Hi
Wondering if the STW hive-mind could assist with a house related query.
Our property was built in 1906, and the first floor has a coarse render coating - was painted white by previous owner. It’s now showing areas of hairline cracking, external only and not deep, which we would like to get repaired and redecorated.
I’ve spoken to a couple of local operators sourced from Rated People:
One is a decorating company, which intends to use a French water based product called ‘Gori’.
The other contractor proposed to use one of Wethertex, Andura or Plaspertex.
Both offer 15 year guarantees, but neither are insurance backed which concerns me as 15 years is a long time for a company to remain in operation.
Question to the Forum - has anyone done render repairs and what solution did you utilise? And has anyone ever used the types of solutions proposed - they both sound like a good idea on paper, but so hard to gauge in reality!
Thanks in advance for your time.
Hi,
I'm interested to hear about this too as we have a similar problem with paint peeling off too.
Not knowing what sort of company does this sort of job has put me off though. You mentioned one company is a decorators is that the same for both or is the other a specific external render company?

I've used this before, I ground out the crack with an angle grinder to make it bigger, then filled and sanded. You can't tell it's been repaired when it's painted.
Used this before with good results. Can do it yourself

Decorator here, only used wethertex from that list but heard good things about andura paints. Wethertex is a very good paint in my experience though.
I also repair cracks in render as described above using toupret fillers. If roughcast render then sponging or stippling out the repair to try to blend it in.
Any job or paint is only as good as the preparation though so I'd expect a full clean/jetwash of any previous coatings and bleach/fungicidal wash at least.
I'd also consider mixing owatrol eb into the first coat.
I'm not sure this is applicaple to yours but in my 1930's property the wall ties had rusted and expanded causing the render to crack. Needed to get them replaced
