He clearly slipped and fell under the lorry, got caught in some straps and was removed against his will. Could happen to anyone.
Who runs the prison he "escaped" from? It wouldn't come as a shock to me if serco or g4s released him by mistake and then made up a tale of a daring escape to cover up their incompetence.
Perhaps he is pleading not guilty of escaping from lawful custody because he is challenging the legality of his detention?
Unless he wants further publicity for his cause, whatever it might be, or he has been advised that there was a technical issue with his detention, it does seem a bit pointless.
Oh god, please be a Freeman of the Land defence with a good sprinkling of Magna Carta!
IIUC / as I recall it; lawyers / barristers have to advise their clients on the legalities and strength (or otherwise) of their defence but no matter what the lawyer's opinion, if the client insists they are not guilty is obliged to represent them as best they can.
This one's stretching that to the limit, isn't it?

This one’s stretching that to the limit, isn’t it?
Unless there's a chance of a much reduced sentence then what's the point of pleading guilty? May as well have a day out in court, an bit of infamy, and the slim chance of getting off on a technicality.
Chances are that it’s just half the story for the sake of a headline. He’s probably pleading not guilty to “escape” but admitting “absconding “ or something.
