Wow, good job the ranger found them first. That's a step up from a bit of wire accross the trail, what a couple of psychos.
christ all mighty!! they need locking up
Last time I was in the mountains in Utah i asked about mountain lions etc. and was told to be more worried about the ZOGs. Full on armed mentalists with persecution complexes.

Christ that is unfortunate if he supports Wigan too....
When I ride there, my local friend (Federal Agent) always rides armed - they even do bike thermals with a built in holster:

Blimey - that looks like an excellent way to shoot yourself in the arse!
REMEMBER: Negligent Discharges Happen folks.
footflaps, why does he carry a gun - wildlife or nutters ?
has he ever needed it when riding ?
Edit - LOL at GrahamS's video. He's not posted that in order to be ridiculed, it's just a lucky bonus I guess !
Often thought a 9mm would be good when I'm out on the road bike for the arseholes who think they shouldn't give you any room a couple of rounds through the back windscreen would change their thinking 😈
why does he carry a gun
I think there's a whole different culture re: guns. A lot of Americans do it 'just because' like taking a mobile with them.
It doesn't really enter their heads that there might be need or reason not to carry a gun at all times.
Brits all look a bit baffled when confronted with this.
Given the bloke above's job I suspect they have a requirement to always be armed?
I heard an amusing story about someone training for what to do in the event of a car hijacking, and the bloke in the passenger seat had a MP5 something (compact SMG), and had braced himself against the dash with his foot and they are taught to start firing as soon as the gun is level with the glovebox as the recoil will lift the barrel, unfortunately the barrel also drifted left so he put a bullet straight through his foot.
Apparently the piss take was brutal, and he was only given a week to get over the injury or else be dropped from the course.
WW - I have my summer holidays in california and the local ride is the park where the guy was killed by a mountain lion. The following visit, I was amazed at the shit they'd carry with them - Rambo convention on bikes !
It's all calmed down a bit since then though I was chatting with a guy last year who was a copper and carried his gun because he didn't feel right without it. He was absolutely clear in his mind that a mountain lion could get him well before he got his hand on the gun
Rambo? More like Ewoks hunting Speeder Bikes.
I went to gun show in Lander Wyoming never hving even held a gun before. When the stall holders became aware of my desire to have my photo taken with a gun, an assault rifle was pulled from beneath a table and thrust into my arms. It was described as the 'perfect tool for shootin' cans.' The subtlety of it passed me by. My pal later explained cans were not coke or bean cans but Mexi-cans and Afri-cans. Ignorance is bliss. I wondered later if Ameri-cans were legitimate targets.
Wyoming, the equality state, was declared by the gun club as the only Communist free state in the union.
"after I shot myself my training kicked in, I called my parents"
nice!
I take it that is to discourage people from straying too near to the mar-a-ja-wana farm that Cletus and Billy-Bob were planning?
Cranberry, what is that song?
Always makes me chortle.
A few years ago when i visited my mate in Dubia he took me along to his gun club after getting to fire a few hand guns the guy said to me since ur a friend of Stews and it's quite tonight do u fancy a shot of the big boys toys and pulled out a AK47 i now don't leave home without one
Why does he carry a gun?
There is a risk of mountain lions on the trails but it's more a cultural thing - he carries a gun everywhere - concealed carry permit. Guns by door, guns in glovebox etc. If you travel around the US, you realise how desolate and empty most of it is and the whole survivalist mentality makes a lot more sense once you've spent a while there.
Also good fun to visit - got to play with a small percentage of his arsenal on a local range:
AR-15 was truly awesome - the gas recoil is mind blowing, let alone the bullet coming out the other end. To think you can just walk into an outdoor shop and buy one over the counter is surreal.
Me playing with an AR-15:

A friend of my brother, who is a rocket scientist, (seriously, he launches satellite carrying rockets), lives in Denver, and has a cabin way out in the boondocks, and has a variety of weapons. He told my bro' that as far as Denver Police are concerned, the legend on their cars, 'To Protect And Serve', is no longer relevant, as they can't protect the populace, and carrying a firearm was the best way for people to protect themselves.
Also it's important for the perp to be killed, so he can't sue afterwards!

I live in California. I am a US Army veteran, and while I served I had the opportunity to shoot at things. I am aware of the American penchant for personal armament, but I do not share it. I have not fired a weapon since I left the Army. In 1968.
My chances of being shot by another American are far greater than the chance I will be killed by an animal because I was not armed.
What an amazing thread... and an amazing website, too - many thanks Repack... great inspirational pics of the original mountain bikes/bikers.
