I have an Audi A6 2.0 TDI CR and I need to add some coolant. In the engine bay it says G12 on top of the coolant bottle, I went into Halfords and they said that was an older type and they recommended Comma G40?
Should I be sticking to G12, Or will anything do?
G12 is really old spec. What year is your A6? Sure it didn't say G12+ or G12++?
G40 is equivalent to G12++ (i think). They should all be mixable, but personally I'd only top up with the same as is in there. Is there an Audi dealer nearby?
Hi Tallpaul, Just checked the engine compartment and it says G12. My Audi is a 2009 Avant model. Noticed there is some GSF and Europarts stores near by, I may just get a small top up bottle.
Ten year old car with coolant leak.
How old is the coolant?
If more than 5 years, then......
Coolant leak could be blown head gasket.
Coolant leak could be blown head gasket.
could be absolutely anything.
No coolant leak I am aware of. Just done 300 miles to Devon and it ran perfect. No problem, what so ever. It’s had the VAG manifold replacement. I presumed someone hasn’t topped up the coolant fully. Level is sat near the minimum mark, doesn’t move at all.
Assuming that VAG coolant has been used then I'm pretty sure that either VAG G12++ or 13 will mix with any G11, G12 and G13 variant. I'd check with VAG first, and I wouldn't use anything else
Thanks timba Will check with VAG first.

Go to the Audi dealer only way to be sure. I got coolant for daughters clio from dealer it was a fiver cheaper than the halfords generic stuff.
If the level is constant then it might be cheaper to have the concentration checked against the anticipated minimum temperature and top up with distilled water if within spec.
That'll preserve the long-life of whichever coolant is in there because a mix of types may reduce coolant life (see bigyan's chart notes)
