I thought the FA level 1 coach was a 32 hour qualification. If its actually being delivered in 16 hours then that may be a reason why coaching quality is a bit low.
Compared to other sports a level 1 FA coach seems to be given a lot more responsibility than a level 1 in other sports where they're working under the supervision of a level 2.
It'll be the same as usual. They'll be recriminations, and then the same old shit will happen. Short term, money focused FA don't have a clue. Needs a top to bottom clear out and a long term, talking 10yrs, plan to turn everything around.
But that's too much like hard work. So we'll get to listen to Chris Waddle exploding at Russia 2018 after we get knocked out after a poor performance by Albania.
Best league in the world apparently. 😐
Highlight of the game for em was when Ian Wright's trouser's had a "Wardrobe Malfunction"
Ian Wright using the film Space Jam to describe England's demise was pretty good.
I don't buy the bit about it being the PL's fault, after all plenty of other teams who are performing better than England have players in the PL, France, Iceland, Italy etc.
I put most of the blame at Woy's feet, England never had a strategy, tactics or any clue of how to win games. He had favourite players who no matter how bad or unfit got selected anyway, and he didn't seem to take players to create a balanced team. In fact at times it looked like the press were selecting the team, not the England management. How he got the job is beyond me, his record at Liverpool was dire. The FA need a serious think who they get next because they need to get it right. Just thinking about it Jurgen Klinsmann might be worth a look, did well getting Germany back on track and understand the PL.

True, but most have a core of their national team playing in their native country.
....with some of the South American teams being an exception. Not saying it's the main reason, even in the top 3, but it is a contributing factor IMHO.
As for Roy....has no-one seen it yet? Roy HodgSON. Icelandic secret agent Roy has been building to this moment for years. Those pesky Icelanders have caught us like they did our cod.
I have tried to be very mature about this but I still woke up and thought Iceland and then s****ed
I was laughing out load, it was one of the funniest things in ages. There is nothing immature in that, England lost a competitve tournament knockout game to Iceland who where the far better team
To be honest, I think we were all laughing last night, so you had no need to hold it in till today, Junkyard.
I feel the England time should be commended for their ability to lighten the mood in these dark times. They gave us the gift of united jollification.
They gave us the gift of united jollification.
Indeed, after the divisions of the Referendum this brought us all together.
Roy is spineless, resigning in the post match interview. His contract was up anyway. Describing the players as having been fantastic is ridiculous.
My outside shouts for manager - Wenger, Ranieri ..
I think YOUSE might have al forgotten I ma not English
FFS you lost to Iceland.....ICELAND...
Ok enough schadenfreude for me
It's only schadenfreude if you can take pleasure in others pain, and speaking for myself, am totally fine with it.
We know you're Scottish, and make the appropriate allowances, but just scroll though the thread. It was ****ing hilarious.
Plus some of us did very nicely on some cheeky bets 🙂
Moving on, has anyone else taken a punt?
p.s Binners. You still owe me for the Raheem tips. I trusted you 🙁
Class is also a problem in English football, how many of the current, or even historical, English football team are from the middle class? How many have a dentist or doctor or lecturer or banker as parents? Compare that to Italy or Germany where much of the team hail from the "middle class". So while we say that England has a popn of 60 million it only draws talent from what is described as the working class. The only vaguely middle class players from recent England teams are Theo Walcott (?) and Fat Frankie Lampard, whose dad was a footballer.
Why is this?
^^ what the **** has class got to do with it? ^^ how many Brazilian stars have come from virtual slums?
Yeah not sure how class comes into it.. Rugby players seem to be doing ok, and not many of them come from working class backgrounds.. traditionally you don't get many middle class boxers, but the odd one (like Eubank Jr) seems to come through..
IMO it's due to a variety of factors.. to the players having money thrown at them & smoke blown up their ass since they were about 12, not as good coaching at a young age, the general public overestimating their ability due to the strength of the domestic league, possibly the lack of a mid season break, players not caring as much as previous generations, poor tactics with no back up plans etc..
I'm not sure what class has do with anything but Eric Dier's bio about his background doesn't sound very working class.
Englands problem apart fromt he awful coaching, is that they took hardly any decent midfielders. I'm sure we could all list a load of players who on paper may not be world beaters but would work as a team better than Rooney and an unfit Wilshere did. For instance how was Drinkwater left at home?

