Anyone found the radio yet?
It's stuck in America.
Anyone found the radio yet?
As per prawny, US only at the moment. I imagine it will be piss poor compared to TuneIn/Radium if their podcast app was anything to go by.
Safari is a pain in the rear now!
Upgraded mine at 1815 via wifi.
Took 2 goes but all ok.
Some useful short cuts.
I think in some respects its actually faster but I havn't played with it extensively. It is very slow the first time it opens something but thats always the case anyway.
I found the phone pretty slow before the update to the point of annoyance. I was expecting it to be much worse but so far I would say it is fine. Its a whole lot lighter than 6 was and fresher all round. I say go for it.
Just for balance one of the reasons I really didn't like it was because I am a bit of an android fanboi. I had to start using the 4 after drowning my HTC Sensation and it felt like a massive downgrade in every respect apart from battery life.
More like the Apple jailbreakers and Android devs implemented a feature that was already in Palm OS (and iirc open source by june/nov 2007), which is where just about every feature in Android came from (if not various Linux implementations). Jailbreakers were in pretty sharpish iirc (mainly to steal cut+paste from every single other phone that had ever been released ), so very likely they got it in in those intervening 4 months.
Then Apple played catchup?
Didn't Windows Mobile start a lot of this too?
The old XDA development community was always releasing various "ROMs" to update Windows Mobile devices. This development seems to have been carried over to Android now.
HTC were pretty active too, making most of the devices and "skins" over the top of the (pretty awful) Windows OS. In fact their Android devices still look a little like the old Windows Mobile days.
So Apple 'implements' a feature, whereas Android 'steals' a feature........? 😆
Now you're getting it 😀
More like the Apple jailbreakers and Android devs implemented a feature that was already in Palm OS
True that - look they are practically identical:
iOS7 Control Center:

😉
functionality almost on a par with android now
Don't think iOS 7 has actually added any new functionality really has it?
It's just shuffled stuff around a bit and made them pretty colours.
Underwhelmed.
It is however only a phone so it would be a bit sad if its operating system being upgraded was life changing!
Anyone else noticed that asyou move the phoine the wallpaper moves. Bit weird
You can switch that off if you like. I have.
Mine (14) had set hers to update overnight and was demo'ing it to me at 6:45 this morning. #bloodyteenagers
Teenager Fail, should she not be dead to the world until at least the last possible minute before going to school?
I have a very nice picture of a Hedgehog as wallpaper on my iPad. Since updating to ios7 the hedgehogs nose is obscured by the large buttons at the bottom of the screen. The icons are all much bigger, obscuring lots of the hedgehogs prickles. That is a shame as i like that hedgehog.
Won't make any odds to me - my wallpaper is plain black 😀
I gather that, as well as the parallax effect, there is also new "dynamic" wallpaper. All sounds like a great way to eat battery life to me 😀
I've not upgraded to 7 yet btw, I'll let all you eager lemmings have a go first!
you can turn off parallax effect in the accessibility menu.
Never mind. 🙂
I gather that, as well as the parallax effect, there is also new "dynamic" wallpaper. All sounds like a great way to eat battery life to me
I'm sure that Apple implemented that in a similar way to Android (or the HTC/Samsung variations thereof), and that the dynamic bit is only active when you're physically using the device (backdrops and gadgets). 99% of the time the device is sat in a pocket, locked, doing naff all, totally idle. Of course Android stole dynamic backdrops and widgets/gadgets from a combination of Windows and an array of user interfaces commonly used with Linux. 😉
edit: and I was right about the psychedelic
the dynamic bit is only active when you're physically using the device
Of course. That would be the obvious way to do it (no stealing about it, it's just the obvious engineering solution. Like turning the light out in a fridge when you close the door).
BUT.. it still means when you have the phone open at a menu screen then rather than the CPU sitting practically idle, clocked back and drawing very little power, it is instead monitoring movement, working out parallax effects and animating dynamic wallpaper.
To my engineering mind that is a waste of battery for pointless glitz.
(But I may not be the target audience)
I turned off the parallax effect, it was making me feel sick.
Installed it last night. I think the usability processes of the the interface has improved in areas ( such as task switching ), but that colour scheme is a considerable step backwards that makes a lot of things noticeably harder to read.
I've enabled bold fonts which has made fonts easier to read, but things like messaging is just so garish and bright in colour its really difficult to read I think.
If they just toned the colour saturation down a little, I think it would be a whole lot better.

