Long weekend so it seemed a go idea to enlarge the fireplace in readiness for a wood burner.
First problem, no lintel. Installed a lintel (hurray).
Second problem, after removing the rest of the plaster, it seems the brickwork is dog rough.
Third problem, the pot liner is essentially held in place by loose bricks with mortar around them. None of these bricks are actually tied into the brickwork of the surrounding fireplace.
Question: What's the solution? The pot/clay liner may very well be self supporting, but I would feel better if something was actually support the bricks and mortar surrounding the pot liner.
Here's some pics:

Question: modern(ish) house or older property that has had a fireplace reduced in size?
Did ours last year and the brick surround from the burner in place was 'false' the fireplace itself was huge.
Dug the brick out and made good, no worries. The liner was held in place partly by the top and partly wedged in place in the chimney.
Might just be the camera angle but the lintel looks to be bending?
