To cut a long story short I had to leave my employment/employer at the end of April.

I had found out that the 2 MD’s were handling stolen IT equipment and that they were also using and selling class A drugs, quite often at the place of work.

I have done all that I needed to do to keep my name out of it all and prevent any comeback from it all. I had planned ahead and saved as much salary as I could in the time that I had left.  Lucky for me my partner has a good job/salary.

Because of all of the emotional stress that it has caused I have taken time out to try and make sense of it all, its really knocked my confidence about.

Moving ahead I am now thinking about future employment; how do you explain the time gap in employment?

Also, they will ask for references and I simply can’t ask the employers because as human beings they are vile in every way you can think of, do I just be open and truthful about it all? I could if desperate us one of the managers, but I’m not sure??

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

How long is the gap? What have you done in it? My CV has a career break in it, many do now, I went travelling, others may have pursued a hobby in bell-ringing, it doesn't really matter, just say what you did.

As for references, all that is given is a "yes, they worked here", and the prospective employer can't approach the previous one unless you say so. I'd just discuss it with them once you get to that point.

As above.

Don't worry about the break - you could at interview explain why you had the break/did something else for a bit - did the MD's get arrested, or did you jump ship ?

A friend of mine was a "web developer" at a hydroponics place for a while, soon moved on, given the 'customers' that visited with wads of cash - the 'internet' sales weren't great for obvious reasons.

As others have said, the gap can be explained by "I went travelling...", "I worked on my own startup..." "I thought it would be a good idea to join the Foreign Legion...."

etc etc

Just make sure you don't mention anywhere that needs a stamp in your passport, or get a new one.

My last employer needed proof of what I was doing in a gap from the last 5 years, I had to get a letter from the Job centre.  I think they are checking that you have not been locked up in prison
