I'm trying to apply the below conditional formatting to 40 cells in the column S. I've based it all on a 5x5 grid with colours Green, Amber, Red, Black which appear depending on the combination of options chosen in columns Q and R.

I just can't seem to apply the same formatting to other cells in column S without the original cell colour copying to all others based on me changing the options in the original first row. Is it something to do with my use of cell referencing? Thanks

FORMULA:
=AND($Q$4="HIGH",$R$4="NEGLIGIBLE")

FORMAT:
Amber fill

APPLIES TO:
=$S$4

Your cell references all have $ signs, which means they're locked to that cell and don't update as you copy to other locations.

Use the $ before the letter to keep the column fixed but remove it from before the number so that it moves the calculation down a row as you copy it down if that makes sense
