Well - if you're talking history, what exactly was the score the last time England played Scotland at football.....

'RACIST' T-SHIRT COULD CAUSE MORONS TO SAY STUFF
24-02-10

A SCOTTISH t-shirt expressing dislike of the England football team could cause morons to say things, experts have warned.

The shirt, which wishes success to 'Anyone But England' in this summer's World Cup, is likely to provoke at least 48 hours of tedious debate about post-devolution British identity and why Scotland needs to grow up.

Experts say the policeman who warned an Aberdeen shopkeeper about displaying the shirt must now take responsibility for the resulting avalanche of bullshit articles and mind-buggering exchanges on Live from Studio Five.

Julian Cook, the Nicky Campbell Professor for the Understanding of Stupid Debates at Reading University, said: "At first you'll get some articles about why the police have to intervene in every single little thing and how this country simply isn't free any more.

"But that will quickly give way to columnists saying 'actually, this incident does raise a serious point about Britain...' when, of course, it doesn't. It just ****ing doesn't.

"And by the end of today the BBC will have sent camera crews on to the streets of Glasgow and Coventry to gather up the kind of soul-destroying responses that will lead to yet another traffic spike on French property websites."

He added: "By Friday you may even get a column in the Independent about 'why must the British media analyse absolutely everything?' which will of course be written without even the faintest whiff of self-awareness."

But veteran Daily Telegraph columnist, Denys Hatton, said that while the t-shirt was no doubt meant to be taken in jest, it would inevitably lead to the break up the United Kingdom and generations of blood soaked conflict that will divide families and lay waste to Berwick Upon Tweed.

He added: "When will the prime minister have the guts to accept responsibility for this genocidal 't-shirt' and go back to the land of chippy, drunken, bestial perverts from whence he was puked?"

If we (ie Scotland) had ever won it then we'd bang on about it as well.

True. Celtic's 1967 European Cup victory being a case in point.

some scotch folk are weird. The folk defending this t-shirt, as a laugh, are the same ones who take the huff when English media interchange Scot & Brit and talk about Englands chances at the world cup.

It's ok for the Tartan Army to be patriotic but not the English.

Small town teuchters.

1. Scotch is a drink.
2. Who interchanges Scotland and Britain? English media *should* talk about England. The problem is British media (along with most people) interchange English and British.
3. Nobody's saying the English can't be patriotic. When it comes to football it's half the fun. Wave your flags of St. George and try not to be too bitter that foreign birds love men in kilts.

In your office....right, that must be case for ALL English sporting fans then

Well you know what - it's not just in this office. As a Wales fan who's either lived in England or worked in mixed offices all his life, let me tell you it's not just ONE office.

Banter is part of the game, no problems there, and it's defintiely both ways. The English rub Wales' noses in it when they win because of the 70s, and Wales reciprocate because of the 80s and 90s 🙂

It's when it goes outside ruby that it can get bad...

Pehaps the shop in question should diffuse the focus of any offence by widening its range; ANYONE BUT RANGERS! would be a popular model, ANYONE BUT HEARTS!-put me down for one of them!
ANYONE BUT MURRAY! would sell loads down south... 😉

Olly, are you seriously telling people not to voice the fact that they're offended? Exactly what qualifies you to tell people to STFU?
I really don't care what the jocks wear/do north of the border. Nothing they do affects my life so let them crack on.
I would be very interested to hear TJs view on this, his opinion on racism(if it offends or discriminates by nationality/race/culture/anything; it's racist) would normally have condemned these shirts and he would normally be all over a thread like this.

We'll only have to support the other teams in Englands group as they won't be going any further than the group stage.

people, please.

let's not confuse the anti-Murray thing with any anti-Scottish sentiment.

i'm English*, i'm delighted to see Scottish sporting success (Chris Hoy, Ruarhid Cunningham, etc. etc.), but cannot bring myself to support Murray simply because he seems like such a git.

*happier being described as european.

Backhander; most countries see English as British? Dream on.Some of the "third world" countries you referred to such as France and Germany are pretty quick to establish nationality.

