This stemmed from listening to Mike Halls talk on his Transcontinental ride where the audio was terrible. I could hardly hear it so downloaded a programme called DXF Audio Enhancer which improved the volume level quite a bit and also made it sound better, however without paying for it it revets back to rubbish every 30 min or so.

Is there a way of increasing the volume of the laptop (in the same way this DXF programme does) without the need to use this seperate application and have to pay for it?

It's a laptop, it's like to sound crap what ever you do. I'd invest in some bluetooth speakers or earphones.

I use free the version of DFX as mine is a bit weedy in the sound department.
Never had it change the sound for me, though. Works fine.

Also, maybe try VLC as your media player as it allows you to put the volume up beyond the normal '100%'

"This one goes up to 11"

"No really, it goes up to eleven, so.... Elevens better, right?"

I really don't know why VLC did it like that.
I mean, the old version went up to 400%, but the new one only goes up to 200% and is louder than it was at 400%...
Why not just call the highest volume 100% and be done with it (unless it actually is a Spinal Tap reference by the programmers)?

Can you go into sound settings and adjust the db gain?, you should be able to adjust the sound by up to +12db.

Load up and max the equaliser?

Bluetooth?

Buy a bluetooth speaker from Amazon?

Managed to buy one cheap even through my laptop has surround sound vs 5W external bluetooth speaker 🙂

which operating system?

w7+ & maybe vista have an option to do dynamic range compression and eq which is what it sounds like your program is doing. it's enabled in the sound control panel.

I bought an external USB DAC (about the size of a phone) and plumbed it via the Cyrus amp. They are also available with headphone sockets if you're travelling.

Makes a really noticeable difference. My wife who is a wonderful person but thinks I am a perfection chasing nerd at times (she may have a point) noticed the difference so it must be real.

Not the cheapest though.
