Slightly esoteric one, this.
Say I wanted to connect and iPad to ethernet using the Lightning to USB adaptor. What USB ethernet adapter do I need, or will any old one do?
You should be able to use something like this.
Ethernet and lightning
Very very frightening

Most will work - the amazon basics USB3 one is well supported in most kernels so i would _expect_ to work but I've not actually tried it with an ipad. Cheap and easy to return if it doesn't work.
Two problems you might encounter - ipad is very picky about how much power it'll provide, so you may find you need to hook up power as well. Which brings me to the second issue - if you have the older lightning to USB that doesn't have the lightning input for power, not only do you have power issues but it's also only USB2 compared to USB3 on the newer one, so you'll be limited in bandwidth to ~400Mbps.
The plan was to use the newer USB 3 adaptor so I can use power for the reasons you mention (though technically none of the devices I have support USB 3 over lightning, only USB 2).
There's an even cheaper TPLink 100-base ethernet adaptor, which would be fast enough if it works…
Being an electronic engineer, I thought this was about Ethernet surviving lightning strikes...
Non Apple person here.

Though I’m a power engineer and I do do Apple.
Why not a Ethernet Wi-fi adaptor?
Why not a Ethernet Wi-fi adaptor?
Just because 😛
andyg1966 & img + me too, although I’m not an electrical engineer but mainly because a recent thunder flash directly overhead knocked out my modem router and the Ethernet port into the iMac which was connected by cat5 to the router, permanently 😳
Which reminds me to see if the Genius Bar will repair the Ethernet port...
