Ok, so just bought one - stupid really, but couldn't turn it down for price + actuations.

Any advice on what second hand lens would bring out the best, without costing me the earth?

Cheers, Rich

17-40L F4, much cheaper than the 16-35 F2,8 and a quality piece of kit.
Might help if you let us know what you shoot.

With out being horrid...if you've gone and bought the above, this is probably the wrong place to be asking these kind of questions.

Joe - Not horrid, understandable, hence why I admitted my own stupidity. However, It's not my first venture into DSLR, but have always stuck with kt lenses, I do not require a 1,000Mp camera as will never print more tnan A4, and I enjoy photography, and am a Canon man, and it's nearly Christmas, so why not?!

DavidJones, thanks, I'll get googling.

You definitely need to let us know what you intend shooting with it. I'd go for the EF70-200 f4 L series lens as they aren't that expensive second-hand (£400 ish in mint condition) and something like a Tamron 17-50 as they're a lot cheaper than the 17-40 L series Canon and it has a constant f2.8 aperture and VC (Vibration Control) as well.
I've recently added a 1D MkII to my 1Ds Mk III & MkII as I wanted the 1.3 crop factor as well. Got mine for £300 and it's mint with only 6,200 shutter actuations as well. I was well pleased and consider it to be something of a bargain.
dribbling enjoy it and the fact that with the right lens on it will handle any weather and conditions you can throw at it unlike lots of DSLR's round today. Yes they're big and heavy but when you have a big lens on or need hold it steady, heavier is actually better.

24-105 f4 L is a nice walkaround that won't break the bank (relatively speaking seeing as we're talking about a 1D here)

Really depends on what you want to shoot, but as a perfect match to the 1dmk2 try a 24-70 2.8. You need a fast lens as the noise above iso640 on the 1dmk2 gets a bit much. The sigma version can be had relatively cheaply

Jeebus these lenses are expensive! I was hoping to get away with £300 max, but don't want to waste the body.

Subject-wise, I've never settled on one type; close range/nature shots more than anything, but will be upping my game now and experimenting more, mate's got a MX race at end of month, so fancy giving that a shot as first experiment.

It's probably an all-rounder lens I need, but really, do I need to be spending £500+ to achieve potential of body?

Primes might be an option but you lose all flexibility.

50 1.4 and 100 2.8 Macro would do it justice but by the time you've bought both of those, you could fund a 24-105 f4 L…

Get yourself a 50 1.8 and use your feet. Can be a real quality bit of kit and remember it is effectively a 65 mm lens on a 1d.

I second the 24-104 L as it's a very versatile lens indeed. The Canon 24-70 f2.8L is a very nice lens as I have one but they're bloody expensive and in fact the Sigma 28-70 f2.8 isn't a bad lens and can be had very cheap and if your not blowing your pictures up to huge sizes will be more than adequate.
You don't need to spend £500+ on a lens but you've bought a camera that's protected against the elements and that's what your paying for over say a 60d etc. Yes at high ISO's the 1D will suffer but it's focussing is lightening quick and walks over modern DSLR's even today. Plus at lower ISO's it will still be sharper than modern equivalent cameras as well.

50 1.8 is great if you treat it like a 2.8…

How much experience do you have of MX races?
How big are your balls?

I used to take a lot of cycling pictures and loved getting up close and generally worked at 17-24 on a 20D. I did have a good relationship with most of the riders and a high level of trust/confidence.
What lenses are other MX photogs using? I imagine up towards the 300mm range and f2.8ish. A fair bit of money, but it is a half decent camera.
You wouldn't spend 3k on a bike and put 10 quid rubber on it, would you? Would you?

This.

I'd be looking at the 50mm f/1.4 and using my feet in your position, or saving up for either the 24-105 f/4 or 24-70 f/2.8. I know the 24-70 is a faster lens, but the anti-shake on the f/4 24-105 gets you several stops. I've shot many frames well below 1/25th with the f/4 and get actually sharper shots than at f/2 on a non-VR prime.

