Not keen tbh. Neither the singing or the playing are a patch on the original.

She's a very talented artist but quite a poor singer of her own songs nevermind cover versions

I think it's the intonation and laconic style that is so frustrating. It's like she is too cool to try to do it with some effort. The recent collaboration with Kurt Vile showed this. He gets away with it though.

Frustrating? Man, I find the vocal pace matched to the guitar. I like the listfullness, to me it matches the ‘but I don’t need a runaround, I just stay home’ mood perfectly.

she manages to fill the space somewhere between Gillian and Dave. Gillian’s vocals I’ve always thought a little on the thin side and Dave’s mugging live, well if he weren’t such a talented guitarist it’d put me off! But I’m a long time fan of her/their music. I still kick myself I didn’t go see them when they were support for Mary Chapin Carpenter, how was I to know they wouldn’t play in Scotland again. I only caught this cos ‘Gillian’ posted it on their social media...

remember this is a solo live recording. And I love it, so **** ye’s!

(yeah, I don’t wanna go downtown either, the musics too loud.... 🤣 )

The most inoffensive thing I've heard lately.

Metalheart, yet a subtle review of a country song. Needs explaining surely.

But, how very dare you "thin vocals", Gillian's singing is absolutely spot on for her songs.

Re the cover, takes balls to play a Dave Rawlins tune. I don't know the singer, she seems talented. I hope she has found her own voice. The original is way better in my humble opinion.

I saw Gillian Welch live in London about 12yrs ago, it was very good, did want it to go on and on esp. Dave's guitar playing.

@karlp: I said a bit thin... and I should’ve added ‘at times’. I’m a big Gillian fan, I travelled down to London for the harrowed & hallowed tour it was brilliant. Worth every penny....

im happy for people to disagree, but I just love this version. It marries in with the I don’t wanna go downtown from Boots #1 that was mentioned earlier.

Look her up..

Maybe being in Oz for a while helped but she is incredibly talented and has a skill of being able to tell the truth

Love her music

I think she’s great and really like her new album. Not quite as good as the first one though

I saw Courtney on her last tour in Bristol, and she rocks harder than you might imagine from hearing the songs from the album. The project with Kurt Vile was rather over-egging the pudding for me, just a bit too laconic. Not heard the new album yet, but I’m really fond of the EP’s and her way with word-play.

Wow! She rocks, most of what I've see and heard before was acoustic but she killed it in there. Awesome set starting with the new album and then the older stuff.

Got me a little homesick for melb and tassie!

My wee brother saw her on sunday, said she was the only good act at the Nick Cave thing. That's why I didn't go mind.

Nope. Gillian every time.

that said if she writes/performs for a few years more she may be worth a revisit.

how did you know not to go when your brother couldn’t know Nick wasn’t any good? Does he have a time machine?

Nick was great BTW but not quite up to the recent O2 gig, Kylie was not bad either 🙂
