So I have been moved from 1 location to another to get exposure and to high light my qualities for a promotion, however its not in the bag yet.
Last week I was taken off long term pain killers due to a duff shoulder, and told I had to have surgery (again) I was expecting 10 maybe 12 weeks before this but my letter of confirmation arrived today and its in 2 weeks. I will need 12 weeks off work and another 6 to 12 on light duties.
What are the chances of this Ruining the Ideas of a promotion, Bearing in mind I have re scheduled surgery twice in the past for the employer.
It's surgery so not casual sickness offer to do some form of light duties ASAP to show you're willing.

If you don't take the time to heal properly and your shoulder still hurts and is a problem 20 years later will you regret your decision not to rest properly?
Do you think in 20 years time the company will remember you working those extra weeks?
There are always other opportunities
Look after yourself!

Just have to hope the company is reasonable
If you are a good talent and worked for me/in my team I would tell you to go get fit. Although it would be a pain in the butt, big promotions are earned on more than a short term issue and are an investment in the long term of the person and the business.
A rubbish employer's opinion may vary
It will tell you if your employer is worth working for. Be up front.
