Hi all,
What would be the disadvantages in buying a euro 5 diesel van for both uk and foreign driving?
Specifically thinking of a vw camper
i thnk there's some cities it's not allowed in.
And there will be more
Means you have to find a park and ride or train station before going into some cities. I haven't had a problem yet, but haven't had to go into a decent size city on the 3 trips to France/Spain since I've had the van.
Driving through/round Paris/Toulouse doesn't matter as the low emission zones don't usually include the motorway sections.
I can see it euro 5 is banned in certain german cities and zones.
You'll need a crit air to get into some French cities. no problem based on euro version, but you just need one.

You'll be poisoning the planet and contributing to global warming. Or is that not quite what you meant? 😁
Ulez areas for the UK, primarily. London is expanding to just inside the M25 roughly.
You need to look at both ULEZ and Clean Air Zones. Being a van it's Class C and D clean air zones, which cover a lot more cities. And more are in consultation. Just costs more to drive in, or as said you the Park and Ride systems or public transport for city visits.

Is a VW camper classed as a van? I've no idea, but my Merc Viano is M1 so a car, I assume a VW Caravelle is the same but a California or the like might be a van....
My camper is N1. It doesn't actually show a Co2 rating on the v5, but its Euro4
Without checking the reg it's hard to know.
My 20 year old T4 Kombi is M1 "diesel car" on the V5 and so isn't charged in class c Caz areas but the ved is higher than a van of the same age.
I was thinking about changing it for a different vehicle and I checked loads of kombis/vans/caravelles/campers and very few were exempt unless they were Euro6.
Are they totally banned from those cities , or can you pay extra to pollute ?
£12.50 a day in London to add to the pollution!
Stick the reg in the London ULEZ website, see what is says. Old 07 polo was euro 4 and it says its currently still compliant
I think Euro 4 & 5 are fine for petrol but diesel needs to be Euro 6 .... i think
If it's registered 2009-2010 as light goods then it's half the normal VED rate at £140. Wanders off muttering about how a more polluting van can be cheaper...

Ah yes I think you might be right, my bad
"VW camper" isn't enough unfortunately, you would need to check the plate to see how it's registered.
My T5.1 Euro 5 140bhp Kombi has to pay emissions charges to enter UK cities.
My friends T5.1 Euro 5 140bhp Caravelle has the same chassis and engine, more windows and seats and is exempt.
For the UK cities you can check here : https://www.gov.uk/clean-air-zones
Due to ULEZ I've got to scrap my van...with euro 7 diesel engines coming out..I can see the goal posts moving...so euro 6 won't be acceptable anymore...my point being, best get a petrol van
…my point being, best get a petrol van
Euro 7 for smaller vehicles differs because it'll apply the same levels to petrol, diesel and EVs. It hasn't passed through the EC yet and won't if the motor manufacturers get their way. Why EVs? It deals with tyre rubber emissions, brake pad dust, etc. as well
Assuming a smooth progress to law, it won't be here for two more years at least
Can you modify a euro 5 diesel engine to make it ulez exempt?
Bradford is now £9 a day to drive a van into the city but they are offering grants to upgrade your vehicle or make the engine compliant.
I was thinking of buying a euro 6 van. But with euro 7 possibly coming out, is there any point? I have considered an EV, but we don't have off road parking and the public chargers are few and far between in Suffolk.
why would you want to enter a ULEZ in a camper anyway? I want to escape from people - not find more of them.
I have considered an EV
I was looking at 2nd hand electric t6s the other day and thought they seemed very good value.
However, from new they do 85 miles. Then add a campervan conversion, aircon, lights, radio etc and you will be lucky to get 50 miles.
The poor range is why most of them are getting sold

I mean seriously, what's the point in that.. in a van ! Sure maybe in a small car to get to the office, but a van surely by default is designed to be driven.
Due to ULEZ I’ve got to scrap my van…
Presumably because it's worthless anyway (irrelevant of ULEZ), otherwise you'd just sell it?

I believe you have to scrap it to qualify for the grant aid to buy a compliant vehicle.
There will be a financial tipping point but if scrapping it plus the £4500 grant exceeds what you can sell for then that will make it viable.
Judging by what I got to scrap my Transit Custom that would mean it would be worth scrapping a £7k to £8k van using the scheme.

Not everyone has more than one vehicle.
Some of those people want to go to places inside the zone in that vehicle.
Hope that helps.
For example in Sheffield I don't think many people plan to wild camp on Fargate but they might want to go to Decathlon to pick up some camping supplies. This would now incur a £10 daily charge (and a £100 fine if you forget to pay the charge).

Again ! Another scrap scheme, so wasteful it's disgusting.
The electric T6.1 was a bit of a stopgap, VW shipped part-finished vans to ABT who fitted the running gear (loosely related to the egolf). It got them over the couple of years before the ID.Buzz and soon the Transitporter replacement for the T6.1 which will have a full EV version.
The range is limiting but absolutely fine for a lot of van users. I suspect the average plumber or electrician near me covers less than 25 miles a day tops.
Euro5 camper could be fine if you live outside the various zones and won't visit them often, or if it's purely a leisure vehicle and you'll use another car for the zones. Even if you do a few times a year the cost to do so is way less than the premium for a Euro6 one now.
I suspect there's quite a few in suburban London with owners hanging on to see if the expansion will be scrapped or just getting a last summer out of it before planning to sell later in the year.
">Presumably because it’s worthless anyway (irrelevant of ULEZ), otherwise you’d just sell it?</p>
Oh I can sell it ...but it's mine, all paid for and it my work van...mine...I don't want to sell it...im being forced pretty much...how would you like it.
Where live is right on the edge of London... espom downs is closer to me than a tube station.
Move house and keep van?
This is one of the reasons I bought a new Ducato over a slightly older (and not much cheaper) 2nd hand one.
Euro 6 D Temp..... Don't know what the D Temp means exactly, but it does mean we don't have the hassle of getting fined for driving around.
Download the "Green Zones" app, stick the registration number in & it'll show you exactly where you can & can't go in the UK & Europe.
Most cities restricted areas are small & central at the moment, where I'd rather walk or get the tram/bus anyway, I'm sure they will expand though.
IFAIK, France treat euro 5 & 6 the same, both get a yellow "2" crit air sticker, so euro 5 can currently go anywhere. Probably to stop them rioting when it was introduced.
