Hi

Wondering if the STW hive-mind could assist with a house related query.

Our property was built in 1906, and the first floor has a coarse render coating - was painted white by previous owner. It’s now showing areas of hairline cracking, external only and not deep, which we would like to get repaired and redecorated.

I’ve spoken to a couple of local operators sourced from Rated People:

One is a decorating company which is suggesting that they will use gori, a French product that is not used much in the UK but they believe is the best product to use.

The other is an external repair/redecoration company using a spray on solution using Weathertex/ Andura/Plaspertex.

Both offer 15 year guarantees, but neither are insurance backed which concerns me as 15 years is a long time for a company to remain in operation.

Question to the Forum - has anyone done render repairs and what solution did you utilise? And has anyone ever used these proposed solutions?

Thanks in advance for your time.

If there are surface cracks then the worry is that water has got behind the render - have you given it a tap to see if it sounds hollow?

I had traditional render that was deteriorating and got a bloke through Rated who used some bonding, fibre glass mesh and a silica finish. The original quote was about £52 psm last Christmas but the price went up a bit due to the extra work needed in some areas. It's improved the insulation in terms of heating and sound and it looks great, probably helped me sell the place (that wasn't the plan at the time).
