I'm a salesman for a company and have been for two years. Like a lot of people my holiday entitlement is 20 days plus stats and it increases one day for every year up to 30 days max. So after 2 years I'm on 21 days plus stats.
I work with two chaps in a Northern team, one has 30 days cos he's been there since leaving school and another has 23 days, but when they're off they divert their phones to me and I deal with the stuff on their patch.
Work emailed a company wide notice advertising a position in Customer Service Admin (even though we've just announced 30 redundancies) and amongst the benefits was 25 days holiday plus long service.
This really pissed me off, I'm not thinking the role is any less important than mine etc but as an example, last year I had no holiday as I had to use my holidays to look after sick family member and child care, i can never get half terms off as one of the member often takes them (even though he has no children) and I can't be off same time as him. He's swooped in and booked off between the bank holidays/royal wedding to get best part of two weeks off for three days holiday entitlement, which I now is perfectly allowed, I should've been on the ball....
The question is can I approach my line manager/HR and make a complaint about a position which could well go to an outsider offering more holidays than mine??
I'm sure they'll say it's a benefit allied to that position.....
Would you also complain that other people are paid more than you? They're benefits. Yours are legal and if they choose to offer more to someone else then that's up to them. Of course, you could negociate your holiday up but by the sounds of it, they may want to limit yours because of the problems of coverage if you have more holiday to take.
Different job, different salary, different Ts & Cs.
They can do what they like with new starts.
Has anyone suggested joining a union yet?

No and plenty are....

That shouldn't be the issue, i have two other colleagues to take up the slack like I do when they're off.

I work for a privately owned manufacturing company who tend to be the sort of organisations who don't let the unions in and going off what friends who are in unions say I wouldn't want to be in one.
So basically you're a sucker... you need to negociate a better deal or refuse to be pushed around by the other colleagues...

Well, you decided you wanted to work in the profit-driven private sector and you decided you didn't want anything to do with collective negotiation and you decided to work as a salesman so...negotiate yourself a better deal.
Sorry if this sounds a little unsympathetic.
Its not uncommon from what I can gather for sales staff to have a seperatley negotiated package. Sales people at our place have a very similar holiday entitlement, all office staff get 25 days too. Sales staff have uncapped commision, office staff don't
I don't see your problem really.
I should've been on the ball....
When I use to look after a team, I'd get emails @ 00:01 on January 1st every year from a couple of guys booking holidays - that's the earliest they can make a request
so you may need to be sat on the ball or miss out again 😀
You have no valid complaint.
I suppose you can time your email to send it later - rather than actually be sitting like a sad git at the bells!00:01 on January 1st every year from a couple of guys booking holidays - that's the earliest they can make a request
If you want to do something constructive about the issue you have with other people booking the leave first then why not discuss that with your employer? First-come-first-served may not be the best / fairest system. Booking 12 months ahead may not be ideal for juggling round varying workloads.
Bit OT, but did you know that if you are now off sick for a while that you still accrue your leave entitlement.
Just gone back after a few months off and I got to carry over 20 days to add to my 32.5 days for this year (genuine illness and I have worked there for 35 years)
All to do with an EU ruling, expected to lose most of mine on a pro rata basis, but pleasantly surprised by this new turn of events.
Its good for up to two years with a maximum of 24 days per year, good old EU and bet the employers aren't too chuffed with it.
Maybe I was just lucky, but that was always the case at my previous employer, whom I was with for 33 years.Tijuana Taxi - Member

Wasn't for us, remember seeing the chart which showed leave lost against absent days
Also used to get a week off for getting married even if it was more than once. The allowance is now measured against your leave allowance, as in I would probably only get about a day or at the most two.
Lucky as well to have retained the 2.5 privilege days all public sector workers got when the company was privatised and changed the leave rules, most people now get it incorporated in their max of 30 days
