While the kid in me thinks this is probably as awesome as it gets...The adult in me wonders if these sorts of very fast, complex airplanes should be in private hands.

That’s also true of any modern executive jet. Anyone with the means to buy any of those Lightnings, or the Buccs, would need to have to fly them from SA, or other country anyway, the CAA forbids fast jets to be flown by private individuals. Hunters, Meteors, Provosts, etc can be, but they’re not transonic. There’s a privately owned and flown Hunter at Cotswold Airport, when my brother got married, he and his wife had a second ceremony carried out at their bike club on the airfield, and as they rode alongside the runway the plane did a low, fast flypast for them.

Am I the only one wondering what shoes you'd need for flying in your Lightning?

So if you did buy one of these you would never be able to fly it yourself, only hire a military pilot to fly it for you?

shown this to my dad (ex Lightning driver) his response was (and I'm paraphrasing here) there were some of these kites I wouldn't get when they were new in the RAF, there would be no-chance of me going anywhere near one now that they're as old and knackered as I am!

That’s also true of any modern executive jet.

with respect, it's nothing like an modern executive jet. These planes were built with a shelf life in mind, they were expected to be destroyed in a short (but exciting, and sunny) war with the Soviets. Certainly they were not designed to be owned and operated by civilians waaaay beyond their lifespans.

There’s a privately owned and flown Hunter at Cotswold Airport,

remind me, what was the airplane involved in one of the worse crashes at an airshow recently...

Haynes & Cann Type 65, Perchy.

Still have a pair somewhere. Astonishingly comfortable boots.

I'd wear spats in the Tiger Moth.

Alternatively the aircraft can be returned to fully operational status

From the link to the Strike master advert 😲

Hmmm, a range of 1600 miles would easily get me from Newcastle to Corfu.

All I need now, is a pilots license and a big lotto win

Mig-3 is nice. Half a chance of being workable for the average squillionaire playboy, too, providing the Allison is fitted.

I quite like the look of that vampire, always like the de Haviland twin boomed planes. Doubt I'd fit in it though 🙁

At least with the Lightning Flashy wouldn't need to demonstrate his superior knowledge of the best seat to pick. It'll be A1, A1 or A1.

When I was involved in air cadets one of my fellow squadron staff was a former Harrier pilot and test pilot. He had flown dozens of aircraft types, both RAF and international and ejected twice. He said the only time he was ever scared was when he flew Lightnings

Like a lot of these things - big boats, fast cars etc I suspect the buying of it is less than half the battle!

If it flies, floats or, erm something else I forget, rent it.

Seems only appropriate to remind people of Taffy Holden’s exploits.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden%27s_Lightning_flight

Flying a Lightning is one thing, but flying one by accident now that’s something else 😳

Didn't Thunder City crash one of their Lightning's? Fairly sure the place got closed down due to various bad practices... Possibly means the planes aren't in top notch working order.

Anyway, I'm going to win the EuroMillions tonight so I'll take your orders tomorrow.

The other version is "wings , wheels or tits." Not quite as alliterative but still valid.

Aside from the slight impracticality of them being in Australia, they do look quite good plus they're one of the easier ones on that list to fly.