Can't you just install a different txting app if that's the case? There must be some more tasteful ones out there.
I'm all up for an iPhone 5S when they are released later this month, will this "child freindly" OS be the version on it??
My Nephews will love it.. 😆
Jamie. GM seed wasn't available as an OTA update. Need to download from dev centre and shift click update in iTunes.

What, black text on a light grey background (note forum/post buttons ^^), or white text on a blue backround?
Should have gone to specsavers.

(Non-jailbroken) iOS doesn't allow third-party apps to take over primary phone features like calling or texting.
I suspect this is partly to maintain branding and prevent user confusion, and mainly because it would be a massive security and privacy hole.
(You can of course use a third-party "messaging" app like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger etc - but they don't get to send real billable texts)
Double tap the home button to show the switcher, then swipe the app's window/card, not the icon as was the case previously, up.
Is that a new thing? It's one of my favourite easy of use features about WP7.
Is this available for the iPad Mini? Assume it's a choice you have to make and not a mandatory update?
It's getting there, the perfect OS doesn't exist but if it did it would take cues from all the main players.
Swiping style texting (I was a late convert, it's so much better/faster than ordinary texting).
The Palm, Android and now iOS method of shuffling between apps is pleasing.
Android notifications/widgets and Window's live tiles are excellent.
Apple's camera is great...as is the build of the device.
Put it all together (and put a big battery in it) and you'd have the perfect device.... why is this so hard for any single company to do?!
The Palm, Android and now iOS method of shuffling between apps is pleasing.
They haven't really changed anything here in iOS 7 have they?
The only difference seems to be that the app-switcher-thingy now shows you a little preview of the app screen instead of just its icon.
Or is there something else?
well the new spotlight search is annoying.
I like it 🙂
But imho iOS 7 is better on the iPad. The flat look works well because there's more space around the visual elements and they don't need the skeuomorphic cues that worked so well on the smaller screens.
It will take a while to get used to 7 but iOS 6 looks really dated in comparison.
I was a bit perplexed at first but it's growing on me and I like and think its an improvement.
The new icons and lock screen behaviour is pleasing on the ey
New safari is better and I like the new implementation of the "reader" which is a quick and easy way of just getting text of a story, good for me if I don't have my reading glasses
New organisation of photos is very good, needs the location turned on for when you took them to work best but that's what I'll do going forward. I like the fact videos/panoramas are grouped separately in one view
New message (SMS) display great for me, very clear and as above perfect for when I don't have my reading glasses
New camera app more intuitive
Update Vimeo app is very cool (ok not iOS7 specific perhaps ?) preloads videos and runs them whilst you are browsing so you see more than just a still, makes it easier to decide what to watch
New alarm tones
Music app - certainly different, not sure if its more appealing to the eye, benefits from having Album/Song artwork\
Facetime voice only will be useful
Some cheeky bugger has knicked my Safari "google" search function in the toolbar.. (iPad 4)
When I find him/her I will imprint "google" on thier pinky finger..
🙄
I better try and find a NOS 4s while they're still Ios 6

I didnt suggest a whole lot had changed, just said it was a pleasing way of doing it, visually speaking.
Scrolling along the apps on my HTC One-S and flicking them upwards and away to close them was always a nice touch, my new Nexus doesnt have this, instead they are listed vertically and swiped left or right to close them down.
I dont know about iOS7 but on my Nexus the screen shot of the apps running/multitasking is the screen from when you exited the app and tapping on said app takes you back to where you were in that app rather than starting it afresh which is handy....if you want to start afresh the app can of course be launched from the home screen instead.
They are cracking devices though (smartphones in general, not any particular brand), i run my life from the phone and would be seriously inconvenienced if i ever lost it.

Address bar doubles up as search
Some cheeky bugger has knicked my Safari "google" search function in the toolbar.. (iPad 4)
It's now like Chrome and the latest version OSX safari, you just type in the address bar to search via google.
Edit: too slow...
I like it. Was quite unsure at first but having spent the day using it I have got used to it pretty quickly.
Double post
People on a forum this geeky actually use Safari? Didn't think that'd be allowed
Only on iOS. Chrome is ok but doesn't integrate as well.
They've copied a lot of the nice features from chrome in this release anyway.
"implemented"
At first wasn't sure, but after playing about with it, I'm loving it. Looks so much cleaner, does make the screen feel bigger and just works very smoothly.
I don't see what the problem is. Why don't all of you who don't like certain features of your phone, simply change that feature for something that you prefer?