Who's referred to germany and france as third world? Not me, I suggest you re-read and understand. In fact, I have not referred to any nation as third world, I quoted a comment from another forum to indicate the typical english POV which is perhaps not that the other tribes are third world but that the english typically don't care what is said/done over the borders. I certainly don't.
Most countries cannot/do not distinguish between any of the british tribes, like it or not.

You're correct, two words. But I wouldn't exactly call it the 'standard uniform' of the English football fans.

Actually, places like France, German, Spain understand the concept of nations within nations. Brittany, Bavaria, Catalonia etc etc etc. Most of Europe has a similar background in fact.

Did you lot for example know that Holland is only two of the regions of the Netherlands and not a synonym for the whole country as I was originally taught?

What you actually said was that that opinion of not caring about what a few third world nations though of England summed up the whole arguement for you.The French and Germans dislike the English, therefore by your own logic they are third world counties.

That's some twisted "logic".
Actually, it's not logic at all.
I've not stated in any shape that all nations who dislike the english are all 3rd world.
Now, if you could just prove that you're not spouting total crap by proving that ALL german and french people dislike the english please.
Actually don't bother, I've lived in germany and can tell you that you're talking rubbish as they don't hate all english people at all.

I'm French and British/English. I guess I'll have to hate myself.

The French definitely don't hate the Brits but very much enjoy saying that they do 🙂

Quoting you own words would obviously not be logical to you then? Does the phrase

sums it up for me
ring any bells? If you want to change your mind a couple of pages later, thats ok.If you think the rest of Europe likes the English,or fails to make the distinction between the different countries, you are deluded.Deal with it,you have already stated you don't care, have you not? Oh I forgot, you now didn't make that post.

Jeez! What a beaut idea.

Reckon I could sell containers full of those T-shirts in Oz. Even the Poms would buy them.

Just wish I'd thought of the idea, and then the masterstroke of getting free advertising by getting a police complaint.

How much is a column inch of editorial worth as an advert these days?

Duckman, I think you'll find that the attitude in most of Europe towards the English is the same as the English attitude to most of Europe: indifference. Apart from the more politically motivated with an axe to grind, that is. I, like pretty much everybody I know, have far more pressing things to worry about than what folks in Spain, Italy, Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic or anywhere else are thinking about us. And I would hazard a guess it's the same in all those places too.

I remember a t shirt with the slogan "i'd cry too if I were english" adorned with this photo

Being a popular choice in wales in the summer of 1990!!

As a person born in england of welsh descent but having lived in wales for 30 years I find the whole thing pointless! IMO the Welsh blaming the saes for all that goes wrong in Wales is the biggest issue holding wales back. Stop hating the english and start sorting your own probs out and you might get somewhere!.

And as for the whole 1966 thing, you never hear a welshman referring to the welsh rugby teams of the &0's do you??

but I think people have the right to be offended

Was that a serious statement? Are you honestly saying that people actually are entitled to be offended, and that there are places in the world where people's "offended rights" are being suppressed?

And what does "being offended" entail? Is it a physical pain? Does it cause illness? How do you get this "offended" condition? What are the symptons and is there any cure (other than the obvious "grow up and get over it" one of course).

I'm curious to know.

Oh FFS - have I taught you lot nothing?

The t shirt design cannot be racist as it does not involve negative stereotyping on grounds of race religion or ethnic grouping. Nor is it prejudiced in any way.

Mildly xenophobic and thats about it.

anyway last world cup is what not anyone but England - its was support Trinidad and tobago as their star player was Jason Scotland

Sadly there won't be any AB.... (Wales, Scotland, NI, IoM, Channel Islands etc.)

They could do a kit. Print "anyone but" and supply stickers (32 stickers?) to offend the nation of your choice.

Actually given we didn't qualify "anyone but Scotland" would be mildly amusing. A little too knowing perhaps, but at least in some small way we could feel we were taking part.

By the way how many recent winners do you think we'll get in our qualifying group next time?
