stick it a bit further away and concentrate on using it to extract moisture.
