Yesterday I bought something from Evans online.
Today received an e-mail from "the 3rd Man" on behalf of Evans Cycles.

Dear D Wyatt,

We are e-mailing you on behalf of Evans Cycles regarding the order you placed at www.evanscycles.com/. We undertake additional security checking on behalf of Evans Cycles running random security checks on online orders to help protect customers.

The following order has been randomly selected for a security check:

Order Number:

Order Date: Wednesday, Mar 4 2009 at 7:35PM

Please could you reply to this email confirming the following information:

The name of the bank your card is registered to.
The expiry date on the card.
The address the card/bank statement is registered to.
How long you have lived at the address
The reason for the goods being shipped to the 3rd party address.
The full name and address of the person you have elected to send the goods to.
Please note that your order will not be dispatched to you until we have confirmation of this information.

Sincerely,
Customer Services
The 3rd Man, on behalf of Evans Cycles

Has anyone else had these?
Isn't it a little strange?
I really don't think i want to provide some of the things they ask

That looks well dodgy. Its the way they say that a lack of action will result in no delivery just like the 'no action and your bank account will be suspended' phishing emails. Having said that, they do know your name and order time/date. Being naturally cautious when ordering online, I'd be very sceptical about the authenticity of an email like that. Phone Evans and confirm?

I would not reply under any circumstances whatsover even if Evans said it was Kosher. No expert but it does not follow any standards of best practice of personal data security.

Some the things they as for are of no use apart from theft!

If it was genuine.....big if! What would they want with expiry date and bank?
I don't think a genuine company would want that!

Scam. Did you place an order at that time? Either way, it's a scam.

They want too much information to seem genuine. I couldn't believe that my credit card company rang me up and asked for my personal info to verify who I am - DOB, Postcode, etc. I said I'd call them back and it was them that called me which I think just makes it easier for people to scam as they just have to do what the credit card companies are doing anyway.

I was buying few things from Superdrug and got an email to phone them up as just to confirm my address and tell them what I ordered. I was never asked for any card details or other details that could be used as a answer for a security question when contacting the bank.

Wouldn't even bother replying to this 3rd Man but I would forward this email to Evans. Even if they say it's legit and You need to answer those questions than just buy from somewhere else.

Its the time i ordered...roughly!

And they have some of my details. Just don't uderstand the need for the rest. I had to use my banks on line system to pay. Surely thats enough.

And the line about why do i want it shipped to third party.....its quite obviously a works address. Quite a large company too as it goes! Well very large!

Think i'll call Evans, if they say its genuine..........i'll buy my helmet from somewhere else. Don't want to answer the questions!

I doubt very much Evans will say it is genuine. If they do then I would report them to your card issuer.

Evans say they use 3rd man to keep tracks on card fraud!

Its a new system they use, its genuine and if i don't supply the details i don't get my item!

They then said that i could cancel the internet order and buy over the phone. This doesn't need so much info!

I was passed over to sales

The second guy then said they don't have any of the helmets left.
I said no, thats because i have one succesfully ordered-you just won't let me have i-I need to cancel and re-order it.......it went on....

I gave up.

Idiots.

That's unbelievable - under no circumstance would I volunteer that amount of info, especially not via email.

If that is legit, I don't think many people will be using Evans internet services in the future!

I *think* it'll be due to the amount of (attempted) card fraud that goes on with them but you're right, there's no way I'd give that kind of info, especially not via email.
Goods delivered to third party addresses are sometimes flagged up as being 'more suspicious' by internet retailers and card issuers although I've never had a problem ordering stuff off Amazon/CRC/Wiggle/7dayshop etc and having it delivered to my work address.
