Hi all,
I hope everyone is well. Amongst the mile long list of excuses as to why I don't really do much exercise these days, I have had a fairly small epigastric hernia. I have had it for about 2-3 years I'd say. It is getting slightly larger as times goes by, and occasionally is gets uncomfortable. Along with lower back pain which has come back quite strongly recently, I feel like my body is worn out. I have been wanting to stretch my lower back but some of the good exercises feel like they are putting pressure on my hernia.
Does any have any experience with exercising with hernias? I know at some point it will need surgical attention but don't know when.
Amy advice would be great. Oh, and when I spoke to a GP about it about 2 years ago he told me to ignore it until it gets painful a lot.
Just get it fixed, sounds like it is affecting you quality of life.
NHS don't want to do them unless they are causing significant problems.
I had mine done in March privately. I decided I didn't want it limiting my life and there is always a risk of strangulation. Booked a surgeon, he took one look at it and offered to sort it 7 days later.
Watching with interested as I suspect that I have one too in my lower abdomen. Exercising can be a bit uncomfortable until I press it and it sort of "pops" back in place.
Karate grading the other week was a little unpleasant as I had to hold a pad while my lad tried to kick me in the guts 50 times. Thought I was going to puke.
Having had an inguenal hernia and suffered through it for several years (come back when you've had kids) I'd recommend getting it sorted as it doesn't sound like you're having fun. Best thing I ever did, occasionally gives a wee twinge but nothing to concern mysellf over.
I had an umbilical hernia the size of a fist.
No pain or discomfort, but it looked awful and of course there is the risk of strangulation.
Nhs fixed it for me, i feel better than I have for years.
Get it fixed, it’s worth it in the long run.