Oh yes.... it's an iPhone... 😀

Mental isn't it? It's like those people who just want a factory issue car, rather than spending time replacing all the features to get something truly beautiful.
😆
Well iOS7 is killing my battery. It's barely lasted from 9-5.
It's also lost a lot of "slickness" that you only (used to) get with apple products. My phone has become clunky and slow.
If I wanted a clunky and slow interface, I'd have bought an Android or WinPho product.
I get the google search in the main address URL bar.. S'pose it's easier, easier if you are like 7!!
Ok, so the drop up with the wifi/brightness/volume thingy is ok, no it's actually neat.
But why does all this UI look cheap..?? That's my main issue..
Half expect two knobs to poke out of it for the etchasketch app.. 😆
main complaint is the calendar, you click on the day and it shows an hour by hour view, not just a list of actual items one after the other, so you have to scroll to see everything that day, big pain in the ass.
Turned off the parallax thing straight away, their quest to make it simple somehow included stupid battery wasting gimicks, shakes head! same goes for some of the zoom in and out animations, wished i could turn it off.
Other than that, its fine i guess.
Just used 2% of battery to send a quick text message - da fuq?

"Stolen", I think is the word you were looking for...... 😀
Does the private browsing feature still work in Safari? A friend of mine was asking earlier...

Press the "Search" button apparently.
http://m.tuaw.com/2013/09/18/ios-7-video-tip-how-to-view-list-mode-in-calendar/
Updated my 4 just before going to bed, the biggest change was sleeping 2hrs late for work as the alarm didn't go off.
Does the private browsing feature still work in Safari? A friend of mine was asking earlier...
Apparently, a friend said, that what you should really do is install a second browser like SkyFire that has private browsing, quick access to cache/history clearing, and the ability to transcode and play flash video.
Ideal for buying surprise birthday presents (or whatever else you might use private browsing for).
Thanks GrahamS, happy again 🙂
Chrome and incognito mode... just remember to close the incognito tab before exiting the browser, just closing Chrome leaves it on the same page it was on before. This can lead to awkward moments if someone else opens chrome next....
I'm coming round to it a bit, but i really can't abide the dock and the folders, the blocks of grey just looks cheap and nasty. Apple's shots do make it look a lot nicer than it is, I think you need the right background for it.
Is there anything for iOS (like ResEdit) so I change the icons to look like something you'd find on an adult's phone?
After an initial, "its ok" ...
It eats battery life
It seems to have slowed iTunes sync to slower that slow
The camera on my i Pad on longer works ...
When do you think the fixes will come out?
There's a private mode in the bottom left of a new window, apparently, I overheard some people talking about it in a cafe.
@bikebouy the address window doubling as the search window has been in Chrome and Mac Safari for a while, it was iOS which was lagging
Battery does appear to be running down more quickly but I think the reality is we are playing with all the phone features so keeping the screen on longer and some apps are having to reload data after the upgrade
Jesus, just updated the wife's iPhone, took 3 hours to download the update, now it can't even recognise the home wifi, and I've had to update that dismal shitehawkery that is iTunes.
By the way, slight security flaw you should all be aware of.
Basically by default you can access Siri and/or Control Center from Lock Screen.
Which is terribly convenient, but does mean that if someone nicks your phone they can easily switch on Airplane Mode, without having to unlock the phone, thus effectively disabling "Find My iPhone".
If that's a worry you might want to change those defaults!

Likewise. It took me a while to find out one or two little differences that irked me at first, like deleting emails is a swipe to the left gives a trash option, and the upward flick on open app windows had me flummoxed, but it love it now, it's so much easier to navigate between open apps.
I dislike the grey folder background, I'd love an option to set the background colour from a colour wheel, to give something that gives a more pleasing affect on different wallpaper.
The pad has pale blue, which I much prefer.
I haven't played with the music or camera apps yet, so I'll find out their little idiosyncrasies later.
Still, this is v1.0; I'm sure there will be lots of updates over the next few months.

