If it saves lives then I'm all for it.

It's been mandatory on boats for years for the radio and GPS to be linked so in an emergency you press 1 button and it automaticaly transmits your position and our lizzard overloards haven't yet taken over the high seas.

There's no method to track you if it only wakes up on an impact.

Also, if you're carrying a mobile phone, then you're being tracked 24/7 by your mobile operator and anyone (with a court order) can see where you've been without telling you.

All mobile users have effectively signed up for 24/7 tagging....

Surely if you were determined that no privacy invading government spy should find your bleeding unconscious body in the twisted remains of your car on a quiet country road in the middle of the night you could just use your tin foil hat to cover the transmitter.

Confused, according to the article E-call is supported in the UK, so we have the infrastructure in place?, but MPs are saying to enforce it is going to cost lots of money?

Yes it will cost a bit extra on the price of a new car, but what would need to change about the infrastructure, which surely is the bit that will cost the government money?

Driving a car is not a right, why shouldn't cars carry black boxes to monitor the drivers behaviour? We need a change of understanding that drivers do not have a right to drive and that laws exist.

and Google and probably Farcebook too. Especially if you have that messenger PoS installed.

While I would really like to see far more stringent laws applying to the use of data in protecting privacy, in this application I am failing to see a downside to the technology.

Judging by the infographic, it calls an American ambulance. It's going to take some time to arrive.

Mission creep - from the article:

However, Mr Taylor said that while it was technically possible for the technology to be used for road pricing, "there is no current plan to introduce it" and "any introduction would have to be thought about very carefully".

If it's "technically possible" to do road pricing, it means the system is online, all the time - not just in accidents. From there it's a short step to the government mandating a permanent record of all car journeys.

And that Tory MEP is a bit of an idiot, too:

Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan opposed the proposal when it was debated in the European Parliament.

He told the parliament: "My constituents have never said, in the 13 years I've being doing this job, that what they want is a common European number to call in emergencies."

I'm guessing he's never asked, or if he has it was such a loaded question that the answer was bound to be negative. What kind of person wouldn't want a common European number? (In fact we have one: 112 - in the UK it redirects to 999, automatically.)

Not necessarily. It all depends how road pricing is done. If anyone ever does introduce dynamic road pricing, it will mean a new tracking box design. It's all a bit hypothetical given there is no spec for these boxes yet..

Just Daily Hate scare mongering....

Because it's from Europe, those evil people who gave us the GSM standard which we all fall over ourselves backwards to buy the latest Apple/Android model every time a new one comes out, and ironically allow the mobile operators to track us 24/7.....

Unless all the ambulances are tied up with shunts where no injuries have occured, but the system has made a call or people pressing the 'manual call' button accidentally or at a minor shunt, so they're none available to deal with real emergencies.

It could have the opposite effect.
