Hi,
The wife and I recently bought our first house and it's a refurb project. I've done pretty much everything I can inside before handing over to the professionals so looking for stuff to do externally.
Now the garden was quite the state when we bought and I've cleared a lot but today I noticed that the actual brick and the lintels etc could probably do with a wash.
Can anyone recommend methods or products? Is it just a case of a wire brush and a pressure washer? I don't want to do too much damage to the bricks/mortar.
Cheers
That’s what all the commercial cleaners use, often just a pressure washer. For more delicate work they may use a DOFF machine, which is lower pressure but higher temps, but they’re available for rent.
https://stonehealth.com/products/doff/ For example
I ve just done mine with a decent jetwasher, Karcher k5,, just the ordinary lance but with the hi pressure one for the stubborn bits. I bought stone cleaner from kingfisher products, but it was the jetwash that did all the work. Finished off with a coat of stormseal.
Really impressed, rain just beads off.
Did the stonework round the drive too, once you do the walls it makes the gutters and soffits look dirty.
I've been prepping my house for the renderers, a jetwash works a treat. Doesn't damage anything remotely sound.
First question on my mind is 'how old is the house?' if it's a modern one then a lot of the above will be absolutely fine. If it's an older house with line mortar/soft bricks/not super strong render/many other things, then a lot of the above will utterly bugger it!
Thanks,
House was built in '59, so ill just scrub and rinse first and then maybe pressure wash anything stubborn.
Although probably won't bother with a DOFF machine for the external brick, I've got another job that it would be perfect for and I didn't know such a machine existed; probably saved me a huge chunk of money in other remediation methods. Much appreciated.
For ongoing maintenance I'd DIY.
On first moving in, I'd pay a professional with liability insurance.
Sprayed with mould cleaner then pressure washed an hour or so later.
