Appreciate this is a really boring question, but any help would be appreciated.
Essentially I have a spreadsheet detailing all the goods I have in stock. To update my stock quantities after dispatching/receiving goods I have to manually type them in. Biggest problem with this is remembering to update the spreadsheet any time something comes in/goes out. leading to inaccurate stock levels.
My question is this, If I generate a load of QR codes and stick them on my shelves, is there a way to link the QR scanner (probably an android device) to Excel so that every time I scan an item and enter a quantity, the corresponding cell in my spreadsheet updates?
I am not an IT guy by any means so please go easy on me! Thanks in advance.
Could you do this with IFTTT link to google sheets. A quick google shows the two linked together for a shopping list ( https://www.instructables.com/id/Automate-Your-Grocery-List-Using-QR-Codes/) and another google shows a similar tasker idea where the code is scanned and the spreadsheet opened for further data input ( https://www.reddit.com/r/tasker/comments/2fefv0/tutorial_for_using_tasker_to_automatically_scan/, https://imgur.com/a/8fxA4).
How about this, sounds perfect;

Wow, knew this was the place to ask!
Thanks guys, that's my evenings reading sorted then.
The answer is Yes.
In our office we use Wasp barcode readers to feed 1000's of barcodes into [Excel] spreadsheets and [Filemaker Pro] databases.
No drivers to add (with Windows 7 anyway), plug and play. Zap the barcode and the data is fed into the cell/field and a return/tab is sent which moves the cursor onto the next cell/field.
Thanks sharkbait, those wasp scanners look interesting, does the add on allow you to adjust quantities before making a change to the spreadsheet?

Fill your boots. We use handheld scanners at work all the time.
All a barcode scanner does is replicate a keyboard (it just enters what it reads) - you'd need to alter the quantities yourself.
But that would be fine if, for example, you had a very simple spreasheet that had a column for the stock code and the next one was the quantity - the scanner enter the stock code for you and then moves to the next column where you enter the quantity.
Could a barcode reader and sortly.com or similar do this better for you?
Or develop something in Zoho?
Just checked a Wasp barcode reader with Google Sheets on a PC and, as I thought, works perfectly.
Don't bother with 2D barcodes - you won't have that much data and you probs won't need the redundancy they offer - just download a code 39 barcode font and print off the codes youreself (you'll need a star at both ends of the data string, i.e. *123456* reads as '123456').