What utter nonsense.
I'm finding this whole 'the problem stems from English football's roots' stuff a bit puzzling to be honest.
I've had a fair bit to do with a local team from the age of about 8 to 12 when my son was playing (in goal) for them and I worked with a coach of the team.
There are SOOOO many youngsters playing football - this small village had 4 teams in each age-group (less now they've gone up to bigger pitches and a massive contrast to the local rugby teams), every tournament was packed with local teams - and this was just Saturdays - there was a whole different league on a Sunday. Not that I think this has anything to do with it, but they come from all backgrounds (ie. classes)! Some of these kids are amazing little athletes and I certainly don't remember kids having the level of football skills many of these lads have from the age of 9/10 when I was growing up.
The coaches qualifications were bloody hard too according to my colleague.
So, some lads are picked out as potential talents and pushed in that direction - scouted by the big clubs...
The main problem I saw was the lack of decent referees! and that is unsurprising when the whole culture is to shout, swear and argue with every decision... not sure how that effects the pro game however.
Nah, there's something else wrong in English football... I don't know what it is though! An uncharismatic drip of a manager certainly can't help at international level.
So roy hodgson turns up at todays press conference and says "i don't know what I,m doing here" ,maybe mate you are there to explain your tactics and thinking to the thousands of England fans that spent tons of money going to france to watch that crap.I,m a wales fan and that wound me up,if I was an england fan who spent a lot of money to go to france I think my head would have exploded.
Rugby players seem to be doing ok, and not many of them come from working class backgrounds
I think the current England rugby squad is roughly 50/50 private/state school educated.
However, you can certainly compare and contrast the determination, fortitude, skill under pressure, organisation, team spirit and professionalism of our English national rugby and football teams. The rugby team having just won the Grand Slam and whitewashed Australia 3-0, the "A" Team having won in SA and the U-20 side having won the World Championship for the 3rd time in 4yrs.

It affects the pro game because the players act like oafish yobs (even though, off the field, most are perfectly decent) and think they're bigger and better than the game because they're paid too much.
A decent manager would have helped but if the players can't execute basic skills like delivering a free kick into the box (Kewell) or not letting the ball run under your foot (Rooney) then there's no hope.

Indeed, but ALL nationalities do it. What I meant was, how it makes England shite.
[edit] Also, what I omitted from my post is that 99% of the footballing kids were trying bloody hard, giving it their all and really didn't like losing!
Junky of course we haven't forgotten you are Scottish, we are sharing in the moment. Its hysterical.
I'm not a proper football fan, but I like to watch the WC/Euros type stuff.
My take on England's problem is partly to do with pressure. England are on a hiding to nothing as soon as they qualify for a tournament. The pressure for England to do well is immense. This isn't helped by our media's big them up to knock them down mentality.
There is absolutely NO pressure on Wales/Scotland or N Ireland to do well like there is on England. This is partly to do with the fact they haven't been to as many tournaments and also the fact they are much smaller nations with much smaller player numbers. And this is how it should be.
The sooner we (The English) accept the fact that England are shite and stop bigging them up so much, the sooner we can start to rebuilt and start to look forward to being mediocre and maybe one day decent.
The players are good, maybe not world beaters, but they are good. But they should be allowed to enjoy the tournament they did so well to get to. The pressure should come from themselves to play well and win when they get to the big games, not the media and the like.
It was the same for the Rugby team in last years world cup, whereas I don;t believe Wales had the same pressure from the public/media.
I actually thought the hype around the England team was less this time around than it has been for a long time.
I don't buy this pressure thing: I think it's purely down to poor team selection and management.
It's certainly not the only problem, but I think it's there and plays with the minds of the players and management. Suppose you could blame weak management for that though.

errr..do you remember just a few short months ago our rugby team's ignominious dumping out of it's 'own' home world cup?
It's the coach. We have some half decent players they just need to play in a modern system that works for them under a world class coach.
Hodgson = Lancaster
Now who = Jones?
I don't think class has anything to do with it but education does , something isn't happening at youth level that gives us the mental strength that other teams have . If the Germans had gone behind against Iceland in a knock out game you can be sure that the players on the pitch wouldn't of gone into their shells like England did , they would of organised taken control and won .
At the start of the tournament, Mrs Binners mate put a fiver on Iceland reaching the final at 90/1.
Could they conceivably do a Greece?
I don't think so. I think they may beat France, but Italy or Germany will have the measure of them.

This is what I was thinking last night watching the headless chickens in England kit. I think a quality manager and more importantly, a good captain to ORGANISE the rabble when there is a set back would go a long way.
I know this is getting like linking to the mash all the time, but David Squires take a bow. Yet again.

the usual excuses of englerland not being technically good enough or have the mental strength tosh being rolled out again.
So how technically good enough do you have to be? If that were so why are they commanding such high wages.. because mugs in the uk have sky! Interesting how many uk players are plying their trade outside.
Mental strength is gained by doin well in previous tournaments according to bbc poundit lineker. ( has he not seen the remaining teams in the last 16 or who just beat england ?????)
Its deja vu after every tournament and it gets very tireseome .. lucky its only every 2 years and just as well fans have a short memory.

