They're going to need to get out of their own half at some stage.

Can't see NI keeping out the Poles (can you say that?) for the whole game.

Wonder if Sterling will start the next game?

Yes seosam, I did! 😀

Don't get me wrong, they played better than they have for many years, however, my point remains that any decent side would have exposed the frailties I highlighted to a far greater degree than the Russians managed.

A team of such young average age does mean that they looked run out during the second half, blowing their loads too early I fear.

Crikey, this is a tough game for NI. Must be knackering to spend an hour chasing a ball and hardly touching it. Lucky to be only 1-0 down. So still hope. If Russia could do it...

They played fine, just glaringly missing a focal point in attack.

Canny see it, the Russians just wereny great so pushed back by England. They didn't intentionally play defensively.

Saying that at 1 0 is precarious so who knows. Pressure looks right off Poland the now though.

When Kane was on korners in the friendlies, I thought it was just Woy messing about. When it carried on into the actual tournament I just gave up.

poland are a bit meh here, shouldn't have taken their foot of the gas, they'd have taken a few more. guess they are happy with 1-0, but that's a dangerous game to play.

NI did all that could be asked really, bit sloppy on the goal not to have one of the three central players at edge of the box but a valient effort.

So roll on Germany Ukraine, fingers crossed for an upset 😉

Nah, now I have them in the sweepstake, they're going to do a Leicester and win the thing.

They have players like Vardy, Mahrez, Drinkwater etc right?

nice baw in, free header though, poor marking. 1-0. ye'd expect the germans to dominate and take a few, ukraine struggling to get near the german box, I can only see them getting pushed back further.

Germany will win the 2016 cup.

Spain probably runner up.

Croatia seems to have too many old legs otherwise they are good.

England probably get booted out due to the hooligans in the second round.

I see Joachim Löw's assistant still daren't tell him that he doesn't want them to dress like twins anymore. I find it a bit bizarre. Managers/coaches should be in team suit or in team sporting attire - not looking like 50 year olds going out on the town.

When you play the man and not the ball.

How's he the wrong side? When you're defending the 18 yard line at a free kick like that, the 'wrong' side would be for him to give his attacker the chance to get the ball before him. In this case he's ball side of his defender but the delivery is brilliant / he's 2" shorter than he needed to be.

@binners excellent 🙂

re Boateng's clearence here is my German fans story ... was in Singapore watching the South African WC Germany v England match in a French bar full of Germans. Anyway Lampard's "equaliser" I'm off my seat doing laps when I spot all the Germans laughing, no goal. Then one says "we have seen this before one time" 🙂

That free kixk is very hard to defend, are you behind the man to watch him and ball at which point he's there first or he's behind you so you can "cut it out" then you can't see your man and ball can go over your head ?

Oh Jeez...after being able to spend the first three days sitting back enjoying/not enjoying all the other teams, I get a quick butterfly alarm about tomorrow. Yeah, just Sweden. Then the small matter of Belgium and Italy. Italy's lack of goals (1.6 per game in the qualifiers) and Belgium's injury ridden defence should see both of them easy pickings. 😆

When you play the man and not the ball.

What if you do both? You can take a man's legs or completely with your body but as long as you foot touches the ball that makes it ok?

Sometimes you can play the ball, but if it's from behind its a foul!

Depends if you leave your leg in for a bit of afters Molls.

You're aware football is a contact sport though?

Except in Italy, obviously 😉

need to hit the baw firstly, but it's open to the refs interpretation though, if he thinks it's too dangerous. studs up/tackling from behind etc are fouls.

it's a contact sport but has become increasingly less so over the years.

rule 12 if I remember right, go and read that. tells you all about fouls

This is the problem, it's hard to explain in a pithy sentence.

Broadly, but it's a very grey area now. Playing the ball is not enough to be a legal tackle. If you play the man and the ball, or even in some cases ball only, it can still be a foul if the tackle is felt to be careless or reckless or endanger the safety of the opponent. Which is why the 2 footed lunge where the tackler misses the opponent and gets up making the symbol of the ball with their hands is an automatic red card because of the danger rather than the outcome.

Hence why the foul for the freekick was a wrong decision, but not a badly wrong decision. He got the ball and he got the man, however did he get ball first, man first, ball and man together? In the past it didn't matter as long as you got the ball somewhere in there - Tony Adams made a career of it 😉

[edit - I do still have my Ref's badge, whistle and cards in the loft somewhere]

The tackling from behind confuses me a bit sometimes to be fair. I thought that rule had been brought in to stop the tackler going "through" the ball carrier. Has it changed? (Genuine Q.) Seems that most tackles from behind are penalised these days. I'm guessing that he ref has to judge each one on its merits i.e. how much of the "man" gets taken out with he tackle. I hear the pundits saying "...but you can't tackle from behind these days..." Clearly, you can, but it has to be done very very cleanly.

This is why I like having no allegiance, I could support scotland or ireland, if I choose, but it's just not my thing to support a national team, my da's big ireland fan, but I much prefer watching the big tournies with no allegiances, I really really enjoy them that way.

I keep my butterflies for club fitba! 🙂

Always behind your man or he can go anywhere. and certainly make sure he doesnt get a 2 yard start on you.
Once the ball is kicked make sure you are goal side - if you dont screw up best he can do is either head it into you, or a slow looping header over you.

Either way, regardless of the quality of the cross, as a defender, when you've given your man an uncontested header, you've screwed up. When you do it playing for your local pub team, you apologise and carry on. Professionals shouldn't make basic screw ups

I enjoy them all. But I much prefer having my teams involved. If we'd not qualified, I'd probably be saying the same as you though. 🙂

EDIT: that ^^^ @ seosamh.

As for the defending from a free kick, FFS, an U14 team would defend that better. In fact, thus far, around 90% of goals scored have been as a result of defensive errors.

essentially that's it, difficult to penalise someone who hasn't fouled! 🙂 you can tackle from behind, it's just a difficult thing to do without fouling.

@DD, it's not in the laws which in themselves rarely change, but every year there are pages and pages of international board decisions which are what really matter, as they provide (or try to provide) the consistency in how the laws are interpreted.

And yes, one of the IBD's was basically that a slide tackle from behind in the vast majority of cases would result in the unprotected achilles areas of the attacker being hit, and hence had to be sanctioned as dangerous, thus effectively outlawing the slide tackle from behind. As with the two footed lunge in my earlier post, in theory you can slide from behind and get ball only but the probability is that you won't and in committing to the tackle you've already become careless if not actually reckless.

So you can 'tackle' from behind still, but realistically it's limited to trying to toe poke it through his/her legs.

They need a committee to set it in stone really, what constitutes a foul. This would ideally consist of Paul Scholes, Kevin Davies, Roy Keane, and Patrick Vierra
