That is a huge shock. Can't say I am a huge fan of him but you have to admit he was one of the most consequential Japanese leaders, sort of like Ronald Reagan. Will be interesting to learn more about the shooter's motives, I automatically assume right-wing nutjobs when I hear about political violence in Japan but could be a left-wing nutter too I guess.

Really surprising, although Japan seems to have it's own extremists of all persuasions.

Yeah, there are lots of right-wing groups that refuse to accept that Japan was at fault for the war and threaten politicians who they think aren't nationalistic enough. The mayor of Nagasaki was assassinated 15 years or so back by a yakuza gangster who was angry that his extortion racket got shut down. There are lots of other nutty groups, but the access to guns and willingness to use violence seems to be more likely a right-wing/yakuza thing.

Turns out it was a protest against the Moonies. There was a period as a kid in tbe 70s when we lived in fear of being brainwashed by the Moonies. I think they knocked door-to-door selling stuff or something?

Apparently with a homemade shotgun

bit of a tangent, but Ive always thought it was a bit odd how the Americans get their knickers in a right twist of the concept of 3d printed guns, and being able to print a (single shot, crap) plastic gun on $700 printer and this is somehow a massive issue, where as anyone with a couple of bits of steel pipe and a few basic hand tools could make a rudimentary shotgun in a couple of hours.

Any anyone with access to a Walmart can buy a real gun if they have cash and are prepared to wait.

I guess the waiting period and the receipt for the gun are the remaining fig-leaf that there is some kind of traceability in the process of ownership in the US.

On the assassination though, a terrible thing. it will change the way Japan does pubic politics hugely and, possibly, the current political decision making for a lot of things.