Wrong players, wrong formations, no run of form.
Picking Wiltshire was the classic example, then getting nothing for most of a game before putting the young lad on too late. Leaving someone like Townsend back at Newcastle when he was flying at the end of the season. Messing with formations, not thumping the Slovaks etc. glad it was all on in the middle of the night for me
so really what lineker was actually saying was its the manager that is technically inept and lacks mental strength.
I do feel the poor performance and slack play is down to the players. I can miss balls in the local park as good as the england team. Its complacency and believing that football tournaments owe them something rather than earning it. Yes you have qualified for the tournament but everything is reset and the winning is the next phase.
As per boxers stop thinking about the next fight and concentrate on the current one. ( see slovakia / iceland game). It would be interesting if any of the players take accountability and do something positive
I heard Lineker on the radio last night. Sounded like the FA had his family in a basement somewhere, as I really cannot make any sense of what he said otherwise.
This tournament came round too soon for this young group of players? Oh really....
Can we not have all this pish in the Euro 2016 thread, as England are erm... Out?.
There's another thread that would be more appropriate for analysis/post mortem/crying in yer carling in the England manager thread.....
You will take my pish, and like it, young man.
As long as you keep calling me young man, sir! 😆
@bongo I met Linekar at a work so once, he was pretty candid. Why be a manager or any other high risk, high stress job in football when you can just sit on the fence as a tv presenter
How about we withdraw from the world cup on principle as its being held in Russia. It would save money and further false expectations. We could also let our players rest more 🙂
@Nobeer, yes true enough. Allez Les Bleu
As long as you keep calling me young man, sir!
🙂
*polite cough*
Poland v Portugal (ITV)
I would really like to see Poland progress, but Portugal seem to have that scrape through vibe going on. Plus Lewandoski has left his shooting boots on the England bus.
...but I am going to chuck a couple of quid on Poland doing something.
I've chucked a few quid on Poland too Bongo. I reckon I might have a bet on a silly score like 4-2 to Portugal though, as well
With Skybet they give you some ridiculous odds on various scenarios. So for example I chucked a quid on it being 0-0 and no booking points. Which, given who's playing was stupid.
...but, if both Ronaldo and Lewadoski score a header, I get £150 off £1. 🙂
All of the above have more of a chance of paying off than my Raheem bets from the other night.
🙂 Bongo you can't defend quality like that !
Heart says Poland, head says Portugal
2-0
Come on Poland.
0-0 aet Ronaldo to fluff his lines in the penalty shoot out...
Plus Lewandoski has left his shooting boots on the England bus.
Heh
boom ..now lets see ronny get his game face one
Blinding finish that! My bet on 3-2 to Portugal might be in with a chance 🙂
Bizarrely - Ronnie to score during the match was 3/1. Seemed rude not too really. That's just free money, surely?
It is till I bet on it 😉
Poland to bore Portugal into submission now...
Gareth Bale would have scored that.
Harry Kane would have put it out for a throw.
Harry Kane would have [s]put it out for a throw.[/s] just about made it reach the wall
FIFY
I watch other teams and wonder why cant England pass and move like that? What do England do in training?
Woof!
Edit: A little deflection, Andy Townsend? Looked quite a big one.
Edit 2: Ok, corrections have been made.
Nice finish!!!
geez you call that dancing.. next you're going to say man utd play attractive penetrating football under lvg!
oopss banging it in
Well...that knackers my HT/FT bets.
Portugal and Russia....my nemesiseses when it comes to bet spoiling.
I've forgotten how rubbish the commentary by Townsend is. All pretty cliched. Poland coming back them. Now will Ronny score with a rocket to win the match?
All a bit divey...
All a bit boring...
Ronaldo - air shot 🙂
(BTW the wife said 5 mins ago "have you stopped watching" I did explain there wasn't much to watch 😉 )
blimey ..Ronny doesnt need more contact ..he need to go to specsavers..is he borrowing Rooney's boots?
Pepe.....hate is a strong word....but I will make an exception here.
Christ the last 2 Portugal games have been hard work....
Looks like Ryan Giggs is pursing new career paths.
Well this is pretty dull! 😕
Russel Kane is on Question Time tonight though. Should be good! 🙂
COME ON POLAND! BEAT THAT PEPE!
I've cursed Ronnie by betting on him scoring, haven't ?!! 😀
Russel Kane is on Question Time tonight though. Should be good!
The most annoying of the Russell's after & I'm including Russell Harty on that list.
lol....looks like someone else wanted a selfie.
That's the most interesting thing that's happened the whole game
That's the most interesting thing that's happened the whole game
I've been hoping for a dog to run on the pitch since the 10th minute.
That's the most interesting thing that's happened the whole game
I'm not sure if it's ITV that makes football crap or if they just pick crap games...
Little bit of both.
Lee Dixon and Slaven Bilic is the only redeeming thing about ITV coverage.
I don't even care who wins this. They're both shite!
Anyone not want Poland to win?
...and here to liven up this dogshit game, is some generic euro-adverts.