And whilst there are obviously photography forums for this sort of question, I think there are enough photographers on here to offer sensible advice, if the quality of photography on the pictures thread is anything to go by.

I'd go for a grey import 24-105f4....should be about £550 from the usual suspects.

I've watched one.

How big are your balls?

E-Massive.

Seriously though, there is very close (5m) spectator view of a hauuuge jump which I'll be next to.

You wouldn't spend 3k on a bike and put 10 quid rubber on it, would you? Would you?

If I ever spend 3k on a bike, I'd go get myself examined.

Some great suggestions here thanks, the 24-105 L looks like a spectacular lens, but just too expensive. Maybe though that's what I need to do and MTFU. Missus doesn't need a Christmas present after all, maybe a picture of me will do?

The only thing I can say is that maybe a Tamron 28-300 might be worth a punt until you find what focal lengths you use the most are, and any limitations.
Not a bad lens and wasted a bit on the EOS1D, but it has a good range, isn't too heavy and can pull out some acceptable images.
I'd also think about a decent flash if you're doing MX and action shots, something that will allow shutter speed synching.
Get out there and take pictures and enjoy it.

My daughter bought one last month and best price was from Hdew (£605) Good service, came very quickly in plain box and suspect it was split from a 5D mkIII kit

Or eBay for the Hong Kong sellers.
What budget?

This 24-105f4 keeps cropping up...which makes me think I should be getting.

...which is a problem as my budget is £300!

The thing with the L lenses is that they are top quality and unlikely to lose too much on the second hand market. A good one from Ffordes at 650 could probably be sold for 500 without a warranty on eBay.
Tamron/Sigma/etc will depreciate more and more quickly.
300 is unlikely to get you much, I'm afraid.

Afraid you are not going to get much lens for 300gbp unless you start looking at second hand glass.

TBF a 1D with cheap a lens is just a waste of money. I always budget on spending more on lenses than bodies. You could just stick a cheapo 50-250mm 3.5-5.6 zoom lens on it but its a bit of a waste of a good body. Plus you'll look like an idiot.

That said if you can pick up a Sigma 24-70 F2.8 mk1 - then they were cheap back in the day 300ish and not bad for the money, the mk2 is even better but neither are a patch on the Canon L series stuff. the only thing I found with the sigma's is that they arn't as robust as the Canon L series lenses.

If I ever spend 3k on a bike, I'd go get myself examined.
Are you sure you are on the right forum here?... 3k for a bike isn't a great deal these days.

DavidJones, again top advice - thank you.

OHH, thanks, re-iterated information I should just get the credit card out & spend on the lens.

However, on bike business disagree; my latest cost £650 with full xtr, service, and mint condition, with all receipts & manuals and a nice cuppa thrown in.

Anything over £1k is a mixture of marketing, warranty paranoia (unless you're a pro) and such like IMO, but that's a different topic!

EDIT: Referring to s/h prices!

Um, why do listings for the 24-105f4 talk about lens being made in Japan?

Perceived better quality than made in China / elsewhere?

It's a Japanese company?
Have a look for a long zoom, 28-300mm and don't worry about the F number or brand, then see what you photograph and what limits you. Then decide how far you want to get into the activity. If you're near north Shrops I've got an old zoom you can borrow/have at your own risk.

To get the best out the AF especially for fast moving sports like motocross you need f2.8 lenses as this enables all the cross type sensors and those on the periphery of the AF area to be used.
I would save up and buy a 24-70 2.8 canon lens. I might be persuaded to sell mine 😆

Thought maybe there were different manufacturing locations.

Very generous offer thanks DavodJones and sensible advice. If you were near to M6 I'd take you up on that offer as do that route on occasion.

MrSmith, thanks, not settled on anything yet - MX event is just an experiement.

The 24-105 does seem like the most versatile option, and what I will probably end up going for, but will try to get hold of a 28-300 lens to play about with first.

Thanks, Rich
