Current supplier, Green network energy, have gone bust. Am being transferred to EDF automatically, joy.

Which supplier would be best? Looking at both gas and electric. During the week just myself with children over at the weekend.

Thanks

Wtf!

I'm with them, they just emailed me for my monthly meter reading??!!

No email saying they went bust?

(If in transferred I'll just be going on a price comparison due to be honest.)

Octopus here, seem good so far. First house and less than a year so not a strong endorsement but seem well thought of.

£50 credit if referred (to you and the other) is a nice start and obviously allows you to offset bills moving forwards. Happy to send the link if needed (pm me) but also watching the thread as no doubt other good companies, we will be comparing rates again once we have a better idea of usage.

Linky

Only just found out when my mum phoned. Someone had mentioned it to her on Facebook.

No emails or messages from them. Poor effort

Edit - over £250 in credit, do I lose it?

Money saving expert / Martin Lewis are advising not to jump ship just yet - wait for new supplier to transfer over, then move again.

We were with them too.

The money saving expert email said it is a suprise - there's normally warning within the industry apparently.

I think that's what I'll do, wait till I'm moved to edf and then go searching.

Don't try and switch until you've been properly adopted by EDF or you'll end up in a big mess as the switch process wont work properly now that Green Energy Network aren't operating.

EDF have taken you over as a Supplier Of Last Resort. You should be able to find details of the process on the ofgem site.

I think you're credit will be transferred over, I've only just started working in this industry though so no 100%

I’m with them too and to be truthful it’s not a surprise.
2018/2019 circa £103/month
2019/2020 circa £125/month EDF
2020/2021 £85/month Green Energy Network and we’re currently £60 in credit having submitted readings a fortnight ago.
A whole year stuck at home and we’re paying less than ever for gas and electric!

Just looking at octopus, seems like a favourite. Will wait until formally taken over as recommended.

Much appreciated.

Wait for the first bill from EDF and the switch to who ever you choose. I seems I am part of theSTW in crowd and have move from EDF to Octopus

We moved over to Bulb a year ago.
Seems pretty similar to Octopus, including the £50 referral fee, etc.

Bulb is even simpler than Octopus, in that they only have one tariff.
The price follows the wholesale price, and it's gone down (and then up once) a few times over the last months.
Bills have worked out about 25% cheaper over the year compared to our previous supplier (British Gas).

No complaints so far, but then not had any problems that need dealing with.

We're with London Power, which is supplied/administered by Octopus. No complaints.

Octopus customer service is excellent but they've not been particularly cheap the last few years*. British Gas's online only offering Evolve is pretty painless and cheap, might be a loss leader to tempt customers.

E.ON were awful, which was disappointing as I used to work for them and am still a small shareholder.

*prices can vary across regions, YMMV.

we went from bulb to pure planet, only on the recommendation of moneysavingexpert at the time, that doesnt mean its till the best option now tho, theyre all much of a muchness.

pretty sure its touted as 100% renewable which appealed.

i think they have a referral code for us both to get a bit of cashback if you were interested, just drop me a pm.

MSE energy club emailed me a few days ago to say they'd gone belly up. Nothing at all from GEN, except randomly an email from them *yesterday* inviting me to renew my deal with them which expires in a few weeks (or at least it did). Yesterday was the day EDF took on all customers....

As noted just about everywhere, hang on until you have completed the transfer to EDF including credit balance if applicable then get on MSE or similar and find an alternative.

Happy with Ecotricity here. 'bout as green as it gets, they put their money back in to building wind farms and according to the latest newsletter, even geothermal.

Just move to the cheapest each year - they're all as shit as each other.

Ofgen guarantee your balance, so you won't lose any credit.

As a few others have said I just shop around using MSE energy club and maybe the CAB comparison tool. Also browse the MSE forum / Household & Travel / energy to check on the supplier I'm considering, you can usually get an idea from any recent threads on them

I'm with Octopus for Electricity (but for a very specific reason) and Zog Energy for gas.

No.
I had similar when Tonik went tits up, but the credit was transferred to the new supplier.

Just wait a month or so for everything to transfer over before you look at switching to a different provider.
As most others have said, just go with the cheapest and try and get a cashback or recommendation bonus.

OT, but this isn't really true. They may trade only in the renewables market, but at the moment 55% of your power is being generated by Gas and 7.4% wind. Unless someone invented a way of sifting wind only electric into you meter, everyone is getting the same mix through their 'lectric pipe.

As others have said wait until you're officially moved to EDF.
I was with Tonik when they went bust and got moved to Scottish Power. It took a couple of months for me to get an account number and as soon as I had that I moved to Avro energy, who were cheapest at the time.

I've just renewed with Octopus. Initial deal was really good. Under 13p per KWh for leccy. Has gone up a bit. Maybe £50-£100 more than lowest on comparison site for dual fuel.

But as their website is very good and user friendly I'm fixing for another year. No exit penalty on the fixed rateso if prices happened to drop or a really good deal comes up elsewhere I can go.

Well said, and right now wind source is down to 5.6% we are buying in more than that from France at the moment 7%.
Its great when we get the really consistent wind where around 30% is generated & solar around 10% but to claim 100% renewable is a bit of a con

New GNE customer here - switched about 2 weeks ago when our British Gas deal ended, no wonder it was cheap!

Also no contact from GNE, or anyone else for that matter, so thanks to STW for the info. Have emailed EDF to see if they will honour existing GNE tariffs but I'm not hopeful so will also look to switch once bills have moved over.

Any thoughts on Good Energy? I was with them a few years ago when I was working away from home - renting was much nicer (and cheaper) than hotels.

I am currently switching to Utility Point as they get great reviews. However I have just spent 40 minutes on hold trying (unsuccessfully) to speak to someone regarding my meter reading 💩

I was with Utility Point for dual fuel in 2019, was happy with them (everything done online, billed regularly, straightforward sign up and exit). I didn't have to phone them over the 12 months tho. I would have probably happily stayed with them, but for the fact that I had to shift my leccy to Octopus.

@freddyg i was with Good for a few years. Excellent service, albeit not the quickest. They just went cheap compared to octopus who came knocking when we moved house.

A mate has just signed with Coop Community Energy which is administered / backed by Octopus but money goes to community energy projects (surprisingly).

I've just had my welcome email from EDF. They claim that they will guarantee a price decrease until 30 September 2021 vs the current tariff I was on with GNE.

Will be interesting to see as that was a very cheap deal.

Assume they've done that to prevent extra headache of 350,000 people trying to simultaneously leave EDF whilst EDF are trying to get them set up.

Also assume the tariff will change when my GNE tariff was due to change...
