You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Driving into work this morning my old Vauxhall Astra 1.4 Ecotech (petrol estate) - would judder badly as i tried to accelerate and engine light came on, there seems to be a drop in power although the engine didn't cut out, although it did come close in stop/ start traffic.
Quick Google search seems to suggest these cars are prone to issues with Coil Pack issues and that potentially not firing on all cylinders?
Any suggestions?
Easy to change coil pack yourself?
Had what sounds like the same issue on my X reg astra recently. As you say, the culprit was the coil pack. Dead easy and pretty cheap to replace.
Theres a trick to get the error code without a reader, cant remember the code number mine gave but it was miss-firing and then completely dropping one cylinder.
Thanks Andy, know where you found info on the code trick?

Heres the error codes to look for:
P0301 Cylinder #1 Misfire
P0302 Cylinder #2 Misfire
P0303 Cylinder #3 Misfire
P0304 Cylinder #4 Misfire
P0305 Cylinder #5 Misfire
P0306 Cylinder #6 Misfire
P0307 Cylinder #7 Misfire
P0308 Cylinder #8 Misfire
P0309 Cylinder #9 Misfire
P0310 Cylinder #10 Misfire
P0311 Cylinder 11 Misfire Detected
P0312 Cylinder 12 Misfire Detected
P0313 Misfire Detected with Low Fuel
P0314 Single Cylinder Misfire (Cylinder not Specified)
P0315 Crank Pos Sys Variation Not Learned
P0316 Engine Misfire Detected on Startup (First 1000 Revs)
Read the fault codes, if it shows a cylinder missfire then swap the coils around to see if the missfire follows the coil. If it doesn't then its likely a mechanical problem.
12 cylinder Astra? Might have to look again at Vauxhall, they've snuck something interesting in their range at last...
I wish it had 12 cylinders, then it'd run ok on the other 11!
If using Andy's method, from experience, video the sequence, far easier than repeatedly doing the test, especially if it has multiple codes.
On Corsas we've had we used 'pedal test' to get codes.
