I've had a enquiry to build a model for a museum in Malaysia. Its going to be fairly big and heavy. Likely to made from several sheets of 8x4 timber, although they will stack for transit. It'll need to travel safely and there will be some electronics in there too. Anyone know how this works? Some kind of small container or take it too a shipping co to put in a big container? Likely costs? I've freighted smaller stuff before on pallets but this is a step up. Also what about the tax and duty implications. I'll pay my income tax here in the UK on any payment, are import duties the buyers problem?

Good chance a museum is used to doing this sort of thing. I would be tempted to see if they would be willing to take care of the shipping themselves. Obviously shipping is built into the price anyway, so if they take care of it all it could be left off and it's all their problem.

This is a common way of doing things where I work, another option is you shipping to an agent of theirs within the UK.

When it comes to actually helping you do the shipping, I'm way out of my depth!

Thanks. Unfortunately that was my first suggestion to them and I gave a price based on them handling the shipping and all associated complications. They have now got back to me asking for a fully delivered price to the door. Don't want to sell myself short and end up footing a bigger bill

Get a professional shipper to give you a quote then pass that on. Some of the removal companies will handle this sort of stuff

If you've got time then a shipping container seems the obvious route. International removals companies should be able to do it. You could be looking at 5 grand for a 6 week trip, there may be cheaper/better options...

As a part load it will be way less then that, currently looking at £1200 for 200cuFt as a part load in a container from Tassie to the UK door to door and packed, so a single item would be a lot less

True that. We went for a whole container as didn't want the extra delays that seemed likely for our route. Plus, we had a whole household of stuff!