Settings, Control Centre Access On Lock Screen fixes that
Just had a look at the photos app on the pad, and it's much better for scanning through loads of photos, I've got around 5000 on mine, and having them properly organised by date with clear demarcation looks so much better.
Also had a look at the music app, which I mainly use on my iPhone 4, as there's no music on the pad, and because of the armoured case I have on the iP5, I can't use my Shure phones. The layout is much nicer looking, and I like the little cover art pics on the left when scrolling up and down.
Just noticed something while looking at Safari on the 4; the vertical scrolling function when searching through open pages is rather nifty, like a Rolodex, but then when I got to the bottom, it carried on, and showed a list of the open pages on my iP5 and my pad, via iCloud! That's spooky.
Really bizarre that Apple have spent so long with beautiful and clear icons, and now replaced them with this load of incoherent toss.
Oh second vulnerability found with the Control Center on the lock screen. This one lets someone access your app switcher without unlocking the phone.
http://www.tuaw.com/2013/09/19/ios-7-lock-screen-vulnerability-reported-and-heres-how-to-fix/
Sounds like it is a good plan to turn Control Center off on the lock screen.
Settings, Control Centre Access On Lock Screen fixes that
They can still use Siri to activate Airplane Mode from the Lock Screen so you'd need to switch that off too.
I have an old ipad 1 running Ios 5.xxx. If I upgrade to 7 is my old ipad going to die under the strain??
Still, this is v1.0
Err... 7.0? 😉
Overall it seems ok, but I'm a bit underwhelmed. Basically they've just about caught up with the features on the Galaxy S3, which has been out for over a year. It is an improvement on iOS 6, but nothing more than a few display updates really. I'm sure I'll get used to the generally brighter, whiter screen and mildly irritating animations soon!
Oh, the change in safari to only show the server name instead of the full address is annoying too, I've no idea which page of the stw forum I'm looking at now!
I have an old ipad 1 running Ios 5.xxx. If I upgrade to 7 is my old ipad going to die under the strain??
iPad 1st Gen is officially obsolete & won't run ios7 🙁 5.1.1 is as far as they'll go.
They can still use Siri to activate Airplane Mode from the Lock Screen so you'd need to switch that off too.
Good shout, sorted
I really dig it, despite not being a big fan of the looks...
Only bug i've found so far is that the music controls don't work when the screen is locked... 🙄
PS. Sent using my phone as a personal hotspot to see if it works...
I like it, it took a while to find the right wallpaper to make the best use of the transparency of the folder windows, once that was sorted, it looks really nice. The animations don't bother me - I quite like them 😉
One bug I've found- when I open newsstand - I can't cllose it, or return to the home screen, I have to switch off my ipad !
iBooks is still skewmorphic, which really stands out.
How do I make the text go bold? It's quite hard to read on my mini.
Bah , played with my mates iphone 5 really liked the control centre.
Only to find after upgrading that control centre doesnt exist on the 4 🙁
Oh well.
Other han that it seems to be ok but i could have lived without it if i knew the control centre wasnt there
Seems I can play music held in the cloud without downloading the track/album... *likes
I'd second the function to change the toolbar colors from pale grey too..
Folder backgrounds and the control centre backgrounds are translucent, so they will show through the colour of your desktop. So if you don't like the colour of the folders you can fix it that way.
I do wish you could change it independently though, my previous nice beach scene that I had as my homescreen wallpaper gave a horrid american tan folder background.
Other than that, I like it, and the appearance had grown on me.
Yes once I'd figured out that the folders changed according to the wall paper _ I managed to get it looking really godd! initially I had a nearly black wall paper - which gave a dull looking grey folder.
e no likey on iPhone 4S, slower ang laggy
Same on the ipad2
Are you on O2, or a piggy back service like GiffGaff, Rusty?
That number is a special number used by Apple to activate/de-activate some stuff like Facetime and iMessage. Usually comes in silently, and non-chargeable, but sometimes can cause issues with non-official carrier plans. I am pretty sure GiffGaff have zero-rated the number, so won't charge for it.
Hi Jamie,
on O2, not a piggy back service. Just had a third text.
On the bright side, we all know Rusty Macs mobile number now 😀
New 5S out today..
Yey!!
