I know this will horrify a multitude of STWers but I find wearing my baggies on the road bike a bit sweaty and cumbersome (don't need loads of zips/vents/pockets)and the drag halves my awesome speed potential 😉
On a serious note I'm after some just-above-knee shorts...black, not shouty and inexpensive but comfy (no Assos, Rapha for def!) - maybe Endura or Pearl Izumi, or whatever you recommend.

Cheers

I have Assos and Sportful bibs both very good, however just got Howies bib short and jersey bundle £95ish and so far been very impressed with the quality and comfort of Howies and prefer them to my Assos & Sportful ones.

Howies +1
Matt-black, so subtle. Obscenely comfortable due to lack of seams. I rode the 1400km LEL in them (3 pairs) and didn't suffer in the slightest.

i've just dropped baggies for my commute (hangs head in shame 😥 ) using some scott bibs from start cycles (£25 iirc) which are comfy and a couple of pairs of polaris shorts (non bib) i bought from a halfords bargain bin for £5 each - surprisingly not too bad for a 50min commute and cost me less than a days bus fare/parking to boot! not sure if i'd set off on the great divide in them though. just got some planet x clubman lights which look good but yet to be used in anger - they were £25

So you're subtly telling us a budget there or are you just prejudice against certain brands 🙂

DHB are fine if you're doing shortish rides, they do put the labels in an annoying place though. Gore, Castelli, Sportful all good? but may be too expensive.

I got the level below FS260 (extract?) I found the 260 just a little too, I dunno, tight's the wrong word... They seemed to be less stretchy than the Extraxts less forgiving somehow. Dunno, anyway personally I found FS260 weren't great.

Pearl Izumi for me - I find 'em more comfy than Assos.

Gary - correct - more budget than brand.
Don't want cheap tat - more a good comfy pair than will last (but not hideously wallet-harming either)!

I know what you mean nickc.

I like the thickness of them. They feel a bit more like mountain bike lycra rather than barely there road lycra.
But I seem to remember I went up a size to get a good fit.

Adidas BC kit of last year or TeamSky of year before available at Addidas Outlets if you have one near you, v comfy. Just the shorts though not the tops.
Also Giordana a good VFM.

I get on well with the Lusso ones, they're a good price and also a British firm. Win! 😀

I've got a couple of DHB pairs at the moment. The pros are pretty good, but I find the pad more comfortable in the cheaper roubaix ones. Any DHB legwear is good value and quality in my experience.

DHB are good for me. The more expensive ones are better. I have both the Aeron race and the Aeron Pro. Done rides upto 150miles in them without issues.

I'm generally a bib user but I find in hotter weather the straps get a bit sweaty.

Craft Active bibs. I wear them under baggies too for MTB.

I've got the Endura FS260. They work well - I assumed the extra snugness was intentional. They do work very well either way 😆

On the DHB label point, I do agree but after a couple of rides I don't notice them. I had the pair above on for an 8.5 hour ride on Sunday and didn't notice the label!

+1 for Lusso shorts. I think I've got the carbon bib shorts and they are very comfortable.

I had some DHB bibs for my ride down the West Coast, chaffed in a very strange place and were binned somewhere in Oregon

I have quite a few pairs of bib shorts so don't wear the dhb ones exclusively so notice the label every time I put them on. To be honest its worse on their 3/4 bibs than on the areon pro ones.

Saw some nice Altura Pro Gel shorts (new styling) down the LBS.
Seem like they have substantial nether-region padding - getting some my size in next week.

Anyone tried these? Can be got for less than £20 - any good?

Used to be DHB but the prices crept up and I started looking elsewhere.
Homies are currently doing it for me

What's the sizing like on the Howies? I'm 6'3" with long skinny legs, assume I'd still need the L/XL?

Endura FS260 here (4 pairs), but shorts rather than bibs.

From a purely comfort POV (& I have assos, pearl izumi, castelli endura as well) I find zipvit shorts by far the best. Only 37 quid as well, but you do have to live with the branding.

I will never buy anything Endura again, I've had several bibs, jerseys, overshoes and they have all fallen apart sometimes in a matter weeks.

They get recommended on these threads because the brand is everywhere but quality control is IME dreadful.

FWIW most recently Ive had a couple of pairs of Pearl Izumi InRcools which have been sturdy and comfortable.

I agree - old Endura stuff I had, lasted ages and seemed very well made; recent Endura stuff, terrible quality and fit. Avoid.

Decathlon 700 or 900 series shorts are very, very good for the money (£40 ish). Good pad, not to hideous design and a good fit on me at least.
