So, after brexit, do our existing EU passports cease to be EU passports, or do they stay as EU passports until they expire and are replaced with our new blue passports?

Tried google and only got loads of results informing me that we will have blue passports.

They, and any replacement, are valid EU passports until there's an agreement between the EU and the UK on how Britons holding those passports are dealt with at border crossings. Depending on that deal there may not be any difference when you travel to and from the EU regardless of the colour of the cover.

You don't have an EU passport, you (presumably) have a UK one.

When should I renew my passport for maximum eu time?

Irrelevant zippy … all UK passports will cease to act as EU passports at exactly the same time, no matter their expiry date or colour. When that time is… nobody knows… worst case is April 1st next year… but, barring a self destructive government, we should get 20+ more months after that at the least.

Do passports issued today mention the eu?

Mine runs out next year and even if it doesn't work I want eu on it.

According to this page you can renew whenever you want but up to a maximum of 9 months will be added to the new one.

Your passport will probably be valid, but not as an EU passport and depending on how and when the EU implement the new visa scheme you will need to be preauthorised before enter the schegen area, almost certainly with a cost attached. Google ETIAS
