so despite being a Dog person who has alergic reactions to intrusive tech... i find myself in need of a home camera so that i can talk to the cat when im on holiday.....

if i buy for example, an Eufy S350
eufy Indoor Cam S350 Nanny Camera: 4K UHD PTZ for Indoors - eufy US

do i need anything other than home wifi and an app on my phone?

For the purpose you've described an Amazon Echo Show would do the job and have some more use for when you're back if you're not planning on rolling out CCTV around your house. Just use the Alexa app to "drop in" on the Echo show and if the cat is there have a video call and they can see you as well.

We have a couple of the Eufy indoor pan and tilts (E220), bought them a couple of years ago to check on the dog when she's home alone.

Just need the app, WiFi and an available socket to plug them in if yours aren't battery powered, ours aren't but it's not an issue for us we just leave them plugged in with a USB adaptor.

Super easy to set up and we've recently added an outdoor solar powered, happy with all of them.

I might take a gander at the amazn stuff, but that typically falls into alergic reation territory 😀

I use a Tapo C210 for this. Pan & Tilt, 2 way audio, £22 on Amazon at the moment.

Reolink if all you want to do is observe and talk. If you have a NAS at home it can be used to record stuff from the camera.

Another Tapo C210 user here for pretty much the same purpose but keeping an eye on the dog when I go out. Easy to use and works away from home.

I also have the eufy home base thing which means it can store to a giant SSD drive but if you're ok with microsd card storage then you don't need it
